The only time there will be peace in the region is when the people, the mass majority, set aside their hatred of each other and decide to accept each other's culture. Until then any UN/US resolution/cease-fire/agreement does nothing.

Who cares. I could care less if we were talking about Munchkinland. The fundamental question is does a state have the right to defend itself. If Al Queda were launching a few thousand rockets from Toronto into Chicago I'd be among the first to want to take Toronto off the map. I'd want to warn the innocents first like Israel did but after that, Chicago is more important to me. How many innocents did we kill in Hiroshima or Nagasaki? Does this make it regrettable yes, wrong, no. The fact is Israel is our main ally in the Middle East. Hopefully that will change over time and we will have even more good allies. This will be exponentially harder as long as you have state sponsorship of terrorism from countries like Iran and Syria that provide funding and safe havens. Unfortunately, I think some people on this thread are letting their racial/religious bias' delude them into thinking this problem would go away were Israel wiped off the map.
