You'll be shocked at what John Kerry said about our troops in Iraq while at a campaign stop. At the same time you won't be shocked because it's so condescending, so offensive that no one else but John Kerry could have said it. Except Murtha. And Sheehan. And Maher. Ok, it's so condescending and so offensive that there are several leftists who could have said it.
"You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
Hot Air has the audio.
Michelle Malkin has a lot of seething reaction.
Update: Watch the video of Kerry making his despicable comments:
Hat tip: YACRWB
Update II: Hugh Hewitt has a few words about the dishonorable Senator Kerry:
The Kerry sneer is part and parcel of the Pelosi Democrats, just as the attempt to suppress the votes of military serving overseas in the Florida recount is part of the Democratic Party legacy.
There is a reason why an overwhelming majority of the military supports the president and votes GOP. They know the contempt most of the left feels for them and their mission, and they won't be fooled by appearances at Veteran's Day parades.Any vote for any Democrat is not only a vote against victory and a vote for vulnerability. It is also a vote against the military. "End up in Iraq" if you don't study hard and do your homework? Simply disgusting. What a miserable man.
Indeed.
Captain Ed recommends donating to Soldiers' Angels.
Do you want to support the troops? Then make your contribution to Soldier's Angels. They have a new effort called Project Valour that will be raising money from various bloggers. I have not had an opportunity to sign up for a particular team, but given the theme of this blog, I'll root for the Navy. Whichever team you choose, you will be helping our men and women who put their lives on the line for all of us ... even those who belittle and disrespect them.
I'm with Captain Ed in supporting Soldiers' Angels and, in honor of my grandfather, a former WWII Army major who is now interred at Arlington National Cemetery, and my uncle, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who served in Vietnam and the first Gulf War, I have placed the link to donate to the Soldiers' Angels Project Valour IT for the US Army:
Update III: Watch KNBC4's video report with Kerry's comments in context.
Update IV: Be sure to stop by Lorie's post from yesterday, which has more information about Soldiers' Angels Project Valour IT. She's supporting the Marines in honor of her husband who is a Marine Corps vet.

Without the rest of the speech in context I'm wondering if this was really a swipe at Bush for "being stupid and stuck in Iraq"? In other words, was he taking a swipe at Bush, missed and hit the soldiers instead? We already know that IQ wise Kerry isn't one of the brightest and doesn't think on his feet too well. Don't forget that at the height of being accused of being a flip-flopper he handed the Repubs a classic sound bite of "...voted for before voting against..." line.
Either way he is an ass and stupid for saying it I'm just wondering to what depth his stupidity in this remark goes?

Typical con post. Take something out of context to beat the messenger with while ignoring the real issue. The fact is we need the poor to fight our wars and Bush and his cronies are doing a great job of producing and recruiting them.
I say again sign John Conyers bill to bring back the draft.....NO EXCEPTIONS. John Kerry's a good intelligent honest man....he's certainly no Con.
"....newly released Pentagon demographic data show that the military is leaning heavily for recruits on economically depressed, rural areas where youths' need for jobs may outweigh the risks of going to war"
"Many of today's recruits are financially strapped, with nearly half coming from lower-middle-class to poor households, according to new Pentagon data based on Zip codes and census estimates of mean household income. "
"Nearly two-thirds, 64 percent, of recruits to the military were from counties that have average incomes lower than the national median National Priorities Project said. The group looked at Department of Defense data for 2004."
"If you are poor in America and you are young, you may be able to join the military. We couldn't have a voluntary military without high levels of poverty. And without a voluntary military, we couldn't have perpetual wars because then the politicians and their financial supporters would have to send their own sons and daughters to fight. They wouldn't be any more likely to do this than they would be to volunteer to go themselves to fight. They far prefer to send your sons and daughters to kill and die in foreign lands. In actuality, only one member of Congress had a child fighting in Iraq."

Muirgeo makes an interesting fact based argument, and backs his statements up with sources.
Rather than respond to his ideas and his argument with an honest discussion, I'm seeing what looks more like chattering monkeys in the trees flinging verbal poo.
Let's consider... Kerry is a decorated war veteran, recognized for bravery and injuries on the battle field.
Now, the current administration... Bush didn't want to do the vietnam tour, so got strings pulled to get a cush assignment protecting Texas skies from the vietnamese. He wanted to be a pilot like his father, but unlike his father who was a real life hero, he was a bit of a wash out. His final status on discharge was with flight status revoked. From what we can tell, he never really made an honest effort to even finish his military service.
Then there is Cheney. This guy applied for and received five (5) deferrals from military service. Apparently, he had things that were more important to do that getting his ass shot up in the mud in Southeast Asia.
And Karl Rove... Well he managed to dodge the draft by going to school part time in Utah for a while, then dropping out, then going to Maryland and getting deferred, then dropping his classes there.
Well, then Tom Delay... Remember, he was the guy that claimed he tried to enlist, but was told that the "minorities" had already filled most of the available positions. You remember when that came up? Back when we learned George Walker Bush's vice president Dan Quale had also weasled out of vietnam.
Denny Hastert? Nope, nothing there. No service on his resume.
Other than Donald Rumsfeld, who has legitimate military service, the Republican leadership is filled with draft dodgers, draft weasles, and chickenhawks.
So when we talk about Kerry being "elitest", we should also recognize that he actualy had mud on his boots.
Not everybody can say that.
Some had fathers that made calls to congressmen.
Or pretended to go to school.
Or lied in any number of ways.
And some people served....
John
