The Anchroress links to this Salon story reporting that John Edwards' campaign has fired the two bloggers recently hired to work for his presidential campaign.. The Salon report says the bloggers were fired, but also includes this quote from Jennifer Palmieri saying she would "caution [Salon] against reporting that they have been fired. We will have something to say later." I will update as new information is available.
For background on the controversy see this NY Times article and my post from earlier this week.
Michelle Malkin has a good roundup of commentary.
Update: The NYT story linked above deals largely with the anti-Catholic sentiment in some of Marcotte's blogging. Kathryn Jean Lopez had much more at The Corner.
If you have not already watched Michelle Malkin's performance of some of Marcotte's work, check it out now.
Update II: Pam Spaulding blogging at Pandagon says that the Edwards bloggers were "swiftboated" and smeared and that the Edwards campaign should not have caved in to the rightwingers. If "swiftboating" means getting the truth out to the public, then Marcotte was swiftboated, but liberals using that term generally use it to describe a coordinated smear campaign. If Marcotte's blog post had been fabricated by political opponents (ala Mary Mapes' magic memos) or misinterpreted, that would be one thing. Many of those blog posts speak for themselves though. Just take a look at the one Michelle Malkin read from in the link above and it is apparent that Edwards could not have the person who wrote those words out representing his campaign in any public way. He made a big mistake by not vetting before hiring and at this point he had little choice but to "cave." (On a personal note, I met Pam Spaulding in DC on election night and though I don't agree with her on many subjects, she was very nice to me. We were on the same flight back to Raleigh and when I got on the wrong parking shuttle, not realizing there were now two separate lines, she not only didn't laugh at me, but she didn't make fun of me in her blog for it either. Navigation is not my strong suit.)
Regarding Pam's post, it will be interesting to see if there is any fallout in the left blogosphere over the firing.
Update III: Iowahawk has uncovered the Pandagon Papers.

Thanks for the link..I hope it is true. After all the article also says
"Malkin, it should be noted, is hardly innocent of being involved with what ABC News' Terry Moran termed "hate speech" when applied to Marcotte. Malkin has long maintained ties to VDARE, a Web site tagged as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center that has published works by people like Jared Taylor, one of America's leading white supremacists, and Sam Francis, who was fired by the conservative Washington Times for his own white supremacist remarks, given at a conference held by Taylor's organization. The liberal press watchdog Media Matters has also noted Donohue's long list of controversial statements."
There is no room for HATE on any side.

In a calm manner, consider the post Malkin made the video about. One of the aspects of the blogmeister for a campaign is that you need to be able to quickly spin news stories when events happen. You aren't waiting for the next news cycle, you are doing it now.
Does Edwards really want those around him, speaking for him, to make the mental leaps from Rhenquist is dead to choice is gone to get steralized now while you still can to a heroic struggle of free women who will never let sleep those who perpatrated this evil to victory for the heroic women struggle such that the evil doers should just give up now because they can never catch them. All in 5 paragraphs. That is more than a lose cannon rolling on the Edwards campaign deck. That is a soviet artillery corps on the Titanic.
It's not the profanity or what she says, but the absolute lack of perspective that makes them dangerous to the Edwards campaign.
On second thought, don't fire them John. We can use the laughs.

I'd be careful of who you support in this fiasco. The man leading the charge to get Marcotte and McEwan fired is William Donohue, president of the Catholic League and prone to saying some, errr, off-color things himself. For example:
"Hollywood is controlled by secular jews who hate Christanity in general and Catholicism in particular ... Hollywood likes anal sex..."
Here's another tasty quote:
"There are people in Hollywood, not all of them but some people who are nothing more than harlots. They will do anything for a buck, they wouldn't care. If you asked them to sodomize their own mother in a movie they would do so, and they would do it with a smile on their face."
So the man who calls Edwards' bloggers "bigots" thinks that Hollywood is full of of jews who would f--- their own mother's up the ass. Is this who you want to place your support behind?

It's fascinating what people you can tie Malkin to. But, since Malkin wasn't hired by a Presidential campaign, it is QUITE irrelevant to this story. You don't see Lorie et al talking about other bloggers here. Just the two that John Edwards hired --- and, should he win the nomination, he'll remind us of how much he wants to unite the country, even though the bloggers he hired HATE so many people.
I'd be careful of who you support in this fiasco. The man leading the charge to get Marcotte and McEwan fired is William Donohue, president of the Catholic League and prone to saying some, errr, off-color things himself.
So it's NOT hate speech because William Donohue criticized it? Is that the point here?

I was quite unaware that a Republican hired Donohue to work on his campaign. Can you link to the story?
If not, can you explain why it's relevant to this story?
Would someone please let Old Coot know if any other random unimportant lefties get fired from their jobs?
Judging by the rantings of people on Terry Moran's blog and on Crooks and Liars, they were quite well known. And official campaign blogger is now unimportant, eh? I suppose if Rudy hired Charles Johnson (who, mind you, has never actually posted a hateful comment, in spite of the reputation), you'd be cool with it.
The left has proven one of the maxims of conservatives: Racism is when somebody criticizes a liberal. Hate speech is whatever a liberal says it is.

I didn't think that what Edward's bloggers had to say was hate speech to begin with. I always thought of hate speech as, say, coming from the KKK when they suggest that we should hang all the niggers or some such crap, which is a far cry from any of the rhetoric mentined at Pandagon or Shakespeare's Sister.

Relevance: When Donohue calls a couple of leftwing bloggers "bigots" but also thinks that Hollywood is full of "jews" who so value money (because, as we all know, jews control the world and look for pennies in corners!) that they would "sodomize their own mother in a movie," then the contradictions make my head explode.
More to the point, why does Donohue deserve to be listened to?

So it boils down to "If we do it, it's OK". I've Malkin strung up around here for MUCH less. Ditto Coulter. Ditto Rush. Ditto Glenn Beck (who is M & M's newest cause celebre as an unrepentant bigot or some such nonsense).
Is "Hate speech" idiotic to stress about? Yup. But if you're going to do it --- and the left has for years now --- you HAVE to be consistent.
We already watched the left cease caring about sexual harrassment the moment Clinton went into office (and whatever happened to the "everyone does" it defense for infidelity since, by every ounce of info we have, Bush has NOT had an affair?) after lynching Clarence Thomas for REALLY weak accusations with even less evidence behind them.
You don't want to lie in a wet bed? Don't pee in it.
The left wet their own bed.

Again, Donohue being a jerk somehow makes the bloggers innocent?
Jimmy Carter wrote that suicide bombings shouldn't stop until Israel pulls away out of the disputed territories. He also stated that he doesn't view Palestinian terrorism as terrorism.
Can I now claim that Mel Gibson isn't anti-Semitic because Carter is?
More to the point, why does Donohue deserve to be listened to?
You seem to miss that lots of people besides Donohue had a problem with this. You don't see me saying we shouldn't vote for Democrats because Cindy Sheehan is one, do you?
