With my background in psychology, I'm a little wary of anyone who wants to take too much credit for something. Probably Mohammed is taking too much credit to appear as a major figure amomg Islamic radicals and Al Qaeda, although Osama Bin Laden really deserves more responsibility for a major role in 9/11, etc.

Bin Laden was good enough of a military planner that he received Reagan Administration support, CIA payments as well as support from both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as he established Mujahadeen camps in Afghanistan during the war with the Soviets. That's something that really came back to bite the U.S. Both Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden who were seen as major allies for the Reagan Administration's support both turned into "Frankenstein's monsters"

Mr. Hooson is incorrect. Osama bin Laden did not receive aid from Reagan or the US at all. It wasn't offered, but he would have refused it if it had been anyway.

The US aided mujaheddin forces, but not those allied with bin Laden or the Taliban. We financed the warlords of the groups which later came to be known as the "Northern Alliance," Pakistani intelligence financed the Taliban, and bin Laden was mainly self-financed.

The only military "support" we gave Saddam was sharing satellite photos of Iranian deployments during the later stages of the Iran-Iraq War, when the Iranians had turned the tide and threatened to overrun Iraqi positions along the border. Up until that point, we had remained strictly neutral in that war between two enemies of the United States. It was the possibility of a decisive victory for Iran that led to this help for Iraq.

Had Iraq turned the tide and threatened to march to Teheran, we probably would have offered similar intel to the Iranians to prevent that, too.

Larkin you seem to forget KSM was one of 14 that were held in other foreign prisons, not Gitmo.

In a stroke of brilliance Bush moved him and the 13 others to Gitmo to counter the loonbats and sympathizers catter-walling about shutting down Gitmo.

There is a lot of misinformation or historically wrong facts in regards to the 1980's policy of Reagan Administration support for both Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden by some here.

As a counter to the large Iranian army which had the ability to defeat the far smaller Iraqi army of Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War, massive amounts of Agriculture Department CCC funds intended for international disaster relief were illegally used by the Reagan Administration to allow Saddam Hussein to purchase billions of dollars in French, Brazilian and some U.S. arms, but not Soviet arms, as these were restricted in this covert foreign policy arrangement to help counter Iran which could have overthrown the Sunni Saddam Hussein and set up a Shiite puppet government of Iran in Iraq, but I guess our current policy in Iraq pretty much achieved this goal for Iran. In addition, the Soviets declared an arms embargo to the area, hoping to dry up the supply of Russian and other arms, and to force both Iran and Iraq into peace talks. It was the Reagan Administration who prolonged this war by years by illegally funneling arms into the area. Roughly $40 billion U.S. dollars helped to build up the 1980's Saddam Hussein war machine.

Osama Bin Laden was recruited by the Reagan Administration through arrangements with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan to build terrorist camps to battle the soviet invasion of Afghanistan, although Bin Laden and his brother who helped to build a network of Mujahadeen and terrorist camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan were surprised to find out that the CIA or other covert U.S. programs associated with the Reagan Administration were the source of much of their funds, arms and other assets for this terrorist network. After the defeat of the Soviets, many veterans of the Afghanistan war including Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri and Osama Bin Laden began to turn their terrorist efforts away from the Soviets and towards the Americans who helped to build their terrorist network in Afghanistan and Pakistan. AntiSoviet forces such ad Osama Bin Laden and others received billions of dollars in covert U.S. support for arms and other supplies.

Some historic revisionists may want to deny billions of dollars in U.S. aid given to building up the military or terrorist networks of both Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden during the 1980's with a huge covert and largely illegal Reagan foreign policy. Only in Nicaragua did a covert and illegal Reagan foreign policy prove some positive results by helping to bring down the awful government of radical Daniel Ortega.
