Since I wrote my most recent Townhall column (I turned it in Wednesday night), I was pleased to see that GMA's Kate Snow did something I criticized those in the media for not doing. On yesterday's Good Morning America, Snow raised the issue of Al Sharpton's role in the Tawana Brawley case.
On Thursday's "Good Morning America," reporter Kate Snow hosted a segment on whether the Duke lacrosse players will be able to get their reputations back. In so doing, she discussed Reverend Al Sharpton's role in falsely accusing New York prosecutor Steven Pagones of raping then 15-year-old Tawana Brawley in 1987.Newsbusters also reports that Sharpton's history was raised on The View yesterday. I agree with Scott Whitlock that "this is encouraging and NBC and CBS should follow-up and also interview the falsely accused Pagones." Here is the link to the Newsbusters post on The View segment featuring a transcript of guest co-host Rose McGowan's comments on Al Sharpton.Though this segment was not specifically related to the unfolding Don Imus story, GMA has thus far been the only network morning show to interview Pagones and, by implication, seriously question Sharpton's role as moral arbiter in the Imus case. (In fairness, "Today" has mentioned the Tawana Brawley case in general as has MSNBC.) After discussing the Duke case, Snow segued into other high profile, false accusations
On April 12, for the third straight day "The View" co-hosts discussed the Imus controversy. Most noteworthy, though, they also discussed the lack of moral authority from Imus' most visible critic, Reverend Al Sharpton. Guest co-host Rose McGowan read verbatim Sharpton's most inflammatory, anti-semitic remarks including the Tawana Brawley hoax and labelling Jews "diamond merchants." Co-host Joy Behar editorialized on the key remarks. Co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck called Sharpton's comments "hatred" and McGowan called them "complete bigotry." Rosie O'Donnell was unusually quiet.I am thrilled to see some on the networks finally alerting viewers to Sharpton's history of exploiting race.
Update: In this parody at The Kilroy Report, Al Sharpton takes over the Imus In the Morning show. It is a parody, but the idea of Sharpton's show replacing the Imus show is certainly not outside the realm of possibility. Stranger things have happened.

More great low moments from the Al Sharpton "Hall Of Shame":
December 2005, Sharpton has to repay $100,000 in federal campaign funds to the federal government for overspending from his 2004 Presidential race for his own personal expeditures.
Sharpton ordered by a court to pay his portion of a $345,000 judgement for slander during the 1987 Tawana Brawley hoax.
2001, Al Sharpton serves a three month prison sentence for an illegal protest on U.S. military property the same year as the 9/11 attacks by Al Qaeda, when 90% of Americans supported the White House efforts to protect the U.S. from terrorism.
2007, Sharpton launches "a big time attack" to tear down the reputation of Senator Barack Obama.
1995, Sharpton leads a protest against a Jewish owned business, Freddy's Fashion Mart from setting up a new location in an African American neighborhood. Sharpton incited such antiJewush hate that a protestor that might have been inspired by Sharpton killed himself in a violent attack on the store including an arson fire that took 8 lives.
Sharpton inspired a 1991 deadly riot known as the Crown Heights Riot when he referred to Hasidic Jews as "Diamond merchants" and other outrageous language. A 29 year old Hasidic student from Australia was then killed by a mob chanting, "Kill The Jew".
Sharton victimizes both poor persons and the African American community by acting as a spokesman for a car title loan company called Loanmax that victimizes the poor through outrageous interest rates that rival that of loan sharks.
A 1983 episode of HBO's REAL SPORTS hosted by Bryant Gumbel featured an FBI tape of Sharpton discussing laundering drug money with a former mobster turned FBI informant, Michael Franzese. Sharpton was once closely associated with boxing promoter Don King, who had ties to some Columbo crime family figures. King had once served time for a manslaughter charge for the death of a man who owed King gambling money when King was involved in a illegal gambling business.
Sharpton appeared at a news conference with Michael Jackson, where they both falsely claimed that a racist conspiracy over at Sony records caused the musically poor album, INVINICIBLE to sell very poorly. But the strange allegations about Jackson's personal life as well as the poor music on INVINCIBLE were really to blame.
Al Sharpton badly mismanaged the funeral arrangements of music legend James Brown, where the transportation of the body to lie in state at the Apollo theatre was so badly botched up that Sharpton ended up transporting the body in back of a van himself. Other problems delayed the burial of the body for over 70 days, where the body now lays in a temporary grave until a permanent grave is built.
Don Imus merely botched up a single joke, and lost his 40 year radio career. When will Al Sharpton lose his radio show as a form of "lifetime achievement award" for his lifelong conduct which has indirectly cost human lives, promotted ethnic hate against Jews and against Whites, and resulted in other rotten conduct and violence?
McDonalds is the lead sponsor of the Al Sharpton Show on radio. I strongly suggest that interested persons complain to McDonalds Corporation and get them to pull their sponsorship and get the Sharpton Show off the public airwaves. I can't imagine that McDonalds would want to be assiociated with Sharpton if they knew all about his real history.

The cast of the View has an interest in defending Imus. It licenses them to make similarly derisive comments- or at least frees Rosie to do so. It's not as if they actually are capable of critical thinking.
It's nice that they brought up Sharpton's past, but even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut.

Maybe Al Sharpton with his extraordinary reach can get his brother O.J. Simpson, Imus's job, with whom he still has all due respect. At Johnnie Cochran's funeral Sharpton: "With all due respect to you brother Simpson, we didn't clap when the acquittal of Simpson came for O.J., we were clapping for Johnnie," the Rev. Al Sharpton said in his eulogy. "We were clapping because for decades our brothers, our cousins, our uncles had to stand in the well with no one to stand up for them. And finally a black man came and said, if it don't fit - you must acquit."

Sharpton has never apologized to Stephen Pagones. He is the last one to demand an apology from anyone. Imus' rantings, stupid as they are, have not resulted in eight deaths, as Sharpton's words have done.
These women absolutely did not deserve this treatment, but neither did Gwen Ifill deserve to be called a "cleaning lady" nor William Rhoden to be called a "quota hire." He also used the terms "boner nosed jewboy" and "Towelhead."
Liberals were, strangely, not offended by those remarks and continued to participate on Imus' show. For them now to express umbrage is absolute and utter hypocrisy.
As I have written many times here, I have detested Imus for a long time for these and other remarks. I want to know why liberals weren't similarly offended.
That is, until the archangels of racial political correctness paid a visit.

Because people are observing there's a double standard in play and that the 'rules' aren't being applied consistently. Let's agree that what Imus said was so egregious that it warranted his dismissal. With that as the standard, how is it what Sharpton has said is socially acceptable ? (for a review of that to which I'm referring see Paul H's post above)

shae arise, nobody has a problem with sharpton defending young women, the problem lies in the fact that his tactic of defense is to smear, judge, convict, and incite violence towards the accused. Accused who are often innocent, i.e., the Duke Lacrosse players, who were convicted by sharpton, jackson, the black panthers, basically the entire black community and thensome.

As far as I know the team in question is a mixed team...neither all black nor all white..and yes believe it or not white women do get nappy hair also...speaking from experience..so if you really think about it...it wasnt a racist comment ...but more a sexist comment??
