College students in Virginia will remain vulnerable
And here I thought Virginians had some common sense when it came to gun rights. Guess not.

A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.
House Bill 1572 didn't get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws.

The bill was proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, on behalf of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Gilbert was unavailable Monday and spokesman Gary Frink would not comment on the bill's defeat other than to say the issue was dead for this General Assembly session.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus."

And I'm sure the armed criminals are appreciative of the General Assembly's actions as well. This will help them victimize their prey and give them a full college campus of disarmed targets.

If you're smart, the fact that you carry a concealed weapon won't be an issue IF IT REMAINS CONCEALED -- and the next time some asshole whips out a gun because he just can't take it anymore, you can take him out.

I'm sure there's a possibility that one of those families actually supports the right to bear arms and there's a possibility that one of them could have been carrying. It is a Tech university, most of them were engineering students...(mostly conservative).

jp2, I'm sure they would have appreciated anything that would have saved their loved one.

That was sadly prophetic, Paul, I'd say nice find, but I can't find anything "nice" about this entire situation....

And nothing changes. Let's face it: these shootings are a permanent part of life in America.

When I was in high school the guys would make hardwood stocks in shop class and, I presume, attach them to shotgun hardware (more likely than rifles as ours was a "no rifle" deer hunting zone). I don't know if they had gun building kits or what. I just know they were making them in shop class. (Probably made deer antler handle buck knives, too.)

When I was in college there was a gun range in the basement of the Old Field House and for a while I was in the pistol club. A couple of the guys brought their personal weapons to show the rest of us.

I guess that means that in my life there were always guns on campus.

I'm not that old. Getting there, but not that old yet.
