Government Shutdown Tragically Avoided

It’s been 30 years since I last (and only) saw the Northern Lights. I was working at a YMCA camp (Camp Abnaki in North Hero, VT if anyone knows the place). Despite the late hour we rousted everyone out of bed to simply lay on the ground and enjoy the beauty that nature could deliver.

Seen them a total of 3 times, each while backpacking in the Adirondacks up through the Cedar River Flow. The last time, at Piseco Lake, they were particularly brilliant.

Very pretty. Too bad they had to ruin it with the new age music.

I grew up in rural SE Minnesota in the 70’s and 80’s and it wasn’t unusual for my mother to wake us up in the middle of the night to go out to watch the Northern lights, especially in the winter. This happened many times. I also saw them from ~30,000 ft up, on a flight from Boston to Minneapolis in October of 1984. Very awe-inspiring.

  • Very nice! It’s always been one of my goals to go up and see them with my Mark I eyeball.

I was lucky enough to see them when I was stationed in northern Maine, but never got as good a show as in the video.
