The Silence of the LSM

The “Acting” Head of the ATF Testified on July 4th that Attorney General Eric Holder has been lying to Congress and Obstructing Justice.

Gunwalker: The ATF’s Kenneth Melson Blows the Whistle on the Justice Department

A blockbuster development in the Operation Fast and Furious scandal.

by Hans A. von Spakovsky | PJM

n a blockbuster development in the Operation Fast & Furious gun-running scandal, Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson secretly testified before House and Senate investigators on July 4 with his own personal lawyer present, former United States Attorney Richard Cullen, without the knowledge of the ATF or the Department of Justice.

This morning, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa and Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Charles Grassley released a copy of a letter they sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on July 5 about Melson’s testimony. Melson’s revelations raise even more serious issues not only about the operation itself, but about apparent attempts by the Justice Department to mislead Congress on the details of the operation.

Contrary to the Justice Department’s denials, according to Melson, ATF agents specifically witnessed transfers of weapons from straw purchasers to third parties without taking any further action. Melson claimed that it was not until the public disclosure of the operation that he personally reviewed the “hundreds of documents” related to the case. He said he became “sick to his stomach” when he learned the full story. Even more shocking is that some of the “gun trafficking ‘higher-ups’ that the ATF sought to identify were already known to other agencies and may even have been paid as informants” by agencies such as the FBI and the DEA.

Think on that for a few moments. In what way is this not news?

How is this NOT Perjury and Obstruction of Justice by a sitting Attorney General of the United States?

One must wonder what the President knew, and when he knew it, as well.

"The kind of language you would expect from a leader of a third-world country, not the President of the United States"
  • I’ve seen speculation that this was supposed to help drive a nationwide gun grab, like the incidents in the UK and Australia impelled the governments to declare a total ban on long guns and handguns.

I don’t know if that’s the actuality – but you’ve got to kind of wonder who thought this was supposed to be a good idea.  Because the more I see of it, the less sense it makes.

“How is this NOT Perjury and Obstruction of Justice by a sitting Attorney General of the United States”

It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is?

Oh my God! [INSERT CONSERVATIVE POLITICIAN HERE] has just [INSERT EMBARRASSING EVENT HERE]! This requires all of our journalistic energies! How could we devote any time to a trivial matter such as this?

    • Rodney Graves

      No, Actually.

Then again, I am under the impression that your tongue is imbedded firmly in your cheek.

  • They are too busy making snide remarks and unfounded accusations about Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and any other Republican that dares to thwart the agenda of “Walks On Water” and the DemocRATs in the Congress, to do any serious reporting. Oh yeah, calling the Casey Anthony jury a pack of idiots, when they actually did their Constitutional duty is the soup dejour of the day.

The reason the Alinskiite MSM won’t report on this is because it views the law as a means to serve their ideological goals and not as serving all people.  They view the law as a tool to use against your enemies and not something that you enforce equally and fairly.

That’s why Holder exempted the New Black Panthers when the DOJ had already won a default judgement against them.  The law is to be used as a weapon to bludgeon your opponents and not to hurt your allies.

Likewise the media doesn’t want to report the corruption of the current admin because they were walking the guns so they could demagogue the issue of gun violence and claim that they needed to ban guns to prevent them from falling into the hands of Mexican crime lords.  The media holds to the same leftist agenda so breaking the law in furtherance of that agenda is A-OK with them.

I showed this story to an office mate who listens to NPR and this was the first he’d heard of it.  He was astonished that he hadn’t heard anything.  Fool.

I’m not surprised. Disappointed but not surprised.
They avoided reporting on John Edwards, Obama’s ties to domestic terrorists Dorn and Ayers.
They avoided the Obama campaigns illegal overseas contributions but did report, without evicdence, on McCains supposed affair with Vicki Iseman.

Palin? They’ve reported EVERYTHING, fact and fiction.

To this day, the LA Times refuses to release a tape in their possession of Barack Obama praising Rashid Khalidi at a Chicago gathering in 2003.

So no surprise here. But thanks to alternate media they won’t be able to supress as much as they used to.

I also have no doubt journolist exists, under a different guise.

The same crowd who salivated over viewing the emails of a private citizen (Palin) just cannot screw up the energy to look at malfeasance, or, at the very least, incompetence, on the part of the DOJ, which actions contributed to the murders of innocent people, including our own law enforcement officials. This is not a tragedy, but a scandal, compounded by media complicity in a conspiracy of irresponsible silence.

The same standards that the DOJ applied to the investigation of CIA interrogators must be applied to the far more reprehensible actions of DOJ officials, themselves.

Oh, yeah, and it’s about time they let go of the Sarah Palin hate-mongering. All they have succeeded in doing is validating her service to Alaska as a thoroughly engaged, hard-working, honest, conscientious public servant. Now that we all know it, give it a rest.

Someone on the the Right with the wherewithal needs to follow Alinsky’s advice and use the left’s most potent weapon against them.  The major media in the country needs to be sued for “Jouranlist Malpractice” for ignoring this story.

You are witnessing the start of a rollover, just like John Dean in the Nixon administration Kenneth Melson has ‘Gone off the reservation’ and spilled the beans that directly implicate the upper levels of management in the BATFE, DoJ, DEA and FBI.

This is going to make Watergate look like a prank phone call. You have the agents of the US goverment providing the funds to buy weapons to straw purchasers who are in turn supplying those weapons to the narcoterrorists in Mexico who are in effect destabilizing that goverment. Not to mention the hundreds of deaths the weapons can be directly tied to. All this is occuring under the auspices of an agency who’s job is to prevent occurrences like this from happening in the first place.

“Unexpectedly” is a word that comes to mind. I can’t wait to see how high this one reaches and how fast those responsible start turning to keep their sentences low and prevent them from being tried in Mexico.

One of Two facts must true: A) Holder knew about F & F and he’s lying about his bad decisions. B) Holder didn’t know about F & F therefore he’s operationally incompetent. Either way, I don’t see how he can legally remain in the office.

  • Where did they get the funding for this operation? I know Congress did not approve or appropriate any  funds for this boondoggle. Issa and others should also follow the money trail. I would not be very shocked to find out the major finances comes from none other than George Soros. Oh the trolls will dispute this and blame the Koch Brothers.

    • Anonymous

Funding was mainly by the straw buyer’s drug dollars flowing back for the firearms. FBI informants who were also straw purchasers used taxpayer dollars to make buys.

I doubt Soros would have anything to do with it even though he is a noted gun control contributor but nothing at this point would surprise me given the very nature of the criminality it took to launch and maintain the operation.

Funding for “Gunrunner” was in Barry’s “Stimulus”.  In the PDF version, it’s on page 16.

“…$10,000,000 shall be transferred to ‘‘Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives, Salaries and Expenses’’ for the ATF Project

Of course the Democrats never READ the bill they passed, so I doubt they are interested now in WHO put that into the spending bill.

The media gives us a million words about Casey Anthony’s conviction for lying to authorities but virtually nothing about perjury by the Attorney General of the United States.  Great job, LSM.

  • They keep hammering on how Federal law enforcement officers have been killed by the cartels and human smugglers. How about the civilian Americans that have been murdered by these same weapons? Two high profile murders come to mind right away. That rancher down near Tuscon and that man that was murdered while jetskiing down on the Tex-Mex border. I’ll bet if they really wanted to investigate those, they would find all of these cases will have one culprit. Operation Gunrunner.

  • Glenn Reynolds likes to say that he’ll start believing there is a crisis when those claiming there is one, start acting like it. My question here is: If there is such a crisis that gun control is required, why is the government itself putting guns into the hands of criminals? In addition, I would like to add that if the American people are so poorly served by our government agencies that they are actively putting guns into the hands of criminals, there has NEVER been a greater need for the public to have access to firearms.

“In what way?” Why, when the A.G. is a DEMOCRAT, of COURSE!!!!

    • donwalk

Boy! You hit that one right out of the park!
Would please post the facts about President Bush’s A.G. providing guns in this manner?

  • Anonymous

They just had a segment on Fox News about Gunwalker.  They even had a live interview with Congressman Issa, who seems to be very comfortable with following this all the way to the top…

Interesting that the nominal head of ATF gave “secret” testimony.  Guess he was afraid to tell his boss that he would appear.  Wonder if Eric Holder would care to comment?  Or is he a COWARD?
