Hollywood Mermaid Netted By Police

In 1984 Daryl Hannah washed up on U.S. shores as a mermaid. Now, it appears that she is just washed up.

The Associated Press reports the following:

Actress Daryl Hannah has been arrested in front of the White House along with other environmental protesters who oppose a planned oil  pipeline from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

    Just a silly Hollywood personality from the past trying to influence ‘The Won’.
    Free hint honey, he already hates the Oil Industry and every agency in his administration is infested with envirowhacko’s so odds are good you’ll get your wish. Getting ‘arrested’ protesting is pretty stupid now with so many other more effective methods of getting your message out that you hate low cost energy and independence from OPEC.

    She’s still not bad looking.

    I’ve concluded that Hollywood celebrities who take up causes come in two varieties:  effective and ineffective.  Effectives are the Kevin Costners and Bonos of the world.  The former owns a company that actually came up with ways to clean up oil in water, and the latter carried the cause of Third World debt relief to any leader who would listen — including Jesse Helms!!  And then you have the ineffectives, who are basically just out for their photo ops.

    Though, in fairness, I’ve read that Hannah actually tries to live a “green” lifestyle, which is more than can be said for the rest of the Gulfstream gorebots.

    A final decision on building the pipelinewill be made by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this year, based on whether the project is in the U.S. national interest. She is areadyleaning towards accepting it. Hence the protests!

    If Libya can  be seen to be in our national interest which is tendentiously  oil and the spread of human rights  in north africa and the  middle east it seems pretty clear that more an oil piplelind, even  dirty oil or dirty needles (as Dr. James Hansin calls them),  from Canada , will be considered in our national interest; of course, not in the interest of the globe or stemming climate change but every nation Canada, the USA, China, India, Brazil think of their national interests first ….until?

      When the White House or the President is involved, the rules are a bit different.  The Secret Service takes the whole protection gig very seriously.

      Once, waiting to go through a metal detector to see Reagan speak in Richmond, my friends and I passed the time joking around about preppy George Bush the elder, who wasn’t there.  But there were some Country Club ladies in front of us who obviously didn’t appreciate the comments.

      Inside, we were signaled by a Secret Service agent to come to him.  He inquired about our behavior in line.  I told him exactly what happened, that it was just joking around, and we did have freedom of speech.  He leaned over to us and said quite clearly, “You get funny in here, we will throw your asses out.”

      He wasn’t kidding, either.

      There are a few rules, and they’re not particularly tough ones.

      The regulation this group has been consistently breaking is the “you can’t sit on the sidewalk in front of the White House” one.  You can stand, you can walk around, you can carry signs, you can even chant – but sitting is a no-no.  This group (and others) stage sit-ins to get arrested, since it’s a minor assumption by the Park Service cops that people doing that are going to be nonviolent and will come quietly.

      So… no, they’re not being arrested for free speech issues, they’re being arrested for blocking the sidewalk with their butts.

          Yes, I’ve had to walk around protesters several times in my life, and I’ve seen quite a few arrested for breaking laws.

          That’s the first thing you should think of when you see people being arrested for “protesting.”  They’re seldom being arrested for speaking their minds – it’s almost always something like “blocking a public thoroughfare” or “damaging public/private property.”  One guy I knew got arrested, in his words, for “speaking out against the government” after he took a swing at a cop who asked him to stop blocking the sidewalk.
