If anything, the Obama supporters in my family have really backed off on the political stuff. Each year I could count on ‘Bushisms’ calendars, and there was a lot of gloating when Obama was elected.
And then the gloating ceased about six months in. I brought up the subject of politics about two years back, and my sister-in-law looked disgusted and replied “Let’s not talk about that.”
Thing is, she was a CPA for quite a while, for a major company. She ‘retired’ about a decade back, but the principles haven’t changed, 2+2=4 and at the end of the day the books have to balance, and she can see for herself that the books aren’t balancing at all, that the deficits she bitched about under Bush have grown astronomically while he’s doing what he can to actually stifle job growth.
I’m thinking she’ll be an ABO voter. She might not like the conservative candidate, but she dislikes Obama even more.
And as far as politics go, we still don’t talk about them… and that’s fine.
jim_m
My parents were huge obama supporters but have mostly shut up about politics. The only difficulty is my sister and myself keeping our mouths shut and not keeping a refrain of “I told you so”.
herddog505
Is it just me, or is there something kind of “yech” about the president making commercials about how his supporters can “support” him amongst their family members? It’s one thing to run a campaign – every politician does that – but this is starting to resemble a cult of personality.
At any rate, there’s only one democrat in my family, and (as JLawson writes) she’s gotten to where she “doesn’t want to talk about it”.
http://www.rustedsky.net Anonymous
Well, that’s kind of the way I’ve been thinking about Obama’s Presidency. It doesn’t matter what he proposes, there’s going to be people thinking he’s the best thing ever – even if they get royally screwed by the proposed programs. And then there were the ‘If you love me, pass my bill” moments…
WTF? “If you love me”?
You gotta wonder after a while if Obama’s buying into his own hype.
As it is, I’m watching the Republican ‘selection’ process – does it seem to anyone else that it more resembles ‘American Idol’ than a sober deliberation of the actual qualities and proposals of the candidates against what the country’s facing today?
Ah, well. It’ll all work out some way or another. I’ll be voting for the Republican candidate, not a third party (even if I think the third party one is the nominal best) because I seriously don’t want another 4 years of Obama. I’ll take ‘good enough’ over ‘perfect’ any day of the week.
Anonymous
Is Obama buying into his own hype?
He’s creating it and it is not based in reality. For example:
” In fact, I am proud to say that no US administration has done more in support of Israel’s security than ours. None. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. It is a fact,” President Obama told a Jewish group on Friday. [12/16]
Or this: ” …I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president – with the possible exceptions of Johnson, FDR, and Lincoln – just in terms of what we’ve gotten done in modern history.”
http://www.rustedsky.net Anonymous
It’s one thing to create a falsehood – it’s another to believe it. If he’s believing his own hype, then there’s a real problem.
Well, not like there isn’t one already…
jim_m
Next we will be hearing how obama shot 38 under par with 11 hole in ones.
I’m starting to think that the man is mentally ill.
herddog505
Given that the seas automatically started to recede and the planet started to heal just by his simple act of getting elected, why would it be hard to believe that he’s such a great golfer?

My guess is you (Lawson, Herddog) don’t live in blues states, or at least not true-blue states. Here in CT we still have an abundant crop of happy, excited Obama supporters. I can’t explain that for you, but then I also can’t explain why people living in a state with hilly terrain and temperatures that drop below freezing (and even zero) for extended periods over the course of winter would want to own/drive hybrid and electric cars… no doubt there is some linkage however.

Sub-lethal carbon monoxide poisoning, perhaps? Have they had their furnaces checked?
herddog505
I’ve read that many criminals lack foresight, the ability to understand / foresee the consequences of their actions.
In this regard (as well as the belief that it’s virtuous to take somebody’s money because he’s “rich”), democrats are very like criminals: they can’t foresee the consequences of their actions. Just as a crook can’t see past the immediate gratification of having money after robbing a convenience store, dems can’t see past the immediate gratification of buying a “green” car to save Mother Gaia or of winning an election.
Anonymous
Sooooooo then democrats are “very like” criminals? Would you care to support that with ANY data?
I could say that I feel the same way about republican/conservatives but then that would be very uninformed and stupid of me so I won’t.
herddog505
Quite aside from the fact that, as I wrote above, dems have the idea that it’s perfectly fine to take money from another person because he’s rich, how else to explain the fetish dems have for giving the vote to felons other than confidence that crooks vote democrat? There is some research to back this up:
By any measure, felons overwhelmingly vote for Democrats.
Academic work by Jeff Manza and Marcus Britton of Northwestern University and Christopher Uggen of the University of Minnesota estimated that Bill Clinton pulled 86 percent of the felon vote in 1992 and a whopping 93 percent in 1996.
Obviously, these are average numbers. More heavily Democratic areas such as Minneapolis-St. Paul would very likely have percentages of felons voting for Democrats that are above these rates. If heavily Democratic Minneapolis-St. Paul were just 3 percentage points above the average, than felon voting in just this one county gave Franken his win.
Other evidence suggests that Manza and Britton’s study underestimates the rate that felons vote for Democrats. In my own work, I examined a Public Opinion Strategies survey that interviewed 602 adults in Washington State in May 2005.
Of the respondents, 102 were felons who had their voting rights restored, while 500 were non-felons. Even after accounting for other differences that predict how people vote — race, gender, education level, religious habits, employment, age, and county of residence — felons were 36 percent more likely than non-felons, with the same characteristics, to have voted for John Kerry over George W. Bush and 37 percent more likely to be registered Democrats.
African-American and Asian felons in Washington reported that they voted exclusively for Kerry.
Now, obviously, not all democrats are criminals or even would-be criminals any more than all Republicans are would-be klan members who want to pollute the air and water, sell the country to Wall Street, and send minorities to fight and die in Iran in the service of Wall Street and our Joooooo masters. However, I must say that I’ve been much amused when dems have let the mask slip and admit that they are (ahem) a little disappointed when Barry has done things like get (stay?) in bed with Wall Street, bomb Libya, fail to close Gitmo, not pay their mortgage and fuel bills, etc.:
“How could you not see this coming??? Oh, wait… it’s that whole lack of foresight thing. Got it.”

I’m sorry but when you cite Fox News Opinion (actually pretty much all of Fox News is opinion) as a source your argument loses all credibilty with the regular world.
One question. Are felons only democrats?
jim_m
And your laughable comment about FOX news reveals you to be a brainless crank that accepts far left fever swamp conspiracy theories uncritically and without any thought.
Thanks for self identifying as a tinfoil hat loon.
herddog505
Obviously not.
BTW, though it’s an opinion piece, Lott cites various studies and surveys including some of his own work, i.e. actual data.
Grass is green, the sun rises in the east, and water is wet whether or not these things are written in an opinion piece, news article, government report, textbook, or even blog post.
jim_m
Only an ass (Hugh_G) would dispute that felons vote heavily democrat. There have been multiple studies on this and the dems are continually making efforts to give the right to vote back to felons. Why would they do that if they thought that felons would vote GOP?
But what is the opinion of a Univ of Chicago Economist, and a couple of Northwestern Univ professors. These are certainly third tier institutions with no credibility. I mean, it’s not like the econ faculty at U of C have ever won 26 Nobel prizes for Economics or anything. Heck, they must let anyone teach there. We can dismiss Lott’s ideas out of hand without any examination.
No, not all felons are Democrats. But you guys hate to talk about that 1% . . .
http://www.rustedsky.net Anonymous
Hugh_G – I don’t know about you, but when I look at the current crop of Dem leadership, I see people who are trying hard to maximize their chances in the next election, doing whatever they can with no thought of long-term consequences. They’re not looking beyond the election – the future doesn’t matter to them, what does matter is getting elected however they can manage.
Felon sees something they’d like – they take it. That it’s against the law doesn’t matter, that they might go to jail for it doesn’t matter. Chalk it up to whatever you want, poor impulse control, bad upbringing or whatever – but the future consequences of their actions don’t figure into the equation.
herddog505
In all fairness, the same may be said about the GOP leadership.* The dems are running the car off a cliff; the GOP is saying, “Hey, not quite so fast!”
—-
(*) Is there a term for people who are in positions of authority who are transparently selfish, dishonest and incompetent?
Oh, yeah: “Congress”.
http://www.rustedsky.net Anonymous
I at least see some forms of rationality inside the GOP leadership, IE the acknowledgement that we’ve got to start reining in spending… though that’s more from the back seat of the party. They haven’t got their hands on the wheel yet, and can’t do much.
Term limits might be the only answer.

Your comment about Dem leadership is interesting in that the leader of Repubs. in the Senate has stated that his #1, I’ll say it again, “1 priority is to see that Obama is not elected. That’s doing the peoples’ work isn’t it?

Yeah. Actually it is. Defending them from a huckster is a very noble undertaking.

The first thing to do when someone’s ripping you off and stealing your future is to stop them. For all the ire directed against the ‘rich’, and ‘corporations’, and all the hype for ‘income equality’ – I’m seeing a hell of a lot more theft from those pushing attention at the ‘rich’ and so on than we’re seeing from the rich.
But then, Orwell was right with the ‘Some animals are more equal than others’ thing, wasn’t he? WE dare not even think that Obama might not be a Godhead personified, with every thought and decision complete and perfect. And when things go wrong… it’s never HIS fault, because his intentions are pure and holy.
Kipling had it right in “The Gods of the Copybook Headings”.
In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all, By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul; But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy, And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”
Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.
Or, to put it in a shorter form, Reality is a cold bitch that doesn’t care how eloquent or persuasive you are.
At this point – it’s time to limit damage. The first thing to do with a thief who’s robbing you is to stop his theft. And that starts with getting Obama out of office.

Same here in Ma, UOG, where we have Obama-lite doing the same things on a smaller scale. (See Evergreen, for example). But the daffy Obama supporters remain thrilled.
In my small town, we have a local democrat party organization run by a former friend. She fully supports the OCW protests, loathes the so-called 1%, hates the evil capitalists, and then heads off to her second home on the Cape.

Socialism is NEVER for the socialists.
jim_m
I’ve long contended that I would love to be a communist dictator. You don’t have to live under communism. You get to reap the benefit of all the labor of the oppressed masses.
I honestly think that this is the appeal of communism to the left. They presume that they will not be the oppressed, but as party apparatchiks they will be able to reap the benefit of the labors of the rest of us.
herddog505
While being a dictator certainly has appeal, I don’t think I could be a socialist or communist dictator as I would not be able to stop laughing whenever I had to make a speech about doing this or that “for the workers”. It sort of takes away from the dignity of the office, if you see what I mean. Plus, the proles might get the idea that I really DON’T care about them, that it’s really all about me.
Which, of course, it would be.

Are they supposed to “argue with them” and “get in their faces”? And please, please, tell me what it is that Obama has done, what exactly have they seen over the last 3 years from Obama, that they want more of – so much so that these kids family members have converted?
I would love for a visiting family member (likely my brother) to try and convert me over the holiday so I can ask them the same question. What is it that they like so much? The ballooning debt? The deficit? The stubbornly high unemployment? The inflation? The threat of higher and higher energy costs? The uncertainty of their own job stability because of drowning regulations for their company? The eroding foreign relations we have with traditional allies? The politicizing of tradionally non-partisan government departments? Exactly what are they so happy with that they want four more years?

Whew- and when it comes to insults, I don’t suppose you read or write about the ones written on this blog about President Obama on a daily basis? And no I don’t believe Trig is her daughter’s son. What I believe is that she’s a grifter. She’s incredibly ignorant about the world and she knows how to make money. The making money part is way OK.
