Komen CEO defends decision to defund Planned Parenthood (UPDATED)

The pro-aborts are up in arms and are slinging many arrows in the direction of the breast cancer awareness charity.  The following is from SGK Founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker defending the decision:

Hats of to her and her organization as they find out how committed the baby-killers truly are.

UPDATE: Komen reverses, and caves to the death culture:

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast-cancer charity said it is reversing its decision to cut breast-screening grants to Planned Parenthood.

“We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” a Komen statement said.

As reported by the Associated Press on Tuesday, Komen had adopted criteria excluding Planned Parenthood from grants because it was under government investigation, notably a probe launched in Congress at the urging of anti-abortion groups.

Komen said Friday it would change the criteria so it wouldn’t apply to such investigations.

“We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants,” the statement said.

Sad and frankly, infuriating.  Proof that principle means nothing today to far too many and that would now include the Susan G. Komen foundation.

And it proves how entrenched the death culture really is.

Shameful day.  A most shameful day.

That’s one very intense lady and she’s perfectly clear about SGK’s goals and procedures. The Upset Old Gal and I will continue with our annual support of the organization. We don’t support United Way, but we’ll continue with Komen.

Update, 4:50 pm – Ok, so they can changed their minds. That’s their right. Just like the Upset Old Gal and I have changed our minds. SGK is off our donations list, not to be returned to our list even if they change their minds yet again. UOG

I’m glad that Wizbang is covering this cataclysmic event in such detail.  What Komen does with its money is of extreme significance to all Americans.

Don’t sweat it!! You can still vote ABO and save a trill or two in the process…

    • jim_m

A lot of the discussion has been about abortion in general and not as much about Komen.  But you have to admit that the left has been up in arms about this defection from the status quo, hacking the Komen web site, issuing condemning letters, etc.

It’s a good opportunity to demonstrate the intolerance the left has for any viewpoint other than their own.

      • Commander_Chico

It’s all politicial Kabuki theater, all actors replaying their roles to mobilize their voter bases.  Nothing will change.  “Sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

          Stephen

The foundation explicitly stated they would use the funding that would have gone to PP for  mammiograms to the poor just not through PP.

          a.  Why does PP want the money so badly if all they do is pay for mammiograms to the poor with it?  (bet you wont answer this0.  Surely if the foundation is spending the same amount of money for the same thing elsewhere it shouldnt bother PP or you a wit.

          b.  Donations the foundation have increased 100% since this anncouncement.  That means even more mammiograms for the poor though not through PP.

          c.  PP has recieved more than $600 k in donations since this was announced to replace this money.  So they still have money to spend on mammiograms for the poor.

in short as usual you dont have a fucking clue what you are talking about, you are ignoring the facts and you are just pissed off that PP isnt getting money from the foundation anymore.

      Etc.

Note the word in the first link: “crisis”.  In the second, we see that members of Congress got involved.  So, I believe that Wizband and its commenters may be absolved from accusations of focusing on a fringe issue, don’t you?

As I wrote in another post, Komen decided to stop paying its tithes to the Holy Church of Abortion, and the left had a friggin’ conniption.  The good work of people like Kermit Gosnell must go on!

      • Commander_Chico

Since when is the MSM “all Americans?”  By that standard, Kim Kardarshian’s ass is the most important thing in the world.

The oligarchs stoke The Cultural Wars, because they don’t want you to notice they’re picking your pocket through TARP and QE, and starting another war in an oil-producing country.

        • herddog505

No, this isn’t about the Conspiracy: this is about the left bullying an organization into funding abortion.

As to its importance relative to Kim Kardashian’s anatomy… that’s up to the conscience of the individual! (I wonder just how much she has to pay for that thing, in money and in hours at the gym)

          • Commander_Chico

They love this stuff because it allows them to put two talking heads on to argue with each other, producing heat but no light.

And again, it mobilizes the respective voter bases.

I think Kim just is that way – you can find similar items on any city street in the summer.

  • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

    F = I.W.

    Freedom = I Won’t.

Komen decided they didn’t have to continue supporting Planned Parenthood.  And they decided to exercise their freedom to change their minds.

That’s their right.  They’re free to allocate the money as they see fit, within the scope of their purpose.

But did you ever notice just how the concept of ‘freedom’ for some people depends in their being able to force others to pay for what they themselves want?   And that once money is donated to the cause, that donor better keep on paying?  (Look at the OWS folks, who were demanding free food from local vendors.  Teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime, give a man a fish, and the next day he’ll be back looking to get another one from you, and be pissed if you don’t cheerfully provide…)

If you believe the availability of an abortion is important – then go ahead and pay for it.  Donate your money where you think it’ll do the most good.  Start your own foundation – nobody is stopping you.  Take on the responsibility of paying for what you want instead of demanding that other people fund it who might not want to.   There is nobody stopping you from allocating your charitable donations to whatever group you want to give them to.

If you believe it’s important to stop abortion – then go ahead and try to do it. I personally don’t like it – haven’t since I held my infant son. (Looking at him 13 years later, I’m amazed that little blanket-wrapped bundle’s grown into someone I can respect.)

I really think it needs to stay legal – but I also don’t believe that I have any right to tell someone else how they need to live their lives.  Not my job, ya dig?  I’ve got enough to handle with my own life, much less trying to control what I don’t like other people doing.

And that brings us to the other meaning of  “F = I.W.”

Freedom = I Will.  When I decide to.  When I want to.  When in my opinion I need to.  When I have decided what I need to do.  Other input is appreciated – but in the end it’s MY decision what I believe – MY decision to decide what to do, who to support and who to put my money on.

Or not.  (Shrug.)  That’s freedom for you.

Freedom is the ability to say yes or no to an idea.  To believe what YOU want, not what someone else tells you you have to.  To make up your own mind, for your own reasons.  But with that freedom comes the responsibility to accept the costs of your actions – to back up what you’re decided by accepting the consequences of your decision.

And it looks like the Komen foundation’s willing to do that.

    Good on them.

So it’s OK when leftists pressure someone, but not if the right does?

If the Komen decision was on their own originally, it’s OK for leftists to pressure them to change?

The answer to both questions is yes in case you’re too stupid to figure it out.  (which you are).  But the point is your hypocritical complaint that the right wing pressured Komen and made them pull the funding and that somehow it is wrong that the right was allowed to do that.

Everyone has the right to advocate for their agenda, not just liberal bigots like you.  So when we call you anti-American it is in part because you are against anyone else having a voice. Simple as that.

          • BILLYBAROOOOOOO

You are right sorry for caling you a liar on this one post.

But you did not answer why Komen cannot take their grants and give them DIRECTLY to the cancer healthcare centers since PP does not do the mammograms?

Now if you would please explain these facts away.

Do you know what the founder of PP Margaret Sanger said in her own words?-Several years later, Margaret Sanger wrote the following in a letter to Clarence Gamble:”We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. WE DON’T WANT THE WORD TO GO OUT THAT WE WANT TO EXTERMINATE THE NEGRO POPULATION. And the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.” Margaret Sanger’s December 19, 1939 letter to Dr. Clarence Gamble, 255 Adams Street, Milton, Massachusetts. “-Margaret Sanger admits it in her own Autobiography:”Always to me any aroused group was a good group, and therefore I accepted an invitation to talk to the women’s branch of the Ku Klux Klan…As someone came out of the hall I saw through the door dim figures parading with banners and illuminated crosses. I waited another twenty minutes. It was warmer and I did not mind so much. Eventually the lights were switched on, the audience seated itself, and I was escorted to the platform, was introduced, and began to speak…In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered.” (Margaret Sanger: An Autobiography, P.366)-You progs keep telling yourself it is about the womens choice. Isn’t it interesting that the KKK always comes up when talking about Progressive Dems? The KKK an American Democratic founded organization, but the Republicans who passed the Civil Rights act that was fought by the Prog Dems are the racists ones.

Speaking cynically, this was a boon for both organizations.

Planned Parenthood got an influx of donations from the left.  Komen got an influx from the right and will now get one from the left.  I’m sure they didn’t plan it that way, but they sure made out financially in the near term.  Of course Komen is going to get slammed financialy from the right now.  And deservedly so.  Too bad for them that the right does far more charitable giving than the left.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R7FMXY3DZP7JF7SGSPIOSLLXNE Stephen

It’ll take Komen a decade to recover for this PR disaster.

Their donations have already increased 100%.

It might take them a decade to overcome changing their minds.

    • herddog505

It occurs to me that Komen knuckling under is a win-win for the left.  In the short term, they get to claim victory.  In the long term, the baby murder money keeps flowing.  Further, IF Komen loses ANY funding (even if due to conservatives closing their checkbooks out of disgust at Komen’s craven surrender), the left can hold that up as evidence of why other NPO’s and donors must never, ever cut off the money.  “Oh, youse don’t wanna pay up, huh?  Remember what happened to Komen?  It could happen to YOUSE, pal.  Now, yuh SURE youse don’t wanna pay?”

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R7FMXY3DZP7JF7SGSPIOSLLXNE Stephen

You betcha. The next time religious extremists muscle money away from poor people getting mammograms Dems will be there to bitch slap them into submission.

        Count on it.

  • JWH

The problem here has nothing to do with abortion.  The problem is that Komen made a nakedly political decision, tried to assert it wasn’t a political decision, mangled its damage control in the PR fallout, then caved in under pressure.  This entire brouhaha could have been avoided if a) Komen had continued to fund PP; b) Komen had cut the PP grants at the same time it cut grants to outside groups that met some other, similar criteria as PP; or c) admitted it had made a nakedly political decision and lived with the consequences of that.

  • Wild_Willie

How about d? They can do what they want with their money without giving a reason at all. That would be freedom, but the left does not understand equality and freedom works both ways.

What the right can now do is support the chairman of the committee that is investigating PP using tax payer funds illegally and support him. I did not know this was happening until I heard the Komen annoucement. Maybe we can finally shut down the financially lucrative baby killing machine. The left won’t do it. ww

  • Sky__Captain

It is obvious by now that L’il Stephen is the poster child for abortions.

Didn’t somebody say yesterday that the religious extremists on the right have been pressuring Komen for years?

Oh yeah, that was me, who then took a barrage of monkey poo from the pack of poo fllngers who wanted a link, blah blah, fart fart…

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has long been under pressure

Antiabortion activists have tried for years to break the foundation’s ties to Planned Parenthood.

As a minority women’s health activist, Eve Sanchez Silver was proud of
her work with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The organization had almost
single-handedly turned breast cancer awareness into a national cause, with its pink ribbons appearing on tote bags, containers of yogurt and even NFL football fields.

But in 2004, she learned that some of the group’s local chapters gave money to Planned Parenthood affiliates to pay for breast exams for low-income women. Silver
couldn’t help feeling that the more money Planned Parenthood had, the more abortions its clinics could perform.

By the end of the year, she had resigned from Komen’s Hispanic-Latino Advisory Committee and found a new mission: pressure Komen to cut all financial ties to Planned
    Parenthood.

“You cannot be a life-affirming organization in league with an organization that kills people,” Silver said.

So began a slow-growing fissure between two pillars of women’s health
that culminated in a full-blown breach this week when it became known
that Komen had decided to stop funding about $650,000 in breast-health
services at 16 Planned Parenthood affiliates. On Friday, in the face of
overwhelming public pressure, Komen reversed itself.

I said “More than 6 years” — somebody help Jimm with the math.

    and here’s the link Jim-M – lol..  http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-komen-planned-parenthood-tictoc-20120204,0,4481867.story

There’s more coming, including a link to a prominent GOP politician and a right wing media personality.

I’m thinking I may want to hold the link to the GOP politician until I see if they get on the ticket, and then release it. It’ll do a lot more good.

    Party on…
