Obama Invokes Nixonian Executive Privilege But Scolded Bush for the Same Thing

Good for me but not for thee is Obama’s refrain as he invoked Executive Privilege to keep hidden his actions with the disastrous Justice Dept. program called Fast & Furious — a program responsible for several deaths of American law enforcement officers as well as hundreds of Mexican citizens.

In 2007 when George W. Bush fired a small handful of U.S. Attorneys, he invoked Executive Privilege to prevent a Democrat controlled Congress from looking into his firings. At that time Obama went before the cameras of the Larry King Show to denounce Bush for hiding “behind Executive Privilege every time there’s something a little shaky taking place.”

Yet now that Congressional investigators are looking into the disastrous and murderous gun running program sponsored by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Obama is suddenly invoking the very thing he scolded Bush for using.

There can be only one reason for this: Obama was fully aware of the program and knew that people were dying. Now he’s trying to hide it.

The White House is defending its use of EP claiming that it has waited longer than any recent president to use the artifice.

This single fact is true, of course. Then again when a president has a subservient Congress and a subservient press for most of his first term in office, he doesn’t need to use Executive Privilege, right?

Worse, Obama, Holder and a cadre of leftists have been claiming that this was all Bush’s fault and that a similar, earlier program was started under Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey. The Bush AG knew about this program, they said. Holder even asserted this in his Congressional testimony.

Now even that has been retracted. Representative Darrell Issa now reports that Holder has made a retraction saying he “inadvertently made the claim.”

So, it appears that there really was no such knowledge, nor was the earlier program similar to Obama’s Fast & Furious.

The truth appears to be Obama lied, people died.

Can’t wait for Obama’s next press conference, one where he actually has to answer questions.

As for Holder, having lost control of his lies, he had to go this route.
Recall that on Feb 2nd, this year, he testified that “There’s no attempt at any kind of cover-up,” and that “We’re not going to be hiding behind any kind of privileges or anything,”

    • Hope you’re not holding your breath on that conference…

Of course 0bama wants to cover up what amounts to an act of war against our southern neighbor.

“Kinetic law-enforcement action”, I think you mean.

“There can be only one reason for this: Obama was fully aware of the
program and knew that people were dying. Now he’s trying to hide it.”

But….but…..but……we were 1st told that Fast and Furious was run by ROUGE AGENTS. And that “gun walking NEVER happened. And that the White House had no knowledge or involvement in the program.

Now Barry wants to exercise Executive Privilege to keep from releasing documents about a program that NEVER occurred and to which he had NO knowledge.

HEY KOOL AID DRINKERS! You want to explain this?

BTW, NO ONE DIED in the Gonzalez incident.

Exactly right. The only reason to invoke Executive Privilege is because the scandal reaches directly into the oval office, otherwise the invoking of privilege is not legally sustainable.

United States V Nixon restricted Exec Privilege to communications directly with the President so this amounts to an admission that 0bama knew about Fast and Furious even though he has repeatedly declared that he did not know.

The best part: Even MSNBC has got to cover the story now. The MSM can no longer ignore a story when 0bama is seeking exec privilege protection that even Nixon was denied.

    • It’s the coverup that gets you.

I tell the little guy, it’s a lot easier being honest and open, that way you don’t have to keep track of the lies you tell… and they won’t come back to bite you in the yarbles.

Who wants to bet how the left will try to spin this?
    — It’s actually all Bush’s fault!
    — Barry HAD to invoke executive priviledge to prevent a rethuglikkkan, racist witch hunt against his selfless, highly competent AG
    — Republicans do it, too!
    — Executive priviledge means that Barry doesn’t have to tell anybody anything about anything he or anybody he knows ever said, wrote, thought, or anything!
    — It’s all Bush’s fault! (I’m guessing that’s going to be the default position)
    — If it’s such a scandal, why haven’t the Mexicans complained?
    — It’s the NRA’s fault!
Really, the sky’s the limit here.

Can we choose “All of the above”?

  • Stan Brewer

Notice that the usual afternoon press gaggle was not held. The excuse was that they were all jet lagged from the long trip to Mexico. Ha. They did not want to have the press gaggle pound Jay Carney on the Executive Privilege and Fast and Furious eruptions.

Yep he’s no Bush that’s for sure, he’s much more like Nixon. I’m unclear on something though is this the hope or the change?
