Anderson Cooper, “The Fact Is, I’m Gay”

Well knock me over with a feather…

CNN’s Anderson Cooper, in an e-mail exchange with Andrew Sullivan, confirmed what pretty much everyone on earth already knew, he’s gay.

Andrew, as you know, the issue you raise is one that I’ve thought about for years. Even though my job puts me in the public eye, I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life. Part of that has been for purely personal reasons. I think most people want some privacy for themselves and the people they are close to.

…Recently, however, I’ve begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle. It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something – something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true.

I’ve also been reminded recently that while as a society we are moving toward greater inclusion and equality for all people, the tide of history only advances when people make themselves fully visible. There continue to be far too many incidences of bullying of young people, as well as discrimination and violence against people of all ages, based on their sexual orientation, and I believe there is value in making clear where I stand.

The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.

CNN has to be a little pissed off at Cooper for coming out to a blogger. Their ratings are so low that they could use the boost in viewership an big announcement might have brought. It will be interesting to monitor how heavily they cover the story. More coverage = ratings desperation.

You know, I had to take a few days away from commenting after last weeks major news story, the one that affects us all – the Cruise Holmes split.
Just as I’m getting over that, there’s this.

And is it also true Cooper is white?

    • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

      Really?

Wait – let me examine the ‘Care’ meter….

Nope, still ain’t twitching. Did someone pull the circuit breaker on that thing?

Nope, power’s good. There’s just no reason to care.

If he was a hermaphrodite who was dating Barneys Frank. Now that would be ‘newsworthy!’

    NOT!!

CNN’s grasp of news is so poor that Anderson Cooper thinks that this admission is something that the entire world was not aware of. Completely clueless.

Also, the pope told an Italian blogger today, “The fact is, I’m Catholic.”

    • jim_m

      Very good

  • Digg34

I think they just put this stuff out there in the hopes that conservatives will say something about not watching him. Liberals love to believe that all conservatives really care about the sexual preferences of other people.

Cooper’s still on the air? Hmph. How about that.

Just out of curiosity, when did it become fashionable for media types and “celebrities” to simply HAVE to let us know:
    1) their sexual orientation
    2) their perversion of choice
    3) their drug(s) of choice
    4) their religion
    5) their monetary worth

Andrew Sullivan explains: “The visibility of gay people is one of the core means for our equality.”

And Cooper’s admission is certainly a step in the right direction for LGBT visibility. After all, who better to have in your corner than a respected, Emmy-winning journalist popularly known as “the Silver Fox”?”

Apparently it matters to gays that those who are gay are visible and not hiding in the closet. “The visibility of gay people is one of the core means for our equality.” That makes sense and explains why Cooper might have chosen now to publicly come out of the closet.

Cooper, the son of Gloria Vanderbilt, had long been the subject of rumors about his sexual orientation. He said that in a perfect world, it wouldn’t be anyone’s business, but that there is value in “standing up and being counted.”
“I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t
mean an end to a small amount of personal space,” he wrote. “But I do
think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter’s shield of privacy.”

“Even prior to coming out publicly, Anderson’s terrific work has raised
awareness of inequalities facing LGBT people, said GLAAD President
Herndon Graddick. “He’s a role model to millions and now will inspire
      countless others.”

It IS a perfect world – it’s nobody’s business but his which direction his plumbing points.

Since it appears to be “everyone’s” decision as to whether gays marry or not, those people should know who they are discriminating against.

          • jim_m

Just as it really doesn’t matter whether or not the news anchor is married or single. Just STFU and report the news honestly. The problem is that most of the lefties are utterly incapable of doing that simple task.

          • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

Yep. I don’t care what you do in your spare time with those three prostitutes, a spare tire, two quarts of 90w gear lube and a goat.

          • Guest

And I don’t care if you care or not. I’m talking in general terms- you really shouldn’t take everything personally… unless it does apply, then you ought to have the balls to admit it and defend your position and not just throw stones at the messenger.

          • Guest

Yeah, I get double posts too. I think the secret is to click Post and then wait, eventually I get a message indicating that there is one new comment.

          • Vagabond661

I don’t think discriminating is the right word there. It’s not discriminatory. By definition, gays cannot marry. Marriage is between a man and a woman. Make civil unions equivalent to marriages and no more problem. Churches can have marriages and gays can have civil unions. Nobody would have a problem with that would they?

          • Guest

Aaparently gays do. For some odd reason, they don’t consider themselves lesser than heterosexuals, and don’t see why they shouldn’t have the exact same rights under the US Constitution.

          • jim_m

They have exactly the same right to marry someone of the opposite sex as anyone else. If they want to create another sort of legal union that is entirely their right and they should lobby for that right. Many people would support them for that. However, marriage has a specific historical definition that many people do object to changing.

There isn’t anything that comes with the legal recognition of marriage that gays could not get by simply calling it a different name because the relationship is actually different. It basically comes down to the desire for activists to offend and insult those they disagree with and a desire to ram their agenda down everyone else’s throat.

Had there been a concerted effort for a national recognition of some sort of civil union that was not called marriage, this issue would have been over about ten years ago.

          • http://wizbangblog.com/author/rodney-graves/ Rodney G. Graves

            DERP!

          • Vagabond661

lesser than heterosexuals? is that your view, too? Sounds like a self image problem and not a legal problem. What rights do they not have under the US Constitution?

          • Guest

Why can’t gay churches have gay marriages?

Because anti-gay factions are discriminating against them.

Because marriage has been understood to be between two people of the opposite sex. They could consecrate a union but they should not pretend that it is the same as a marriage

          • jim_m

Because marriage has been understood to be between two people of the opposite sex. They could consecrate a union but they should not pretend that it is the same as a marriage. And because these so-called gay churches may belong to a larger denomination that does not recognize such unions.

Deal with it. You don’t like it? Go start your own religion.

          • Guest

My question was – why can’t gay churches marry gay couples.

            Your answer didn’t address that.

And what you’re saying is… if gay people started their own church, then their marriages would be just a legit as any others?

Who issues the marriage license? The church or the state?

          • jim_m

Of course the state issues the marriage license and you do not even need a church to get married. The whole gay objection is that they want to force churches to alter their 2000+ year old dogma to satisfy their own ideological demands.

It has nothing to do with equality and everything to do with left wing intolerance of religion.

          • Guest

No, they want to get married to the partner of their choosing, the same way heterosexuals do.

They don’t want to settle for “civil unions” – they want to get married under the eyes of God in the church of their choosing.

          • 914

They can call it whatever they want. But it is not and will never be marriage.

      • GarandFan

So we’re to judge people by their “gayness”?

        • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

Yes, and now, BECAUSE he’s come out, we’re supposed to watch his show.

          I decline. Respectfully.

        • jim_m

NO. We cannot judge them by their gayness. Because to judge would imply the possibility that we would judge them negatively.

No. We are to approve of them based on their gayness.

          • GarandFan

Speaking of “approval”. We’ve got a new law in the education code here in Kalifornia. The GAY preference of people in US history is to be pointed out to students IF that person made positive contributions.. However, if the person in question has done something reprehensible…. say like John Gacy…..you’ll get in trouble by mentioning his sexual preference.

        • Guest

I think the point of gays in the spotlight who publicly come out isn’t “judging people by their gayness” — but rather “judging homosexuality by its people.”

When you learn that the newscaster you watch each evening is gay, and you recognize that you liked him or her before you knew they were gay, it can turn on that light bulb that lets you recognize that there really is no reason to hate homosexuals and hey, why shouldn’t they have the right to marry too.

“all who hate homosexuals are on the right wing”

Really? That’s an absolute you can count on? Or is that another of those liberal ‘broad brush’ things?

“They hide behind the bible to mask their hate.”

See? Again with your liberal projection. I know some who profess to ‘hate the sin, but not the sinner’. So wouldn’t that blow a hole in your argument?

          • Guest

“Hate is hate – and couching hate as being against the sin and not the sinner is bullshit. Discriminating against homosexuals “because they sin” is hate. Why else would you care if they sin – it’s them sinning, not you. What harm do they do if they sin? Sinners who gamble or cheat on their wives aren’t discriminated against. Why single out those who “sin” by being homosexual? It’s Hate.

No, ‘hating the sin” is a disingenuous form of hating the sinner.

As is the suggestion that the vast majority of those who hate homosexuals aren’t conservatives. Again, bullshit.

          • GarandFan

Well I see we just went from ALL to “vast majority”.

          • Guest

And yu wouldn’t have objected if I had originally said “vast majority”?

            Bullshit.

          • GarandFan

Probably. Because you don’t know, and I don’t know the actual numbers. Liberals, like yourself just ASSUME that “ALL” always applies.

I know “conservatives” who are okay with ‘gay marriage’. I know avowed liberals who will not talk about any ‘gay issues’ at all. They indicate no preference one way or the other, they just change the topic.

You, like other liberals immediately assume that any difference of opinion is somehow motivated by HATE. To that, I take exception.

          • Guest

” Liberals, like yourself just ASSUME that “ALL” always applies.”

            Mr Kettle meet Mr Pot.

It’s wrong for me to suggest that “all conservatives” do something… and here you are, after repeated head scratching comments where you just don’t get it, telling me that “Liberals, like yourself just ASSUME that “ALL” always applies.”

Liberals do that, eh? Wow. I had no idea liberals do everything in a block, just like conservatives.

but no, I shouldn’t suggest that conservatives “do” anything in general terms — no, no — I should first poll each and every conservative to see if it applies to them or not.

As you broad brush liberals with whatever criticism you choose.

I guess it’s sort funny the way conservative do the exact same thing liberals do, as they complain about what liberals do.

Funny in a derpy sort of way.

          • GarandFan

            “Liberals, like YOURSELF”

Once again, F- on reading comprehension. And WHO used the word “ALL”? Why Grumpy did.

Feel fee to list the reasons it’s ok to hate homosexuals — since you apparently disagree with my statement that there shouldn’t be hatred of someone just because of their sexual preference.

Go ahead, make you case as to why my statement that “there really is no reason to hate homosexuals” is wrong… cause I can’t imagine why you’d object to that statement?

          • GarandFan

Once again your reading comprehension is lacking. Where did I say “it’s okay to HATE homosexuals”?

          • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

When you took exception to the idea that any difference of opinion is motivated by hate.

I happen to agree with him, BTW – there’s no reason to hate homosexuals. But he doesn’t get the concept that indifference isn’t hate. I don’t know how to get that through to him. To him, the fact I’m even bringing up the concept is proof I hate them, and feel guilty about it.

I don’t think I’ll even try any more.

            You watch him?

            (Shrug.)

            Neilsen’s ratings service might care. I don’t.

You see, there’s something I think you miss. Indifference isn’t the same thing as hate. Not caring isn’t the same thing as hate. Looking at someone and shrugging over their sexual preferences isn’t hate.

Neither is ignoring someone who is making a major bid for attention by outing themselves, in the hope (apparently) of a ratings boost. That’s not hate.

Not caring one way or the other isn’t hate.

As Inigo Montoya says – “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

(He also says – “Hello! My name is Inigo Montoya – you killed my father, prepare to die!” – But that’s not terribly applicable here…)

No, I don’t watch CNN or Fox News.

And I didn’t challenge your decision to be neutral and indifferent.

Suggesting that there isn’t a faction of the right wing bloc that hates homosexuals is not indifference, it’s akin to standing by and watching and letting Nazis discriminate against Jews.

Not all right wingers hate homosexuals, but virtually all of those who hate homosexuals are right wingers. They pronounce their hate and hide behind the bible to justify it. Hiding behind the bible to justify hate is a distinctly right wing trait.

Denying the hate exists or pretending it isn’t a problem is certainly part of the problem…

Grumpy, you come on here constantly and accuse US of all the stuff you’re outraged (or pretend to be outraged) about. Or you seem to – maybe you’re just looking to have a place to vent about what pisses you off and it’s nothing ‘personal’ to you to throw out your insults. (If so, kindly consider starting your own blog…)

But I guarantee you that if you came up to a random stranger on the street and started ranting about how THEY were killing the planet and how THEY hated gays – you’d either get a frosty stare or a fist in the teeth, depending on how aggravating and annoying you were. (And if they were from that insane Phelps bunch, they’d probably use you in a recruitment ad.)

In addition – you might want to consider just how many people on the left are passionate supporters of homosexuals in public, but aren’t at all in private. People pay attention to the actions of the peer group they want to be in, after all. If it’s expected that they support “X” loudly and fervently, they will – whether they actually feel it or not. If they don’t feel it’s okay to be indifferent or unhappy about it then they’ll keep quiet.

Is there hate? (Shrug.) You can find hate for pretty much anything, from corned beef hash to the TSA to the KKK or the color puce. If you want to find hate, you’ll locate it by the folks spouting it.

And if they ain’t spouting it, I’m not going to accuse anyone of it. But I’m funny like that.

          • Guest

No, apparently you have a guilty conscious and feel guilty whenever I mention facts like “not all conservatives hate gays, but virtually all who hate gays are conservatives” You take offense at that statement and throw stones at me for making that statement.

If it doesn’t apply to you – note that I said “not all conservatives hate gays” — then be happy with the fact that you aren’t one of them. Why take offense at something that doesn’t apply to you?

            “Is there hate? (Shrug.)”

Come on now. Be honest instead of shrugging off reality.

Oh never mind, crawl back into your cocoon of bullshit from Fox News and right wing blogs and be happy – I don’t care, but if reality doesn’t sit well with you you might want to do something other than just shrugging and pretending hatred of homosexuals doesn’t exist on the right.

Yep. When people aren’t listening, it’s pointless to try to have any sort of conversation. I think sometimes folks argue against what *they think* someone is saying rather than what they are actually saying. So it goes.

          • ryan a

With all due respect Grumps, I think you’re either missing the point that JLawson is making, or not taking time to read what he wrote. Taking the time to consider opposing points of view often pays off. And respect goes a long way, even when there is strong disagreement. While i may not always agree with JLawson, he listens to my arguments and is always respectful. Give a little and you get a little. Something to keep in mind.

I’ll take your advice to heart. Have a pleasant fourth.

Sounds good. Happy fourth to you as well.

            Quoting JLawson — “Shrug”

            Quoting Wadney Graves — Derp!

Quoting Jim_m — “grumoy is one of those on the left who believes that the only reason for
the conservative viewpoint is greed, hate and prejudice.”

Still looking for a reasoned position – all I’m seeing is shrugs, trolls and bullshitters who are guilty of the exact same broad brush treatment of lefties that others suggest I lay on righties.

So, Ryan – - shrug, derp and oh, by the way — I’m guessing you’re just one of those haters too…

Thank you, Ryan. I think you got through where I couldn’t.

Often we get so locked into our thinking that we’re incapable of looking beyond it – and actually LISTENING to something someone on the other side of the issue is saying gets pretty darn difficult.

But if we don’t – then there’s never any chance at understanding the other point of view.

          • ryan a

            “Thank you, Ryan.”

            Anytime.

“Often we get so locked into our thinking that we’re incapable of looking beyond it – and actually LISTENING to something someone on the other side of the issue is saying gets pretty darn difficult.”

Ya, it happens. The hard part is that we are all vested in our opinions and perspectives, and sometimes it’s not easy to sit there and listen to something that we strongly disagree with. But then, without listening there’s no actual conversation–and definitely no chance to learn. Sounds kinda sappy but it’s true.

As for “grumpy,” he has his points here and there, but sometimes things tumble into a flame war so quickly that any valid points to consider go down the drain. Sometimes he starts it, sometimes he doesn’t. On this thread, he actually had a good point about the value of seeing someone on TV who is gay and who seems like a decent person–that kind of thing can change minds. At least, I think so. But whatever point he had was lost when he started down the accusation road, which only pisses people off.

“But if we don’t – then there’s never any chance at understanding the other point of view.”

            Exactly.

          • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

“On this thread, he actually had a good point about the value of seeing someone on TV who is gay and who seems like a decent person–that kind of thing can change minds.”

Very true, which is why I’m trying hard to be non-judgemental with the little guy. You teach tolerance by being tolerant, after all. I don’t make disparaging remarks about anyone – except folks who try to text and drive in stop-and-go traffic, and they’re equal-opportunity offenders. It isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary. You can’t legislate tolerance, all you can do is teach it to the kids so it’s a part of their life. But you don’t do it by pushing them to be tolerant, you can only lead them.

Sadly, it takes a lot less time to teach intolerance.

“At least, I think so. But whatever point he had was lost when he started down the accusation road, which only pisses people off.”

I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt, that he might actually want to have a conversation on stuff – but his on-line actions seem to be that of someone looking for justification of their hate. Provoke the response you want, and you can go “SEE! SEE! H8TRS!!1!”

So I don’t know if he’s arguing in good faith, or just looking to stoke his ego by fighting ‘the good fight’ against his enemy. Either way, it gets pretty tiresome.

          • ryan a

“Sadly, it takes a lot less time to teach intolerance.”

Yep. A lot less. It’s easy to basically assume that one way of thinking about the world is the only right way, and everyone else is either stupid, evil, or whatever. It’s harder to develop opinions and viewpoints while still being able to respect and communicate with people who don’t agree.

“I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt, that he might actually
want to have a conversation on stuff – but his on-line actions seem to

response you want, and you can go “SEE! SEE! H8TRS!!1″

You know, I’m not sure whether he’s looking for conversation or what. And I do think that the way he often starts off with comments pretty much sets the tone and then the rest is a predictable mess (and dumb, if you ask me). I have seen way too many threads where things head down that road. I will say that there’s a certain dynamic that goes on here, and while he often instigates, there are plenty of others who take part and instigate as well. There are some good examples of that on this very thread. As the saying goes: it takes two to tango.

“So I don’t know if he’s arguing in good faith, or just looking to stoke
his ego by fighting ‘the good fight’ against his enemy. Either way, it
            gets pretty tiresome.”

Hard to tell if he’s looking to really debate or just get into battles with “conservatives.” But I know what you mean about things getting tiresome and old. Trust me.

But in the end, tolerance, respect and actually listening go a long way. Clearly! I mean, how else could you communicate with a filthy hippie Che-Guevara worshipping socialist commie liberal pinko like me?
            ;)

Over a multi-billion dollar communications network of amazing technology using machines that it took generations of improvements and trillions of dollars get to their present state?

            Just at a guess… ;-)

            Have a good day!

So can we heterosexuals start shoving our sexuality down other people’s throats, too? Hey, does “coming out” make Cooper a better journalist? Exactly why would anyone really care if he is gay? Why can’t he, like everyone else, keep it in his bedroom where it belongs?

  • retired.military

This ranks on my list of important things and matters to me right below the fact that my sock drawer needs straightening.

I heard John Travolta is gay as well. Again I dont care.

    • http://www.shockandblog.com/ Jay McHue

You heard that about Travolta from me, didn’t you? Or you’ve been glancing at the same checkout tabloid covers I have.

You here, your queer. Shut up already.

I really don’t care that he’s gay. It has absolutely no impact on whether or not I watch his show, which I don’t.

  • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

Say, is that woman behind him on the left laughing at the idea that people would care?

  • SteveCrickmore075

All of you are pretty nonchalant now, but is a good thing that Anderson didn’t ‘come out’ during one of the Republican debates that he moderated, or he might have been booed off the stage, and not only by the audience!

    • SCSIwuzzy

      First, DERP
Second, Who in the world would come out while moderating a debate?

Filed under “when will gays realize that we actually don’t care?”

Who cares? Well, unless they happen to have influential positions in the GOP party, then the hypocrisy and discrimination is full throttle, as with Romney`s campaign’s openly gay foreign policy spokesman, Richard Grenell, who had been an indefatigable defender of Bolton as the latter’s PR flack in the Bush years, was forced to resign after harsh attacks by anti-gay conservatives.”

    • Jwb10001

Every person here is giving this a “who the hell cares” isn’t that sort the definition of tolerance? Why is it you never miss an opportunity to accuse conservatives of being intolerant, especially when you’re silent when it’s the other side (Rangle, cheap treatment of Rice, Powell, Steel and others)

      • http://wizbangblog.com/author/rodney-graves/ Rodney G. Graves

Because he’s deeply invested in the politics of identity.

Clearly there are no anti gay conservatives here. Why dont you go back to calling us all racists?

  • Wild_Willie

Being gay is so popular now, Warren in Mass. is claiming she is now a lesbian. Come on. Anderson Cooper gay! Sun come up in morning. Rain is wet. Heat is hot. CNN is bankrupt. ww

Anything to grasp at a ratings boost. Maybe now he can pull.00007% of Nielsen advertising dollars when he negotiates a contract.
