New York Mayor Bloomberg Is Making Baby Formula A Controlled Substance

New York Mayor Bloomberg’s nanny state continues unabated. Now Bloomberg, who previously decreed that large soft drinks would be banned. is going to lock up baby formula and force new mothers to plead for it and sit through breastfeeding indoctrination to get it. From Fox News:

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

Hardly anyone disagrees that breastfeeding is what new babies need, and the formula (while safe and effective) does not match breast milk in providing what babies need. Still, this is the kind of bureaucratic overreach that government control of health care famous that we are in store for.

Your future under Obamacare is playing out right in front of your eyes in New York City…

Bloomingbergs an idiot! And apparently so are most New Yorkers..

What’s next? The Government going to make sure you wipe your ass the right way and fine you when you forget to flush? Yep, I can see it coming..

Shit, they stopped smoking in NYC hospitals, too. Outrageous.

Seriously, hospitals can treat their patients in accordance with medical recommendations.

Maybe it will cut down on ghetto shoplifting of extremely expensive formula.

Breastfeeding is good for Dads too…in so many ways.

Considering I breastfeed and have to supplement with formula because of a low supply issue due to IGT, this is absolutely horrible! I do agree at least everyone should try to nurse their babies.. but there are those of us who actually do struggle with true low supply issues.. shame on you NY!

Joint Commission, the organization that accredits hospitals, wants to know how many babies are bed nothing but human milk. This is why hospitals are counting bottles. One easy way to count how much formula is used is to treat it like a medication and put it in the medication counting system.

Hospital staff have grown up in the era where free formula flowed like water; part of the reason to count bottles is to educate staff that formula is something to be used only when parents can be given an informed choice.

The public has been kept ignorant of the significant health risks (SIDS, diabetes, obesity) to infants who are not breastfed. Industry does this to make money. Giving parents information about the serious health risks to babies (and to mothers) of not breastfeeding is part of responsible health care.

I wonder how many parents would want to give their babies a substance that has a chance of making their babies sick?

Don’t confuse people here with any facts or science. It’s socialist to breast-feed, because every mother has two free teats.

I would say that my wife breastfed our son for over a year but we got a letter from obama informing us that she didn’t do that, government fed him for her.

        You’re referring to yourself perhaps?

Thanks for the explanation Nikki. I finally understand the issue.

Its for their own good, and they are too stupid to decide for themselves.

So does Mayor know Breast? Maybe he will limit formula to 16 oz too? Here’s my opinion on the matter in my blog. http://bit.ly/OCc8Sk Please feel free to leave comments.

One of life’s little liberal mysteries:

A Roman Catholic priest can’t say bupkus to a woman about birth control or contraception because he’s a MAN (and, presumably, a celibate man), but it perfectly fine, reasonable, and laudable not only for Bloomers to tell a woman how to feed her infant but also to give his opinion the weight of law.

Bloomberg needs a psychological evaluation, this looks like a god complex, he feels the need to control everyone and everything

There’s something wrong with Bloomberg. He needs a visit to the Mayo clinic for a check up from the neck up.
