Deaf Child’s Name Runs Afoul Of School District Weapons Policy

From Nebraska comes another chapter in the chronicles of zero tollerance gone overboard. From 1011now.com

Hunter Spanjer says his name with a certain special hand gesture, but at just three and a half years old, he may have to change it.

“He’s deaf, and his name sign, they say, is a violation of their weapons policy,” explained Hunter’s father, Brian Spanjer.

Grand Island’s “Weapons in Schools” Board Policy 8470 forbids “any instrument…that looks like a weapon,” But a three year-old’s hands?

“Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way,” said Hunter’s grandmother Janet Logue.

“It’s a symbol. It’s an actual sign, a registered sign, through S.E.E.,” Brian Spanjer said.

Welcome to public education in the new millennium. Check your brain and judgement at the door as they will not be needed. Maybe an adult with half a brain will fix this stupid situation by exercising a bit of common sense, but I wouldn’t bank on it. Only scornful ridicule will solve this problem…

Fight fire with fire and sue the school under disability law.

    • herddog505

Agreed, if only because thrashing the principal would make matters (perhaps) worse.

    • jim_m

Personal civil rights lawsuit on the Principal. Make these idiots pay personally for their bureaucratic stupidity.

  • 914

Any school with policy’s that idiotic cannot possibly be qualified to teach a child anything of value..

“Zero Tolerance” – the translation is “You don’t have to use your brain and THINK!” Some other lib has already done that for you. One size fits all. Get THE BOOK, look up the problem – and there’s your solution right in front of you.

And SUE THE IDIOT, not the school district.

Of course they don’t want to have to use their brains and think. Their lefties! If they thought they would be something else instead of parasitic bureaucrats.

While the bureaucrats who made this decision bear much blame, the lion’s share goes to the people who hired them and, though their elected representatives, made the rules that the bureaucrats are following. Why do we have “zero tolerance”? Because, for a long time during the ’60s and ’70, we told the bureaucrats to go easy, to give the kids second and third chances. When we saw what we were reaping from those misguided policies, i.e. schools that were more like war zones than places of education, we came up with zero tolerance.

In short, if you want to cast blame, start with We the People. We got the government we asked for… and now we’re having to live with it.

I disagree. We have zero tolerance because the left wing establishment does not want to think to distinguish right from wrong. The leftists educational establishment has been running away from any moral judgements for well over a decade.

Zero tolerance is just a way for the educational establishment to not have to make any judgements. Just like their favorite academic model is this bullshit “Outcome Based Education” model where all grades are subjective and not objective. It relieves the teachers and the schools from having to make real substantive judgements about students.

Our inner city schools are war zones in part because the families these kids come from are crap and in part because the school system doesn’t do anything to educate them beyond warehousing them 5 days a week for nine months. We don’t try to employ decent teachers because the unions forbid actually paying them better when they do a good job.

The left wing educational establishment does not want to educate kids. They want permanent jobs with no demands to actually do a good job. We are paying for a full employment plan for unions not for educating our children. We are getting exactly what we are paying for.

I don’t disagree with you that the left’s philosophy is at the bottom of our problems, but we voted to follow that philosophy. For example, how many parents, when confronted with a bad report card, stormed down to the school to DEMAND that the teacher do something about it, or, worse, that the teacher “ease up” and “stop picking on my child”? How many parents, when the principal or school board started yapping about “outcome based education”, stood up and said, “No, kids should get the grades they earn, and it should be tough to earn an ‘A’”? And when parents, outraged that some little b*stard brought a gun, a knife, drugs, etc. to school, DEMANDED “zero tolerance”?

You’re right about one thing: bureaucrats don’t think. They are like machines, and, in this case, machines that are following some pretty stupid programming. But that’s not the machine’s fault.

I suppose mentioning Geraldine Jone’s boyfriend’s name would lead to Life in Prison without parole.
