Al Jazeera Is Buying Al Gore’s Failed TV Network

Al-Jazeera-Logo

Al Gore’s TV channel, Current, is finally going under. It’s been bought by Al Jazeera. From Media Decoder:

Al Jazeera, the pan-Arab news giant, has long tried to convince Americans that it is a legitimate news organization, not a parrot of Middle Eastern propaganda or something more sinister.

It just bought itself 40 million more chances to make its case.

Al Jazeera on Wednesday announced a deal to take over Current TV, the low-rated cable chael that was founded by Al Gore, a former vice president, and his business partners seven years ago. Al Jazeera plans to shut Current and start an English-language channel, which will be available in more than 40 million homes, with newscasts emanating from both New York and Doha, Qatar.

For Al Jazeera, which is financed by the government of Qatar, the acquisition is a coming of age moment. A decade ago, Al Jazeera’s flagship Arabic-language channel was reviled by American politicians for showing videotapes from Al Qaeda members and sympathizers. Now the news operation is buying an American channel, having convinced Mr. Gore and the other owners of Current that it has the journalistic muscle and the money to compete head-to-head with CNN and other news channels in the United States.

Of course it’s not the same jihad-loving news channel when it’s shown in English…

From left wing anti-American programming to islamic anti-American programming. Somehow I doubt anyone will notice the difference. Although I’d bet that Al Jazeera gets better ratings.

Air America… Current TV… when will liberals learn that no one wants to hear their b.s.?

    • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

Their trouble is that they’re so convinced they’re right that the possibility they’re not doesn’t even register.

      No one except voters.

Really? Now you’re channeling Mr. I-Didn’t-Want-To-Be-President-Anyway?

          • http://opinion.ak4mc.us/ McGehee

And you’re conflating TV channel viewership with election results. That’s — oh, what’s the word? Oh yeah: stupid.

          • TomInCali

Well, I could make some snarky comment about how liberals are too busy living their lives to have time to tune into an echo chamber. But I don’t really care if viewership goes to zero, as long as people keep voting the right way. As people on here are fond of saying, election results are the only measurements that count.

Al Jazeera English has excellent documentaries. I’ve seen some documentaries on it which could have been produced by the US State Department, they were so pro-American.

This was a good way to get around the informal censorship, just buying the channel they could got get otherwise.

Still, they are owned by the government of Qatar, which has been active in overthrowing Qaddafi and now Assad, so the channel undoubtedly has an agenda. On the surface, it’s just liberal globalist. Not much different from CNN International (CNN USA concentrates on car chases and celebrity news).

Now let’s hear from all of you who have never watched a minute of AJE programming. Rant and rave.

    • herddog505

I’ve never read Pravda or Der Sturmer, either. Ditto Protocols of the Elders of Zion or Mein Kampf. I also haven’t drunk bleach, hit myself with an axe, or tried crack.

There are some things that one can learn aren’t… um… worth his time trying without finding out at first hand.

As for their great documentaries, I also don’t read Playboy for the articles.

      • Commander_Chico

So someone told you AJE was like those other things, so you won’t watch. O-tay.

Grover Norquist was on AJE last night but of course he’s a stealth agent of jihad according to some.

As I said, go ahead and rant and rave away from a position of utter ignorance.

        • Vagabond661

Oh, rant and rave in ignorance like the left when they talk about Rush? Or Sean? Or Mike? Or Mark?

        • herddog505

And somebody else has told me that it ISN’T like those things.

          Who to believe?

If I want to read / watch anti-American and anti-Semitic material, I’ve already got plenty of sources.

          • Commander_Chico

I usually check things, places and people out for myself instead of having someone else tell me what to think. Suum quique.

          • http://wizbangblog.com/author/rodney-graves/ Rodney G. Graves

chicka chief among them (at least hereabouts).

    • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

I might watch them sometime, to see what it’s like. But I’ve got to be honest, TV just isn’t much of a priority any more.

      • Commander_Chico

TV’s just background for me in my hotel rooms.

    • jim_m

Not much different from CNN International

Now there’s a ringing endorsement. Not much different from an organization that admitted to running propaganda from Saddam Hussein.

I will agree with you that there is not much difference. But I believe that you think the similarity is a good thing, whereas I do not.

  • ackwired

So is the channel “going under” or has it been sold? Apparently it has a large enough following to be marketable. If is is being sold at a significant loss, then we could say that it is a failed experiment. But to say that it is going under and being sold is a little hard to rationalize.

    • http://www.rustedsky.net JLawson

I don’t think it’d be the first time a group of investors or a business bought another one that was failing. Al J obviously sees some value in this – and Al Gore looking at a $100 million payout is like Michael Moore looking at a Philly cheesesteak. Don’t get between the two, or you’ll get flattened…

Companies facing bankruptcy will sell off their assets. That is what Current is doing. It is going under. To avoid the final fall it is selling off its assets to Al Jazeera. Al Jazeera gets the infrastructure and it gets the cable access that Current already has, which means that Al Jazeera does not have to negotiate to have carriers pick it up.

      • Evil Otto

Heh, minus Time Warner, which just announced it was dropping Current. Apparently, they didn’t like the sale going on behind their backs.

  • Oysteria

I have to pass CurrentTV while scrolling up and down to the channels I like. Right after the Newtown shootings, they played Bowling for Columbine over and over. Classless. The rest of the programming wasn’t any better. Anything’s an improvement.

    • http://opinion.ak4mc.us/ McGehee

I have one of those new TiVos that the cable company puts a CableCard in to serve as the digital/HD decoder, and TiVo lets me pick and choose which channels appear on my channel list. For however long my cable company carried Current, it only appeared on my channel list long enough to be unselected.

  • Wild_Willie

There won’t be any changing of the programming then. There is little difference between the two. ww

Al Gore finally discovers capitalism….by selling a failed business for a handsome profit.
