Ex-Burglars Admit Gun Owner-Outing Map Helps Criminals

Fox News recently reported that ex-crooks are denouncing the New York paper that published the names and addresses of thousands of the state’s gun owners saying that publishing the information was nothing less than a road map for criminals planning home invasions and burglaries.

In the last half of December, the Journal News a small paper in suburban Westchester, New York, published an interactive map featuring the names and addresses of the gun owners in Rockland County. This information, the ex-burglars say, presents criminals with a ready list of easy targets.

“That was the most asinine article I’ve ever seen,” said Walter T. Shaw, 65, a former burglar and jewel thief who the FBI blames for more than 3,000 break-ins that netted some $70 million in the 1960s and 1970s. “Having a list of who has a gun is like gold – why rob that house when you can hit the one next door, where there are no guns?

“What they did was insanity,” added Shaw, author of “License to Steal,” a book about his criminal career.

The map of gun owners’ homes also gives those crooks specifically interested in stealing guns a roadmap for their criminal enterprises.

After all, it is not legal, law-abiding gun owners, but criminals using stolen or illegal weapons that perpetrate crimes. And here the paper has given a ready-made list to those who might want to find guns that can’t be traced back to the criminals through legal records.

“That’s one of the first things we’d check out — guns are on the top of the list of what you want to steal,” another former thief told Fox News. “They can walk out with a shotgun and a couple of handguns and sell them on the street for $300 or $400 a pop. They can sell them to a gangbanger who ends up killing someone.”

Regardless of the danger the Journal News brought to its community, it has promised to try and print the names and addresses of even more legal gun owners.

The paper targeted nearby Putnam County but officials there have refused to release the information.

  • Unintended consequences. Who could EVER have forseen criminals using the anti-gun agenda to their advantage?

  • herddog505

I wonder: if somebody on that list has their house robbed, is it possible to sue the paper?

    • Conservachef

They’d have to get the crook to admit that their house was targeted because of that map, I think. Even then, the paper would argue that it’s public information.

However, if the crook admitted using the map, I’d certainly be talking to a lawyer…

      • herddog505

I wonder what the paper’s attitude would be if the names and personal info of women with restraining orders was published, and one of them was attacked? Or if somebody published a hand-dandy, interactive map of all the [insert favored lefty victim group] living in a given area?

These people are beneath contempt. As I’ve written before, they seem to have no idea what they are doing or how damned dangerous it is. I don’t think it’s an exageration to call their actions nazi tactics.

        • jim_m

Actually, some of the names and addresses published have been people who do have restraining orders. It was a statistical inevitability that the paper never considered or perhaps simply didn’t care about.

          • herddog505

            Look, these are liberals:

Why can’t it be BOTH stupidity and lack of concern?

        • Conservachef

We’ve already seen the paper’s attitude, since the names/addresses of the employees were posted. Lots of whining and increased security at the office (guns to protect me, but not thee!).

  • GarandFan

Because of threats, the same newspaper is has now hired ARMED security guards.

When criminals cheer the decisions of the left, it makes you wonder who are the left really trying to help? Is it promoting anarchy?

    • They’re just looking for love in all the wrong places…

Seriously – I think they’re the political equivalent of the teenage girl who looks at the ‘rebellious’ guys and starts getting moist in the nether regions at the thought of being liked by them. The badder they are, the more their approval is cherished.

      • Vagabond661

The feel good 60’s leftover democrats no doubt feel what you are talking about. However they are being used by the socialist trying to fundamentally transform this nation.

If you are looking to change a way of life, you have to disrupt the status quo.

        • Gullible saps, marks, useful idiots – you pick the term.

And the thinking of those looking to change our way of life…

          1. Break what exists, by any means necessary
          2. Magically – without any effort at all – something to their liking will appear
          3. Everyone will be happy!

Except it sure seems like step 2 never happens.
