Mallory Hagen was crowned Miss America last week. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, but was born in Tennessee and raised in Alabama. Apparently that ties her to segregation and Jim Crow laws. At least that’s what Blain Robert, an assistant professor of history at California State University, Fresno writing in The New York Times would have you believe.
According to Robert there was some grand conspiracy in the South to win beauty pageants to combat bad publicity in the 50′s and 60′s and/or to secretly send coded racist messages to the rest of the country.
