Mallory Hagen Winnning Miss America Apparently Means The South Will Rise Again

Mallory Hagen was crowned Miss America last week. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, but was born in Tennessee and raised in Alabama. Apparently that ties her to segregation and Jim Crow laws. At least that’s what Blain Robert, an assistant professor of history at California State University, Fresno writing in The New York Times would have you believe.

According to Robert there was some grand conspiracy in the South to win beauty pageants to combat bad publicity in the 50’s and 60’s and/or to secretly send coded racist messages to the rest of the country.

    My south is rising.

Not only did Ms Roberts manage to smear the entire institution of the Miss America Pageant as racist but every white person from today’s south as well. Her article drips with resentment toward southern whites and decries any suggestion that anyone from the south could have any redeeming character traits what-so-ever.

Ms Roberts also manages to plug her new book (which is obviously the reason for this little essay).

I do have to say that if her book is as poorly written as this editorial it will not do very well. What exactly does she mean when she says that “the fortunes of Southern contestants rose precipitously“? Is English perhaps not her first language? One would think that a PhD university professor would at least be able to write coherently, then again I suppose that this is what passes for intelligence on the left these days.

I’ve heard that phrase used before. Is there something wrong with it?

BTW, for once I agree with the “Your race card is overdrawn” sentiment I so often see on Wizbang. This prof’s article is silly, useless, and boring, too.

I’ve seen the phrase used that way before too, but it is inappropriate. Precipitous comes from precipitate and precipice. The general connotation is a falling object, not a rising one.

The whole race card thing is so overdone that you are correct in that it has become trite and dull.

        • Brucehenry

You know, come to think of it, I think now I’ve only heard about someone’s fortunes FALLING precipitously. So, yeah, you’re absolutely right. One’s fortunes rise “dramatically.”

Bruce agrees with Jim. Watch out the Mayan doomsday is approaching.

          • jim_m

No doomsday. Ace has explained it all. The calendar is 300 years off.

The Times article is what we get when liberal guilt, white privilege propaganda, and critical race theory are combined. Throw in a touch of abject jealousy and we have Blain Roberts.

The saddest part of it all? She teaches our children.

I have to admit she is sending a message to me. I’m not sure how coded it is or if you need a secret decoder ring to receive the message, but there is certainly a message being sent and received.

    • herddog505

My message to her is, “Eat a damned sandwich.”

  • JWH

It’s possible to read a bit too much into these pageants.

Honestly, I find them outdated and a little dull.

I don’t know about the South rising again. But, something in me rised again when I saw her photo. But, I am very proud of the South Carolina branch of our family and their military contribution to this great country.

  • The_Queen_of_France

The message I received from that article was that PhD really does stand for “Piled Higher and Deeper.”

  • MartinLandauCalrissian

I don’t fault the halfwits at our universities for acting like such idiots. I fault taxpayers for continuing to allow their tax dollars go to pay these idiots.

I don’t watch these things, but that is one gorgeous young lady. Don’t know who/what Blain is either – were the judges supposed to have a write in vote for Michelle Obama?
