Soliciting Prostitution At A Police Station Is Almost Always A Bad Idea

Unless you are a working girl in a town with a totally corrupt police department, meeting a “john” at a police station is going to turn out poorly. Such is the case for Portland, Oregon prostitute Christal Smith. From KATU:

An undercover street crimes detective had been communicating with a woman online through an internet site, by phone and by text message for a couple of days, police said. The communications consisted of negotiations for sexual activity in exchange for money.

On January 11, the suspect agreed to come to Salem from Portland in order to perform sexual acts in exchange for money, and she was directed to an unmarked door of the Salem Police Department, police said.

The suspect followed the directions to the door and attempted to make contact with who she believed was a “John” at that location. Instead, she was contacted by detectives and taken into custody without incident.

Police identified the woman as Christal D. Smith, 20, of Portland. She was taken into custody and booked into the Marion County Jail on charges of prostitution and promoting prostitution.

In order to get to the door where she was arrested, the suspect walked through a courtyard where the clearly marked public entrance to the Salem Police Department is located, police said. She also walked passed several uniformed police officers.

Obviously her customers aren’t paying her for her brains…

I am relieved that the citizens of Salem, Oregon will no longer face the extreme danger posed by Cristal Smith.

The Salem police are focusing on the right things, sitting at a computer, trolling for whores on the internet. Otherwise they’d be wasting their time out on the street looking out for armed robbers, burglars, and rapists.

Look on the bright side: once they get all the dangerous assault hookers off the streets (For the Children(TM)), they can then redirect their efforts against smokers, the obese, and motorcyclists who don’t wear helmets. They might even go after the REAL villains: people who put recyclables in the regular trash.

      • Commander_Chico

If anyone of those things require work, cops will avoid doing it. Since fat asses and smokers are in poor shape on average and thus pose less risk, they might be easier for cops to bother.

Not to mention drugs. Meth is pretty good problem in that city according to the news reports.

If a Portland-based hooker is willing to walk past uniformed officers and into the side door of a police station maybe Internal Affairs in Portland should do a little investigation of their own?

Do you think she was wearing a sign they neglected to read? Or do you think you can spot a sex worker at 20 paces? What gives it away? The thigh-high patent leather boots? The nipples showing through a weather-inappropriate sheer blouse? Or do you have some kind of ho-dar that tells you who is and isn’t a whore?

      • UOG

I’m having difficulty understanding the context of your response to my statement (about the possibility that Internal Affairs in Portland, OR might perhaps want to look into conduct in Portland – based on the behavior of a Portland-based hooker while visiting Salem, OR). If you could expand a bit upon your initial comment, flesh out your context a little more it might help.

BTW, as we haven’t exchanged comments before and your screen identity is new at least to me, Hi.

        • Josephine Violet

Misunderstood the post…thought you were saying Salem cops should have “spotted” her, but after a re-read, you have my apologies.

    That’s a hard 20!

After the initial “she committed a crime at a police station!” giggles wear off, there’s something very sad about this story. A 20-year-old prostitute? How did she land there? Why is she doing it? And the saddest part is that she gets arrested, gets booked … and she’ll probably just go back to the sex trade. Has any attempt been made to help her if she needs it?

I know that you can’t help everybody. I know that the Salem police force doesn’t have “save every prostitute who walks through the door” as its mission statement. But that doesn’t mean nobody should try..

Despite that, the article’s coda is almost ironic:

Police urged anyone caught up in prostitution to seek help. The Northwest Human Services Crisis and Information Hotline is available 24-hours day at 1-800-560-5535 and the Mid-Valley Women’s Crisis Service can be reached at their 24-hour crisis line at 503-399-7722.
The Salem Police Department urges anyone who seeks assistance getting out of prostitution or who knows of anyone who needs assistance to contact their local service providers or call 911.

Isn’t there some tension between “police lay trap for prostitute, arrest her” and “prostitutes should get help, police say?”

      100% agree.

Not that I’d want any daughter / sister / friend / third cousin twice removed of mine to work in the sex trade, it makes financial sense for uneducated / half-bright women who would otherwise struggle in a McJob or else work for the government.

      • Josephine Violet

Many highly educated women chose sex work. Many smart ladies that need flexible but high paying work chose sex work while they go to school. There are certainly plenty of women who chose the work because they feel they don’t have other alternatives, but if choosing sex work over McD’s makes you half-smart in your eyes, then perhaps you need a new prescription…what makes more sense…working the hours you select for a significantly-higher-than-average hourly wage, enabling you to be a good parent/partner/caregiver/student, or working 2 minimum wage jobs and letting someone else raise your kids/care for your parents or give up your dreams of a better life through education?

        • herddog505

Without plumping for women to… um… enter that line of work, I think we agree: there is a financial argument to be made in favor of it, ESPECIALLY for uneducated or half- bright women.

Herd … a few years ago, I would have been aboard with that. But I’ve done a little too much research on human trafficking to be as sanguine about it as you are. There’s some material in there that will make your hair stand on end.

Not everybody in the marketplace is an enlightened actor will full access to information and options.

        • herddog505

There is something in what you say. Any time there is prostitution, the possibility of associated crimes – drug abuse, trafficking, “rolling” the johns – is present.

On the other hand, if we treated it less like a crime and more like a business, the girls would be less likely to be victimized.

          • JWH

Herd, I have long wanted something similar. Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it. I would prefer to have that sort of trade out in the open (so to speak) rather than in the shadows.

    • Josephine Violet

You said “if she needs it” and then went on assuming she does. At 20 most people would consider a woman to be fully capable of deciding to join combat forces in Afghanistan, to work at McD’s for minimum wage, or to chose to raise a child. Why is she incapable of choosing sex work? The media would love to have you believe all sex workers are victims, but that only feeds the coffers of religious groups and justifies big budgets for vice departments. The vast majority of sex work is consenting adults connecting with other consenting adults.

  • GarandFan

Not to worry. Some wonderful progressive legislator in Oregon wants a law requiring that cigarettes be available only by a doctor’s prescription – violators will serve prison time. Must have a lot of open beds in their state facilities. What’s next? Sugary soft drinks? Alcoholic beverages?

  • Joe Lagle

OMG i agreed with Chico again…. the world MUST be coming to an end!

Maybe the prostitute was looking for Officer Mahoney.
(If you have ever watched the movie “Police Academy”, then you will know who I’m talking about.)

      LOL!
