NYPD Chief, “The Problem Is The Handgun”

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly is in favor of getting AK-47’s and AR-15’s off of the streets, but he knows that they’re not the real problem. From The New York Post:

The nation’s looming assault-weapons ban is plain common sense, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said yesterday — but the city’s real enemy is illegal handguns.

“For us in New York City, and I believe in most urban centers throughout America, the problem really is concealable handguns,” Kelly said.

The city’s top cop made the remark on CBS’s “Face the Nation” during a discussion on Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s pending legislation to severely tighten restrictions on military-style firearms and high-capacity ammunition clips.

“We don’t want them on the streets, make no mistake about it,” Kelly said, referring to AK-47s and AR-15s, such as the one used in the Newtown, Conn., elementary-school massacre. “But the problem is the handgun.”

Handguns account for nearly all murders by firearm in New York City and state, data show. An analysis by the NYPD determined that assault weapons were used in just three of the 1,400 instances of gunplay in the city last year.

The problem for potential gun grabbers is that the Supreme Court was pretty clear in their Heller decision about the right of citizens to own handguns for use in protecting themselves, free from excessive regulation that attempts to limit a citizen’s right to own and use a weapon.

Another #$%& liberal idiot with his finger on the trigger. For some reason, libs love posing with the guns they ‘hate’ so much.

    • Conservachef

“I don’t have to bother with proper handling. Obviously the gun is unloaded- nobody in their right mind would let me hold a loaded one!”

      • MartinLandauCalrissian

More like, “I am a liberal so no violation of safety… or laws…. or taste and good sense will be held against me.”

        • Conservachef

          Or logic…

…. For some reason, libs love posing with the guns they ‘hate’ so much ….

They don’t hate them so much as they fear themselves. Unable to contemplate their own lawful and benign gun ownership, “liberals” = socialists = fascists = communists all project on to those of us who are Right their own envy-rage-and hatred-driven fears of their own inability to restrain their every desire. Including – on any given bad hair day (Hitlery Janet Reno Billy-Bubbah Blythe, eg) to mass murder.

    From the article:

The biggest obstacle in stemming the flow of the illegal weapons — both
assault rifles and handguns — is the less restrictive laws in other
    locales, Kelly said.

Yeah. If everyone else would just ban all the guns like we have, then that would fix our problem!

Another point of humor in the article- citing “centrist advocacy group” Third Way. Wiki says TW is stocked with current & former Dems, progressives, and Obama toadies.

So, a photo-op either before or after he makes the point that, “…the problem really is concealable handguns.” Ok, concealable handguns. Then what’s the point in his holding that particular revolver?

More evidence that they’re just going after anything that looks “scary” to them.

    • LiberalNightmare

They are going after whatever they can get.

This time its ‘assault rifles’, next times it handguns, after that hunting rifles.
Repeat as needed until they have finally taken all weapons.

The plan here is to remove weapons entirely, underestimating the gameplan because a few of the actors are stupid is a mistake.

This propaganda photo op reminds me of another disturbing photo op. “Can I get me a hunting license here?”

    • MartinLandauCalrissian

Ah, the haughty John Kerry, right?

  • RichFader

Ray, you guys have had the largest, best-equipped municipal police force in the country, as well as the toughest handgun regulations in the country, for decades. And people still keep getting popped on your streets. *Your* streets. You don’t get to say it’s other cities’ and states’ fault.

“The nation’s looming assault-weapons ban is plain common sense,”

    What looming assault ban??
If the republicans cave on this issue they can kiss the house and the senate goodbye in 2014 and they know it. It is political suicide for republicans (and half the dems) to vote for this.

  • MunDane68

Wait…I thought the Newton guns were two hanguns…not AR-15s or AK-47s…

  • Brian_R_Allen

…. NYPD determined that assailant weapons were used in just three of the 1,400 instances of gun violence in the city last year….

Assailants, on the other hand, were the perpetrators of all 1400 instances.

Ah, Ray finally found a way to make himself feel secure in the size of his penis…

Personally, I’m a big fan of just banning bad things. Remember when we made weed, crack and heroin illegal? That solved everything. Now it’s impossible to get any of those things.
