Obama Loves Skeet Shooting? Not Likely!

Many received with raised eyebrow President Obama’s recent claim that he goes skeet shooting at Camp David “all the time.” But until Fox News’ Jana Winter looked into it, few in the media seemed much interested in trying to verify Obama’s startling claim. Maybe it’s because Obama’s claim is as absurd as it first seemed.

In a recent interview the President gave to the left-leaning New Republic, he tried to blow off as unfounded any criticism over his new anti-Second Amendment crusade. “Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time,” he assured the magazine.

As soon as Obama’s skeet shooting claim was revealed people have scoffed at the claim. The question becomes, how does one prove that Obama is not just spinning a tall tale here?

One way would be to discover photographic evidence to buttress the President’s claim. But the problem is there isn’t any.

The President is followed around night and day by a retinue of official photographers led by chief White House photographer Pete Souzza. Nearly every waking hour of the President’s life is captured inside the lens of Souzza and his team. So, if Obama does this “all the time” there should be many photos of a grinning Obama happily blowing away airborne clay discs at the famed presidential retreat.

If Obama had been at this little Camp David pastime so often, surely there would be a lot of photos showing it. But there aren’t any.

This made Jana Winter curious and so she went looking for any eyewitnesses that could corroborate Obama’s claim. Winter did find some people that admitted that Obama had once been skeet shooting at Camp David, but was told that the President couldn’t get away from it fast enough.

Winter’s eyewitness told her that, “The only time he shot skeet was for President’s Cup [a presidential Marine guards competition]. I was there. He stayed for about five minutes, and couldn’t leave fast enough.”

Winter went on to report that her source told her skeet shooting is “very hard. Especially for someone not used to guns.” Amusingly, the source also said the President “couldn’t have been more uncomfortable.”

But perhaps we all took Obama’s interview too expansively. Perhaps the President had given us a more Clintonian “it depends on what ‘is’ is” line.

After all, John Hayward pointed out that Obama didn’t exactly say he was the one doing the skeet shooting. As Hayward says, Obama could easily say he was only making the statement that skeet shooting was indulged by visitors to the presidential retreat. “We do skeet shooting all the time” could be parsed to mean a “we” that encompasses all those at Camp David, not necessarily just him. A sort of royal we, if you will.

One amusing aspect of this tale was when The New Republic pushed out a photo it claimed showed the President in the act enjoying some Camp David skeet shooting. The magazine was later embarrassed to discover it was a faked image and quickly deleted any reference to it.

Regardless, it all appears more like Obama perpetrated a blatant pander based on a very slim thread of truth with this skeet shooting tale.

**UPDATE Feb. 2, 2013**

The White House finally posted one photograph of Obama shooting a gun. The photo is a waist up shot of the president shooting an over and under (with a back drop of trees). Still, they finally posted a photo of him shooting a shotgun. The photo was uploaded Feb. 1, 2013, after, we might note, all the uproar. So, when this photo was shot is anyone’s guess though the caption says, “President Barack Obama shoots clay targets on the range at Camp David, Md., Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012. (Official White Photo by Pete Souza).” The photo is labeled as upload# “P080412PS-0464 by The White House.”

Yeah. Sort of like We be the Predident.

Yup, that would be the “imperial” we.

You have to know what the meaning of the word WE is.

FF: Have you ever fired a gun?

Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time.

Yeah, sometimes I do scuba diving too.

I’m well known for mountain climbing. I’ve climbed every peak in Illinois.

Really? What a coincidence! I’ve climbed every mountain in Florida. The Disney people arrested me for climbing Space Mountain, though. Bastards.

It just goes to show, there’s no line of bullshit uttered by Obama that’s phantasmagorical enough the press won’t lap it up like a dog on a pile of its own puke.

That’s that sad – frightening, really – part. I don’t expect MiniTru to treat Barry or Uncle Choo-choo or the rest of their gang like a DA questioning a suspected criminal (you know: like they did Bush, Cheney, Rummy, et al), but it WOULD be nice to see “journalists” behave with at least some suspicion and not spend their time covering for democrats.

Here’s the famous Glenn Kessler, he of The Fact Checker, the skeptical, professional, unbiased, neutral journalist who can hang five Pinocchios on a Republican faster than you can say “partisan hack”:

We live in suspicious times and the president lives in a media fishbowl. That’s the way it is. In the meantime, we do not have enough information to make a ruling one way or the other. We are eager to see a photograph, or hear from someone who saw him at the skeet range, to put this matter to rest.

In other words, Barry made a statement that defies credibility (and, to do him credit, Kessler spends quite a few column inches explaining WHY the idea of Barry skeet shooting “all the time” is incredible), but finished up with the weak claim that, “Aw, gosh. We don’t KNOW what the truth is, so – dang it! – we’ll just have to let the matter rest. But if somebody – ANYBODY – can give us a pic… Doesn’t SOMEBODY have a pic? For the love of pete, can’t ANYBODY give us a hook to show that Barry is telling the truth? A pic of him LOOKING at a gun – pistol, rifle, BB gun, it doesn’t matter – will do. C’mon: help a guy out here.”

    “Obama perpetrated a blatant pander”
But..but..but he’s so good at it!

“Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time,”
I’ve never heard anyone who indulges in this sport refer to it as “we do skeet shooting”. It’s “we shoot skeet”. Using the vernacular would imply familiarity with the sport.

But then, this is the same guy who used the term “corpseman” when referring to a corpsman.

  • Vagabond661

Obama is left handed? I didn’t know.

The official photograph appears to be target shooting. Skeets are launched airborne so the gun would have more up an upward angle.

Geez was that headline a lie, or what. The New Yorker writes: “Gun Sales Soar on Photo of Armed Obama.”

Um, the photo was published Friday afternoon and the New Yorker piece was posted on Sat. Do you think they really got proof that gun sales “soared” in a 24 hour period after the photo was released? Liars. Total lies. Is that supposed to be satire?

      • Brucehenry

Ummm, yes, Genius, it was supposed to be satire. Sheesh.

        • herddog505

Then I’d say that it’s pretty poor satire, though I’ll give the author credit: he didn’t play the race card and write that sight of a “black man with a gun” was setting off the buying frenzy.

On the other hand, I suppose that we should take some solace from the fact that the gun buying frenzy has struggled onto the lefty elite’s radar to the extent that feel the need to make fun of it.

          • Brucehenry

            I’m a little surprised, Herd.

One, at your not appreciating a clever joke, or seeing its satiric value.

Two, at not getting that poking fun of certain folks having an unreasoning fear of “a black man with a gun” was EXACTLY the point.

And three, the left has been making fun of the gun-buying frenzy since 2008, when it began. Sometime in early November. Check Stewart’s and Colbert’s archives, as well as this Borowitz guy’s.

          • herddog505

I guess it just went sailing right over my head.

Well, IF it was satire (and there is no way to tell) it fits 100% perfectly with the lies that liberals tell on a daily basis…. so it was impossible to tell that post from any other lie-filled liberal post.

          • Brucehenry

Well, I’m not claiming Borowitz = Swift, but some leading intellectual lights of his day failed to see the satire in “A Modest Proposal,” so there’s that.

I get “The Borowitz Report” every day in my inbox. Some days it’s funnier than other days.

The actual photo is interesting as it looks posed even to someone like me who does not know much about guns. The way he is holding the gun somehow looks wrong. Perhaps someone who actually shoots can comment. It seems like the Dukakis picture in the tank.
