#BENGHAZI: Absentee President When Four Americans Died

From The Weekly Standard:

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testified this morning on Capitol Hill that President Barack Obama was absent the night four Americans were murdered in Benghazi on September 11, 2012:

Panetta said, though he did meet with Obama at a 5 o’clock prescheduled gathering, the president left operational details, including knowledge of what resources were available to help the Americans under siege, “up to us.”

In fact, Panetta says that the night of 9/11, he did not communicate with a single person at the White House. The attack resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama did not call or communicate in anyway with the defense secretary that night. There were no calls about what was going on in Benghazi. He never called to check-in.

The 5 o’clock meeting was a pre-scheduled 30-minute session, where, according to Panetta’s recollection, they spent about 20 minutes talking a lot about the American embassy that was surrounded in Egypt and the situation that was just unfolding in Benghazi.

Un-freaking-believeable.  Read the whole thing.

Obama voted present on Benghazi. He chatted with Israel on the phone but wasn’t involved at all in the siege occurring at our Consulate that resulted in the death of four Americans. Small wonder there are no situation room photo ops being paraded around by the White House… HE WASN’T EVEN THERE. Dereliction of duty doesn’t even cover it. That means the story he just went to bed is true? Well, after chatting with Israel, of course. My God.  (Read: Obama Knew About Benghazi Terror Attacks 90 Minutes After They Began… Went to Bed (Video) )

Add another set of lies to the Benghazi pile:

Well, ya see, Barry was busy upstairs with Valarie Jarrett, figuring out how to spin the whole thing. Besides, he needed his beauty sleep before going to Vegas and hit up some donors.

    “What difference does it make?”

Had he been awake he would have refused any help anyway. When the call comes at 2AM the phone is off the hook in Barry’s WH.

Barry gets paid millions of dollars a year. More millions in vacations and daily golf lessons then as an emergency arises, at the pivotal moment what does he do?

    He goes to bed…

I’d say that’s grounds for termination right there and then.

    Our aloof President.

  • Commander_Chico

Nakoula’s still in prison? Good, maybe he’ll fess up about where his money came from. Plus people will be safe from his scams.

    • herddog505

Do you realize how you come across when you write things like this? Four Americans are dead, the consulate burnt, we find out (contra lefty talking points for the past several months) that Barry just sort of stood back and let it happen, and you’re STILL beating the “it was TEH JOOOOOOOOS!” drum???

      • Jwb10001

I think he’s off his meds

It’s a joke that this small time scammer and drug dealer becomes a victim, hero and cause celebre for right-wingers because he was involved in this shadowy video.

I’ve gone over the EUCOM/AFRICOM order of battle and the timeline enough in these discussions; they alerted and mobilized forces for movement, but ran out of time. Bad shit happens in the world, even the USA with its global military forces can only do what it can.

Stevens should have had more security (in 20/20 hindsight), but there is always a balance between security and actually being able to get out and do diplomacy. Too many US embassies look like bunkers and prisons as it is.

The president does not stay up for every firefight in Afghanistan, either, and lots more Americans are being killed there.

        • It’s a joke he was blamed for it by people desperate to point the finger in ANY direction but themselves.

“Stevens should have had more security (in 20/20 hindsight), but there is always a balance between security and actually being able to get out and do diplomacy. Too many US embassies look like bunkers and prisons as it is.”

In the middle of a war zone – I’d find it acceptable that the Embassy look like a safe place. Visibly safe. Massive amounts of concrete, rebar, sandbags and Marines locked and loaded safe. And apparently the Ambassador himself had some serious concerns, so he didn’t apparently much care how the Embassy looked – he was worried about whether it was safe.

          And it wasn’t.

When your own ambassador is requesting more security – wouldn’t you think that’d be a red flag that while the shit hadn’t hit the fan yet, it was just a matter of time before it did?

        • Jwb10001

Who besides you brought this guy up? Who is making him out to be a hero? It seems to me this discussion is about your hero Obama and his utter failure on this matter, as well as the resulting cover up. Additionally it should be pointed out that not only did Obama fail the mission here he’s a chickenhawk of the first order.

          • Commander_Chico

You did not note Lady Liberty’s whining about Nakoula being in custody and the picture of him being arrested – for parole violations from his fraud and drug convictions.

          • Jwb10001

So you think this guy isn’t the scapegoat, great. Now that we’ve dealt with your distraction please enlighten us on how well Obama has performed on this. Or are you just going to accuse me of being a chickenhawk warmonger?

        • fustian24

I hold no brief for this Nakoula idiot, but if you think his highly publicized arrest was not politically motivated, you’re on crack.

  • 914

How can Panetta sit there and tell us that the commander in chief was AWOL in concerns to his responsibilty in Benghazi?

    Oh, yeah. He’s under oath.

  • herddog505

Remember when it was a national outrage that Bush spent a few minutes finishing the book he was reading to a classroom of small children before rushing off to Air Force One on the morning of 9-11?

    Yeah, so do I.

    Let’s recap, shall we?

Barry, for reasons that are still unexplained, attacks Libya and deposes GoDaffy. He doesn’t even bother to tell the Congress, much less get their approval. In due course, GoDaffy falls and is murdered by his own people (no tears for him). We quickly get information that AQ and its affiliates, who had been suppressed in Libya by GoDaffy, are moving in and getting all the weapons that were left lying around. Less than a year later, the US ambassador explicitly warns his superiors at State that he believes that he and his mission are being targetted by AQ and their affiliates (with the help of the local “security” forces recruited to defend the embassy and consulate) and that he needs extra security. Within a few weeks, he and three other Americans are dead, killed in a coordinated attack on the consulate in Benghazi. His only security was a pair of former SEALs who happened to be on the site.

    Hillary ignored him.

    Panetta ignored him.

    Barry ignored him.

Lefties who continue to insist that BUSH KNEW! about 9-11 are perfectly fine with this. Nothing to see here. Move along. What difference does it make?

What do you suppose they’re making of this in Moscow, Beijing, Pyongyang, and Tehran? I know what I’d be thinking: time to run the boards on this clown, because he won’t do anything even if he bothers to find out that anything is going on. O’ course, a couple of more years of his fiscal mismanagement and the US won’t have a military CAPABLE of doing anything.

Jebus, what a feckless, worthless, self-aggrandizing, lazy son of a bitch we’ve got in the White House, surrounded by hacks and incompetents. God help our country.

    Oh, and one last thing:

I thought that Barry ASSURED us that we’d find out who did it and even the score. Any news on that? It just occurs to me that OJ swore he’d find the real culprits, but also spent a lot of time on the golf course.

    • fustian24

I think it’s also interesting that there were a whole lot of people from that complex that survived. We have not been told of a single one of them. No interviews, no information, no nothing.

      Where is “our” press?

  • Paul Hooson

One problem here is pretty apparent here. Documented terrorist attacks have taken place during every president’s administration since the 1800’s, if not even longer. And terrorists use the elements of surprise to carry out their brand of evil with no prior notice that they will strike.

John Wilkes Booth certainly didn’t contact Abraham Lincoln ahead of time that he was going to kill him in the Ford Theater as a form of terrorism. In 1910, an individual angry at THE LOS ANGELES TIMES killed 21 and injured another 100 persons. In 1920, a bombing on Wall Street killed 38 and wounded 300. From 1940-56, ” The Mad Bomber” placed bombs in theaters and other public places for years, killing and wounding many in 30 incidents. In 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald used the element of surprise to fatally wound President Kennedy during a peaceful parade in Dallas. A marine barracks was attacked in Lebanon during the Reagan Administration in 1983, leaving 243 marines dead. The USS Cole was attacked late in the Clinton Administration leaving 17 American sailors dead and 39 wounded. Al Qaida agents attacked the World Trade Center buildings and the Pentagon on Sep 11, 2001, killing 2996 and wounding 6000 more while President George W. Bush was reading to schoolchildren during a public visit, taking his administration by complete surprise in the biggest sneak attack on American citizens since Pearl Harbor, that actually left more killed and wounded than Pearl Harbor did.

Compared to any of this, this single surprise attack by terrorists overseas was really pretty small compared to far worse incidents that took place right here on U.S. soil where security and intelligence should have been much stronger. There were certainly emergency efforts undertaken to save the four lives lost, but agents associated with an Al Qaida offshoot effort used the cover of some violent anti-U.S. demonstrations to conceal these attacks with heavier weapons than the rocks and bottles of the street mobs.

If this inquiry into this minor attack is a sincere effort to improve embassy security in the 189 out of 194 countries where U.S. embassies and consulates exist, then that’s one thing. But, if this is just a mere political attack to blow a minor incident of terrorism up into a mountain for political reasons, then history clearly proves that many far worse attacks than this happened many times before right here on American soil.

Improving security at American missions around the world amounts to something. Making politics of this sad incident amounts to nothing really gained, and no one made any safer.

    • fustian24

Paul, I’m really not following you here. Are you suggesting that this wasn’t important enough to warrant the President’s interest?

If so, I don’t think you get the gravity of what happened here.

This is either a case of criminal negligence or complete incompetence. You take your pick.

Ever seen our embassy in Berlin? Huge concrete blocks, soldiers with machine guns. No attack like we saw in Benghazi would be possible.

      And that’s Berlin.

With a German police force and Army that would be more than willing to intervene quickly and immediately.

But Benghazi? No security in Benghazi? It’s insanely, mind-bendingly and offensively stupid. How can any American official be this idiotic and still be able to walk under their own power without drooling?

A budget cut problem you say? Maybe we could miss a State dinner or two. Hey maybe Obama could pass on a vacation here or there. Or, here’s a thought: If we couldn’t afford to secure our people in Benghazi, maybe we shouldn’t have had an embassy there.

You remember that guy that went up into the Alaskan wilderness to shoot a documentary about grizzly bears? The guy thought that because he was a lefty and was in tune with nature that the bears could sense that. He thought his beliefs gave him some kind of connection with the bears.

And one day, they ate him.

In the end, I’ll bet this same kind of thinking was at the source of the idiocy that lead to this disaster. Hillary and Obama thought that since they were so politically correct they had a connection with the terrorists.

And one day, they killed us.

The dumb bastards believe their own stupid rhetoric. It’s a sign of how supremely ignorant, misguided, and naive these people are.

I say let’s help Hillary and Obama understand their folly by opening an unprotected embassy in Mogadishu and forcing them to man it. As they beg for extra security, we’ll allow their entreaties to fall on deaf ears and when they are dying in an attack, we’ll go about our business too busy to pay attention.

      These people disgust me.

      • Paul Hooson

Terrorists just don’t post advance notice of their actions, Fustian. With all good intentions, President Bush was reading to a group of school children on the morning of Sep 11, and I was watching the TODAY SHOW live when the first plane hit, which appeared to be just some terrible accident. When a second plane hit a few minutes later it was clear that something big was happening. President Bush wasn’t any more responsible for this terrible 9-1-1 attack than President Obama is here. Don’t know the time zones for Benghasi, but three emergency forces including air strikes as well as commandos were put on alert and looked for some way to stage a rescue attempt. And the deaths did not happen at the embassy, but some distance from it as the terrorists knew too much about escape plans from the embassy.

When three different military special forces units had no way to stage a successful rescue attempt short of bombing street mobs in a foreign country without that government’s approval and the four persons from the embassy had terrorists thwart their escape plans though some side streets blocks away, nothing could really be done to rescue these four people.

If an inquiry into the events results in better security for the 189 missions around the world, then this is a good inquiry. Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton already took responsibility for the situation as embassy security was one of her duties. But, the sudden events that led to the street mobs gave a small group of terrorists cover to commit this attack, and there was little that could be done to safely protect these Americans once this chain of events started. Every escape and rescue attempt seemed blocked by real problems here.

        • Vagabond661

After Bush finished reading the story to the kids, he immediately took to the airwaves and blamed a video this spontaneous action of violence. Oh wait. that was Obama. And it wasn’t immediate.

I remember how the left and the media lambasted Bush because he didn’t stop reading. Obama was MIA for the whole 9 hours.

        • fustian24

Bush was excoriated for losing about 2 minutes of time when he finished reading to the school children. That criticism was unfair then and it is unfair now.

I contrast that with an ongoing terrorist attack on our embassy that Obama couldn’t be bothered to even ask about over the better part of a day. Incredible.

And, by the way, if you want to talk about 9/11 we can talk all day about the Gorelick wall that allowed these idiot terrorists to do so much damage. We were on to these guys, but CIA and the FBI were not allowed by the Clinton administration to talk to each other and we were left in the crosshairs. More democrat idiocy.

And if you really want to get chapped, read about Jayna Davis and the ties between the Oklahoma City bombing and Al Qaeda terrorists completely covered up by the Clinton administration. Remember John Doe #2? She found him. That’s an incredible story and completely squashed. I thought she must have been a kook until I saw that the head of the CIA among other heavy hitters was supporting her publicly.

Yes, it’s a dangerous world out there. And you can’t defend everything. It’s why many people believe that if we are going to continue to have to have a muscular and aggressive foreign policy. Such people understand that we are in a long term war whether we like it or not and that we do not have any option where no people die.

But some places are significantly more dangerous than others. They warrant more attention. If you are going to put an embassy in Benghazi, you simply must treat that significantly differently than an embassy in, say, Berlin.

If you don’t trust my judgement on this matter, you could consider the opinion of the people on the ground. Experienced diplomats considered their position extremely and foolishly exposed and were begging for extra security.

But their pleas fell on deaf ears.

Hillary, the “smartest woman in the world”, apparently couldn’t be bothered to consider that Benghazi might be more hazardous than the Canadian embassy.

They outsourced security to local firms of uncertain loyalties. Insane.

Can you imagine anything more stupid than this? Paul are you really wanting to defend this kind of cretinous short-sightedness?

Would you, for example, consider that just maybe a little extra security might be just the thing for a place like Benghazi? That maybe it’s a different kind of place than Switzerland, or Austria, or Finland, or Japan?

As I’ve said before, this is simply stupid on its face. Hillary’s behavior since has been both disgusting and craven. If she had the slightest iota of integrity, she would immediately resign and try to live a humble life shunned by all good people of sense.

You talk about an inquiry into what happened. Where is the inquiry? Nobody is talking any substance and there are no boots on the ground doing squat about bringing anybody to justice. There’s a lot of butt covering, but no inquiry of any substance.

I’d like to know, for example, why those marines thought they should break cover to laser illuminate the terrorists attacking them. They had to have been told that there were airborn assets supporting them, else why would they do it? This act killed them.

Someone told the military to stand down. Who?

You claim that the terrorists coordinated this with protests over the video. Where is there any evidence that was the case? If that was the plan, why were there no protestors in Benghazi to provide additional cover?

Again, stupid on it’s face and part of the coverup for Obama and Hillary incompetence. Not buying it.

Also, why have we not heard a single word out of those people rescued from the compound. What story do they have to tell? That’s an interesting group of people that have managed to completely fall off the face of the earth. Don’t you think this is a bizarre thing?

          • If this were some cheap-ass novel, they’d all be dead now in an attempt to cover the administration’s stupidities.

Here’s some food for thought. Theory: Obama was disengaged on Benghazi because he wanted to disassociate himself from a policy (shipping weapons to Syria) that he was against all along. Details on this theory can be found here:
