Florida Lt. Governor quits amid probe

Here is an excerpt from an AP story published by FoxNews.com:

Florida’s lieutenant governor resigned and nearly 60 other people were charged in a widening scandal of a purported veterans charity that authorities said Wednesday was a $300 million front for illegal gambling.

Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll’s resignation came a day after she was questioned in the investigation. Her public relations firm did work for the St. Augustine-based charity Allied Veterans of the World, but she has not been accused of wrongdoing.

Authorities said the probe involved 57 arrest warrants and 54 search warrants issued at gambling operations in 23 Florida counties and five other states: South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said charges, which will be formally filed next week, include racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering and possession of slot machines.

“It’s callous and it’s despicable,” Bondi said of the alleged scam, which she said “insults every American who ever wore a military uniform.”

Authorities refused to discuss any ties between Carroll, a 53-year-old Republican, and the investigation. Her aides had no immediate comment.

Who will replace Carroll as lieutenant governor is anyone’s guess right now.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi getting the job.

Glad to see a crook out of a job

It’s always amazing when someone with a relatively easy, good-paying job, with long-term employment prospects… does this.

I mean, even if she loses an election, there are a lot of companies that would happily hire an ex-LtGov just for the contacts and name recognition, and pay a lot of money for the privilege.

But they can’t seem to pass up the large piles of (seemingly) easy money, and get caught. Morons.

If she’s found guilty, then punish to the absolute fullest extent of the law. We cannot tolerate elected officials engaging in this sort of misbehavior.

Door, ass, excessive force applied to leave sufficient bruising for a lasting memory.
If she is found guilty I hope she does time with those wonderful crooks from IL. Just how stupid do you have to be to screw up a gig like Lt. Gov of a large state? I suppose we’re about to find out.

    It just hit me:

    Black Lt. Governor.

    White AG.

Oh, wait… The black LG is a Republican. Never mind.

Yeah I was wondering what party she was from. Not a Warner story, I see.

A retired Navy officer, what a shame. Not sure she did anything illegal, though. It looks pretty arms-length and ambiguous. Her PR firm represented this fake charity which had internet cafes which did gambling. Probably a lot of plausible deniability, even if she’s not fit for public office.

“It’s callous and it’s despicable,” Bondi said of the alleged scam, which she said “insults every American who ever wore a military uniform.”

That’s a bit over the top. Sorry, I don’t like rabid female prosecutors a la Nancy Grace.

There are few insults to every American that ever wore the uniform as big as the insult that Chico represents.

Perhaps Chico could remind us how he is better than anyone who never worn the uniform, or how only people who wore the uniform should have the right to bear arms, or how only veterans should have he right to speak out about the military or national defense, or how the privileges he earned by serving should never be cut and that all Americans should suffer before even a single penny of his benefits are cut (because as a vet what he is owed is superior to the needs of anyone else). If all veterans were as selfish and bigoted as Chico we would have cut the DOD budget down to zero decades ago.

Every time you go on a rant like this, Jim, I think of what Samuel Johnson said: “Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea.”

I am so happy that you’ll be paying taxes for my $2700/month reserve pension and medical care that I get in just a few years.

Once again, the Republicans relearn the lesson that token minority candidates are not a good idea. Ms. Carroll was choosen to run for Lt. Governor because she was black. A white candidate with the same qualificaitons and background would have never been nominated or elected. Just like Michael Steele was an embarrassment along with most quota candidates, Florida Republicans have to relearn a lesson that should have been learned long ago.

    • jim_m

Says the man who defends the party of Hank Johnson. Yeah, minority dems are never an embarrassment to their party. Thanks for demonstrating what a racist dumbass you are.

      • superdestroyer

The question is not what the Democrats are doing because Democrats support quotas, set asides, and tokens. Do you really think that a party where a major portion of the Congressman keep proposing race-based reparations would ever be embarassed about token candidates.

However, the more conservative party should avoid token every time. How can a conservative party talk about merit, freedom, hard work, long term planning and then nominate a racial token who is obviously unqualified and ended up being an embarrassment. If Republicans start avoiding obviously unqualified candidates, then it will not be harmed by incompetents like Mr. Carroll or fools like GW Bush.

        • jim_m

You believe that every minority conservative is by definition a token. There are no minority conservatives hat you actually have ever stated are legitimate conservatives and deserve to be backed. My point was that there are loads of empty headed lefty minorities that serve in government and they are little more than steppin fetchits for the lily white dem establishment, but you are perfectly OK with that. You have no problem with the left using minorities.

          • superdestroyer

The point is that from the Democrats public stated policy positions, token and quota blacks are perfectly acceptable. However, from the policy and governance positions of the Republicans, tokens and quotas should never be acceptable. How can the party that says that there should be more freedom and less government then promote the idea that people should be judged by their race or ethnicity instead of their ability or performance.

If you believe that there are many minority Republicans how have trememdous ability and talent and have a great track record of performance, then please list them. All I ever see are the Michael Steele’s and Condi Rice’s who were promoted way past their ability level because they were black.

          • jim_m

OK I see where you are coming from. When you believe in institutionalized racism (like the dems do)it’s OK to be a racist, but when you don’t then anything that smacks of tokenism deserves to be criticized.

          • The point is that from the Democrats public stated policy positions, token and quota blacks are perfectly acceptable.

So, the Democratic Party judges people according to skin color. Who knew?

  • ackwired

Mixing gambling with the military? “Insults every American who ever wore a military uniform”?
    I’m guessing she’s not a veteran.

First, we don’t know that she’s guilty. At this point she hasn’t been arrested along with some 57 or so others.

Second, I’ve always had a nagging feeling about Nelson Cuba. Always knew deep down he was a shyster. Our Mayor has recently head-butted with Cuba about reforming the public pensions of the FOP. Who knew that Cuba didn’t want any reforms because he was likely withholding all other post-retirement charity for his own use.
