84-Year-Old Obama Supporter Pulls Gun on Conservatives Protesting

An 84-year-old Obama supporter is accused of pulling a gun on a pair of middle-aged white women who were hosting a protest of Obama and his policies in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

As WSBTV reports, “Protestors Toni Pendley and Marge Moore are part of the Overpasses for Obama’s Impeachment movement, a national movement that places signs along interstate overpasses with anti-Obama messages.”

Toni Pendley and Marge Moore

On September 28, the women were protesting on the Steve Reynolds Overpass above Interstate 85 when they said that a maroon car drove by. The driver, the women said, pointed a gun at them.

The women weren’t the only ones to see the gun, though. Police also received a 911 report from another person on the scene–one unconnected to the protest. The 911 caller also noted the license tag. That was the help police needed to track down Smith.

The elderly man, Roy Smith, said he kept a gun in his car in case of carjackers, but apparently he thought it was useful for supporting Barack Obama, too.

After Smith was arrested some folks got all soft on him. In the photo, Smith is seen wearing a nose line for oxygen. But cops aren’t softening.

He is “not your typical suspect,” conceded Gwinnett Police Cpl. Ed Ritter. But the officer went on to say that it “doesn’t matter what his age was, he still threatened somebody with that gun and he is being held accountable for it.”

Mr. Smith is free on $1,000 bond.

Isn’t this just typical? Democrats claim to be the more adult, more caring, anti-gun types that hate violence. But the second you oppose their ideas they start getting angry and waving guns around or otherwise getting violent. Just like in the video posted above where an Obama nut case started pushing around a woman and punching a man for no reason.

Typical, indeed.

Well, let’s not go all Glenn Beck lunatic Idiocracy with this one. The plural of one anecdote does not equal some type of data much less a national trend. That aside, obviously Obama’s supporters are at various levels unhinged. By defintion if you voted for Obama either you’re very old, or stupidly young, or a unionized government worker, or a spoiled-brat rich kid, or someone who’s suffering from some type of organic brain defect or condition or at minimum a mood disorder. That all goes without saying. The more interesting issue with this story however — although for obvious reasons it’ll be missed on a blog such as this one — is that of the demographics of these asinine overpass protesters. Who has the time for such nonsense? Who would have the inclination to waste their time in that manner? Those are the exact groups of cocooned and loopy people who’ve saddled us with the likes of Angle, O’Donnell, Akin, Mourdock, Miller, Paladino, DioGuardi, Buck, DeMint, Palin, etc., and, yes, with Obama himself. The ironies would be lost on them.

Why thank you for sharing and fleeing, though we’d prefer you did less of the former and more of the latter.

    • Hank_M

“The plural of one anecdote does not equal some type of data much less a national trend.”

It would if the person was a registered conservative pulling a gun on some Obama supporters protesting the Koch bros. And I could be wrong but I suspect that is the point WTH is trying to make.

    • Jwb10001

So you warn us not to go all Glenn Beck ( I guess he’s just too much for you) then you say things like “By defintion if you voted for Obama either you’re very old, or stupidly young, or a unionized government worker, or a spoiled-brat rich kid, or someone who’s suffering from some type of organic brain defect or condition or at minimum a mood disorder”

I don’t pay much attention to Beck but I suspect he’s never said anything nearly that nasty about people that support Obama.

Then you say “The more interesting issue with this story however — although for obvious reasons it’ll be missed on a blog such as this one –is that of the demographics of these asinine overpass protesters. Who has the time for such nonsense? Who would have the inclination to waste their time in that manner?” I know Glenn Beck has never talked about people that oppose Obama in such nasty terms. And for added value you throw a little insult to the group here.

It seems to me anyone that can be as nasty and caustic as you shouldn’t be too critical of Glenn Beck. But I know I’m wasting my time typing this as you’ve already run off to put out another drive by hit on another thread somewhere.

Yet Mr Grey Poupon fails to recognize the fact that if one person in the tea party merely disagrees with an Obama policy than they are all raving lunatic racists.

    • sfcmac

I guarantee you that the demographic of the protesters are good, decent hardworking, taxpaying Americans. The demographic of the gun-toting Obama nutbag, not so much. He was probably on his way to the food stamp office.

  • JWH

Arrest him, charge him, send him to court. I also question whether he should be allowed to carry a weapon.

    • Jwb10001

If he’s found guilty he won’t be allowed to carry a weapon at least for a while.

  • Paul Hooson

As much as I support gun rights, there’s been some cases of persons suffering from advanced age dementia who have fatally shot persons. The famous singer Marvin Gaye was shot to death by his elderly father who didn’t recognize him in his own home for example. Gun rights supporters need to recognize that some persons who have developed dementia, who have greatly reduced mental capability should not have access firearms. In some nursing homes people with dementia will argue with staff that staff stole their wristwatch which they are actually wearing at the time and cause confrontations, etc. The man arrested in this picture obviously has health problems for one thing, and may not be in his right mind as well, because his actions were so bizarre.

    • Retired military

You can tell all that just by looking at a picture, Man, You should go into the medical profession You could make a mint under Obamacare. No office visits required. Just email a picture and you get an instant diagnosis.

        Isn’t that a felony?

        • jim_m

Practicing stupid without a license ought to be illegal and then we could deal with jackasses who write the BS above.

          • Paul Hooson

Jim M, my own father had some stroke problems and I ordered him not to drive any more. One night he went out in the car and sure enough had problems and had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance. My dad was an excellent driver when young, but after strokes and advanced age he lost those skills. Family members, not government need to tell elderly family members when they shouldn’t drive or even have a gun in their possession.

No, by all means. let him try.

Since he voted for Obama it’s okay. Not legal but the DOJ wont prosecute.

          • http://wizbangblog.com/author/rodney-graves/ Rodney G. Graves

The DoJ has not upheld the laws in a uniform manner since January of 2009…

      • Paul Hooson

I do have a lot of education in social work and elder care. I decided not to go into that line of work. But, some county social worker needed to have contact with this guy if he lived alone and decided whether he is capable of living alone if he does, etc. On a case by case basis these workers try to connect elders with services or prevent them from being a threat to themselves or others. None of this involves any changes in gun rights laws because this is a limited welfare check on people of advanced age who may not be getting food or other vital services because they don’t leave their home very much, etc.

        • jim_m

I do have a lot of education in social work and elder care.

Seven years of college down the drain!

          • Paul Hooson

My 7 years of college I never used for clinical practice, but it gave me the opportunity to meet new girls each term. And that wasn’t entirely unpleasant. Social work and psychology skills have been useful in business. I’ve owned businesses since the age of 23, which became my real calling, but education is never a total waste, where skills you learn are always useful for something or other.

    • Jwb10001

I believe that gun supporters do recognize that people that are not responsible for their own actions should not have fire arms. It seems to me that gun rights supporters are also big gun safety supporters. Besides, gun supporters recognizing this doesn’t really change anything does it? I question weather his actions are as bizarre as you think given the heated rhetoric coming from Obama these days. If this were flipped we’d be having a lecture about political discourse but since it’s Obama calling conservatives hostage takers etc. I guess it’s ok.

    • http://wizbangblog.com/author/rodney-graves/ Rodney G. Graves

And there have been cases of night club owners shooting people in police custody. Best surrender any and all firearms now…

      • Jwb10001

Old people can be pretty dangerous in cars too, probably a good idea for car rights supports to understand that.

        • Paul Hooson

Some states are very concerned about some drivers of advanced age. I was injured back in 1978 when an elderly truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into my car. Then two years later he nearly killed his wife when he drove the wrong way down the freeway, causing a head-on crash, finally losing his license to drive after this for habitual problems.

        • Studying_Nomad

That’s why old people are required to take driving tests more often.

          • Jwb10001

Which part of the constitution grants the right to drive a car, I forget?

      • Paul Hooson

No. I support gun rights. This is an elderly man who might be suffering from dementia not able to provide food for himself who might have a gun in his possession who needs to be in a nursing home. A social worker needed to have contact with this man long before this incident to evaluate his living situation and whether he needs welfare checks.

        • jim_m

We have already seen the obama admin’s take on enforcement of psychiatric issues. They enforce it to mean that anyone who is “at risk” for having a problem should not have guns regardless of what their true condition is. So military vets who seek counseling are having their guns confiscated, vets who cannot handle their affairs due to other disabilities are having their guns confiscated.

Yes there should be a mechanism to identify the mentally ill who should not have guns, but THIS government is not to be trusted with any authority over our freedoms. They will abuse that authority at every opportunity.

          • Retired military

But with crazy people running around the dems wont have to go to the insane asylum to get their votes. They can just pass out the cigs and booze when they get into the voting van on the way to the polls.

          • Paul Hooson

No, you don’t want government involved in new blanket laws. You only want piecemeal solutions to individuals such as someone with advanced age who should not be driving or is unable to even go to the store and feed themselves. Families need to step up and be sure their loved ones are looked after and recognize when they need a nursing home help.

    • jim_m

Substitute alcohol for guns and alcoholism for dementia and you get a similar argument for prohibition. There is nothing new in progressive politics just the same old bullshit recycled in a new package with the hopes that the stupid will let progressives run their lives for them.

Just because there are “some” people who cannot handle guns, or booze or money or dozens of other things, doesn’t mean that “no one” should be allowed those things or that we are justified in putting idiotic restrictions on those who can handle them.

Only the profoundly stupid fall for such an argument. Paul is to be deeply pitied.

    • Studying_Nomad

There have been many stories of old people doing stupid things. God didn’t intend for them to live this long, and certainly not drive or shoot for this long.

Can’t argue with that too much. The article doesn’t say one way or the other. One might assume that, since he pointed the gun at an “impeach Obama” group of people, then he probably doesn’t agree with the sentiment.

Yes, people standing on the sidewalk are always an impediment to traffic, let’s gun them all down. You really have to be a pathetic apologist for obama to claim that this had nothing to do with their message and was somehow unrelated and simultaneously claim that even if it wasn’t related to their message that a black man is not a supporter of obama. Odds are strongly against that.

But go ahead and spin your ridiculous, credibility shredding excuses. Maybe you aren’t a dishonest ideologue, maybe your just a moron. Then again those are not mutually exclusive concepts either.

      • rancefrayger

I found a half dozen other accounts of this story. None of them said anything about the man in question being an Obama supporter. One of them did quote one of the protesters who said he complained to the two women that they were on public property and that
they should take their signs, which called for the impeachment of the
POTUS, on to their own yards.

I really don’t care if he was an Obama supporter or not, but when you lead with a headline that says he is, you should back it up with a shread of a fact.

        • jim_m

OK, so regardless of whether or not he is an obama supporter we have evidence that he does not believe in or at least understand the constitutional concept of freedom of speech.

He must be an Obama supporter. Democrats are always telling us that the only possible reason anyone could oppose Obama is racism. Spike Lee says African-Americans can’t be racist. Ergo, any African-American must ipso facto be an Obama supporter. (Unless said African-American is not a leftist, in which case he/she isn’t really black anyway.)
