Pistol Turned to ‘Submachine Gun’ By Clueless Media

Once again we get proof of how mindless and clueless the media is, how they don’t fact check, but just mindlessly pass on each other’s bad work ad infinitum. This time it happened with a story about a criminal who used a .22 caliber pistol in a crime but one clueless reporter turned it into a “submachine gun” and hundreds of his mindless colleagues followed suit passing the lie on and on and on.

Clueless reporter Darryl Holliday of DNAinfo Chicago, a website that caters to local news, reported on an incident that was perpetrated by a man from West Garfield Park who began wielding a .22 caliber pistol in a grocery store because he didn’t want to pay the 22 cents tax on a bottle of pop he was trying to buy.

Holliday “reported” that the crook “pulled an Intratec submachine gun out of a Gucci satchel,” and in the next paragraph again claimed the piece was a “submachine gun” saying, “Officers arrived on the scene shortly after to find Shelton’s Gucci bag open on the counter as well as 15 bullets in the blue steel .22-caliber submachine gun–eight live rounds in one magazine, five in another and one in the chamber, according to court documents.”

Of course, it is clear that reporter Holliday doesn’t have any idea what he’s rambling on about. The .22 caliber Intratec pistol is not a “submachine gun. It is a semi-automatic pistol like every other semi-auto pistol.

A submachine gun is an automatic rifle that uses pistol cartridges instead of larger ones such as rifle or armor piercing cartridges. A one-hand-held version of this weapon is called a “machine pistol,” but it is also fully automatic.

The Intratec pistol used in this crime is not a fully automatic weapon, however. It is semi-auto-meaning it fires only once when the trigger is pulled. It does not expel a stream of bullets like a fully automatic weapon does.

Yet, as soon as this story went live on April 13, dozens of other so-called news outlets took up the claim that this dolt used a “submachine gun” in his crime.

All one need do is put “Nahshon Shelton submachine gun” in any search engine and dozens of so-called news stories will be revealed saying that the criminal used a “submachine gun.”

It all just shows that whenever you see a report on guns in the Old Media establishment, you should not trust it. They don’t even know the proper definitions of firearms terms and from there all their “facts” are suspect.

  • A Sub-Machine gun is a fully automatic weapon that fires pistol caliber rounds from a short barrel / short overall length.

The entire article is incoherent. The number of bullets in the magazines does not add up correctly. The charges are not correctly noted either.

The Chicago Tribune manages to write this up in a more understandable manner and avoids the anti gun hysteria. It does not use the inaccurate description of submachine gun and mentions the highly relevant fact that he was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon (not felony unlawful use). Noting that he was a convicted felon we learn that he could not legally possess a gun, something the other article failed to tell us.

    • A convicted felon, not obeying the law?

      How odd is that?

I’ve long since ceased trusting the media on any subject.
They lied about the murders of Kitty Genovese and Mathew Shepard.
They lied about the death of Trayvon Martin.
    They lie about global warming.
    They lie about Obama.
They seem to lie about damn near everything.

So I’m not the least bit surprised they’d lie about a weapon used in a crime.

    • Most people realize they’re clueless when they see coverage of a subject they know.

But they don’t extrapolate that media cluelessness on a subject they know to subjects they don’t know about.

It’s kind of odd how we’ve got that sort of filter. “Yes, they don’t know shit about what I’m familiar with, but I’ll take their word on everything else…”

You’re assuming they have the intelligence to make up a lie; as opposed to just being totally incompetent. Ignorance is not knowing, stupidity is not being able to learn. With the media, I always go with stupidity.

Leftism is a mental disorder. A collection of liberal arts classes culminating in a journalism degree from a loopy institution no less (Columbia College in Chicago) does not equal an actual education. Being a reporter is not real experience in anything. That Darryl Holliday fellow is exactly who and what his resume says he would be. Plus he’s got at least a decade or more to go before he’s even age-eligible to run for president. Young, uneducated, inexperienced and airheaded, like pretty much every other liberal media wag. Ultimately it all comes down to demographics. P.S. — Keep that all in mind when you’re listening to the likes of Malkin, Beck and Limbaugh, too. Flip sides of the same coin.

US Press once again Declines to Call White Terrorism in Kansas, Nevada, White Terrorism

    1. White terrorists are called “gunmen.” What does that even mean? A person with a gun? Wouldn’t that be, like, everyone in the US? Other terrorists are called, like, “terrorists.”

    2. White terrorists are “troubled loners.” Other terrorists are always suspected of being part of a global plot, even when they are obviously troubled loners….

    10. There is nothing you can do about white terrorists. Gun control won’t stop them. No policy you could make, no government program, could possibly have an impact on them. But hundreds of billions of dollars must be spent on police and on the Department of Defense, and on TSA, which must virtually strip search 60 million people a year, to deal with other terrorists.

Terrorists are people killing others with the aim of political change. This guy was just a lunatic who finally cracked. His acts were not driven by a belief that political change would result but out of impotent rage that his view were not shared and so he lashed out at the people and groups that he irrationally hated. This wasn’t terrorism.

  • Thank you for pointing out it was a .22. And sin taxes are the most insidious of taxation, as it treats taxes as a punitive engine to drive a certain behavior…in this case to stop the FREE WILL of choosing “sugary sweets.” He went about his revolt in the wrong way, but I understand where he is coming from.

    • Commander_Chico

a .22 can still kill you.

      • jim_m

They are manipulative and corrupting. Sin taxes were once for things like tobacco and alcohol. But today’s left wants to extend them to soda, transfat and salty snacks. The left has long screeched that you cannot legislate morality, but they seem pretty damn intent on forcing their morality on everyone else when it comes to diet and exercise.

Sin taxes are a way for the majority to enforce conformity and nothing else.

We expect nothing less from those who classify Obama as a success.

The news media needs to hire someone from Bosnia. Those guys knew their guns so well that most of the guns they used in that conflict were handmade in small workshops. This Chechen handmade gun looks fairly impressive as well.

  • It says “according to court documents” so maybe the police wrote it up as a submachine gun. But apparently didn’t want to charge him as an NFA violator.
