Why is the TISA Legislation Being Kept Secret? Here’s Why!

TISA, the Trade in Services Agreement, is being pushed by the Obama administration and the Republican leadership. The President wants fast track authority to negotiate this deal and the Boehner/McConnell Axis of Stupid wants to give it to him. Fast track means Congress can’t amend any deal Obama negotiates, they get an up-or-down vote.

Don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of TISA, it’s companion legislation to the TPP – Trans Pacific Partnership.

The biggest problem that we have with this legislation is that not only has nobody actually read it – ObamaCare anyone? – but nobody CAN read it. It’s in lockdown, it’s a secret. The Congress literally has to pass the legislation so we can find out what’s in it, but we won’t be able to see it until five years after TISA is finalized and in force.

Supporting passage of this legislation requires that we trust not just Barack Obama, but that we trust the Republican Leadership in the House and the Senate.

It looks like WikiLeaks may be coming to the rescue. They’ve managed to their hands on 17 pages of the draft and they’ve released it.

Here’s the background.

The deal, which has been under discussion behind closed doors since early 2013, is intended to remove barriers to trade in services. It’s a sort of companion piece to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which cover trade in goods – but potentially far bigger, with Wikileaks claiming that ‘services’ now account for nearly 80 per cent of the US and EU economies.
And the contents of TISA make interesting reading, particularly for anybody concerned about privacy. Under the draft agreement, the EU would be barred from requiring the personal data of its citizens to be held within European borders, an idea currently under discussion in Germany.

Relaxed privacy requirements. What does that mean to you? Well, for starters consider that Facebook and Google are huge supporters of this. It will potentially give them free reign to do with your personal data as they please.

Never mind trusting Obama and the Republican Leadership to do the right thing, how about trusting Facebook and Google?

Think of this as ObamaCare on steroids. Think of being telemarketed by everybody when your personal data gets sold. Think of this as a knock on the door late at night when the NSA shares your “suspicious” buying and reading habits with any one of a hundred federal agencies that have SWAT teams.

You think we’re paranoid. Maybe we are, but again, do you trust Obama to act in your best interest? Remember, you get to keep your doctor and your health insurance bill will drop $2,500.

3 strikes and you are out.

  • BooBots

No more ‘pass it to find out what is in it’! Strike down this TISA Beast…and all others of its ilk.

I Do Trust Obama…to Lie With Impunity!

  • Tanuki Man

Please note: “free rein,” not “free reign.” (Yes, I know it’s a grammar nazi point but it’s become on of my pet peeves.)

    • jim_m

      Quit reigning on our parade.

      • Tanuki Man

        (nodding) You have my word.

  • ohio granny

With the country in peril from Muslim terrorists, Russia threatening, the Middle East on fire we could not have worse people in charge of our Federal Government in Obama, McConnell and Boehner. For Congress to even hint at giving any president, especially this one, such power is stupid beyond belief. Do any of these people even think about what kind of world they are leaving for their children and grandchildren?

  • Commander_Chico

So, Obama is a “socialist” but he keeps delivering the USA into the pockets of the largest transnational corporations and Wall Street finance, and fucking ordinary American workers over? I don’t get it.

    • jim_m

Obviously you do not get socialism or for that matter, communism. The purposes of both ideologies is to alter the distribution of wealth from one which is merit based, where people can become wealthy through innovation and hard work, to a system where wealth is acquired by political connections.
This is the truth behind the Soviet Union and behind western European socialism. Both systems were about pulling the ladder up behind so that people who were not able to participate could not join the elite. Obama has become extremely wealthy by not ever performing a single day of productive work. All his positions have been gained through political connections.

      • Commander_Chico

Yeah that’s why those communist organizations like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the overwhelming majority of the Republicans in Congress support the TPP.

It’s “the left” which is mostly complaining about this, like the AFL-CIO, MoveOn and the ACLU.

You’re like a chump who’s still in love with the golddigger plundering his bank account.

        • jim_m

Nothing of what you said contradicts my comment. You are claiming that other people are trying to pull up the ladder too. So you are justifying this behavior and believe that it is right and just.

          • Commander_Chico

Yeah all of “the left” organizations are opposing it, and the GOP and USCC are fighting for it, but nothing contradicts what you said. O Tay.
