Chelsea Broadsides Sanders

According to The Hill,

Chelsea Clinton is stepping onto the 2016 battlefield against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a shift that some Democrats are interpreting as a sign of trouble for her mother’s presidential campaign.

Making her first solo appearance on the stump, Chelsea Clinton late Tuesday ripped Sanders over his proposals on healthcare and college affordability, arguing the White House hopeful wants to “dismantle” ObamaCare and Medicare.

Democrats have almost universally panned the attack, believing it to be ineffective and a misuse of her talents.

They note that Chelsea Clinton has mostly been used to highlight Hillary Clinton’s softer side as a mother and grandmother and say she seemed uncomfortable shedding her first daughter persona for the role of attack dog.

“The thing that tells you as much as anything about [the Clinton campaign’s] current state of mind is Chelsea going on the attack. It tells you everything you need to know,” said one Democratic strategist. “That this [challenge from Sanders] is real and they’ve got to be freaking out.”

The attack caught many Democrats, including Sanders and his supporters, by surprise.

Following Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, CNN played the clip of Chelsea Clinton’s criticism directly to Sanders. The Vermont senator held back a wry smile as he offered a measured rebuke of Chelsea, who is nearly 40 years his junior.

“As much as I admire Chelsea, she didn’t read the plan,” he said.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who is one of only two members of Congress who has endorsed Sanders for president, told The Hill the attacks are a sign the Clinton campaign is worried about Sanders’s rise in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Several pundits are apparently confident that Hillary’s southern strategy will overwhelm Sanders regardless the outcome of Iowa and New Hampshire. Given that, throwing Chelsea into the fray is eyebrow raising, to say the least. Indeed, the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll shows:

Over all [sic], 48 percent of Democratic primary voters across the country support Mrs. Clinton, while 41 percent back Mr. Sanders, the poll found. Just a month ago, she led Mr. Sanders by 20 percentage points nationally.

The Clinton campaign’s internal numbers may be showing similar results. The HMS Hillary not only faces legal icebergs, it also appears that a socialist torpedo is rapidly approaching her port side.

It’s part of the “Keep the Clintons Out of Jail” program. Grandma needs to become President. Does anyone not believe that Bill will throw Hill under the bus as part of a plea bargain?

  • Hank_M

More proof of just how despicable Hillary (and Bill) is, using their daughter to attack her political opponent. And I have no doubt that if Sanders attacked Chelsea, they would have taken the “how dare you attack our daughter” approach. Because if there’s one thing Hillary is an expert at, it’s being the aggrieved victim.

    • Retired military

Just wait for the cries of “why are you picking on my daughter” from Hillary

      • Commander_Chico

What they are doing is calling criticism of Chelsea’s bullshit sexist and condescending.

        • Ha, Ha!

        • retired military

Expect to hear the sexist word a lot in the next 12 months.

  • Retired military

I didn’t know Mr Ed had blonde hair.

    • iwogisdead

Heh. I was gonna post something like Chelsea is only trying to nail down the really ugly underachieving rich young female vote, but you did it in many fewer words.

    • Brett Buck

Looks more like her daddy (Webb Hubbell) every day! That’s a shame…

      • Nah. I’m sure she is the genetic product of Bill and Hillary. What remains unclear is who wielded the turkey baster.

  • mikegiles

A broadside is when you pull in close and go toe to toe. What Chelsea did was fire a couple of shots across Sander’s bow, in an attempt to make him slow down.

    • Scalia

the whole side of a ship above the water line, from the bow to the quarter.
all the guns that can be fired from one side of a warship.
a simultaneous discharge of all the guns on one side of a warship.
any strong or comprehensive attack, as by criticism.

      • mikegiles

Her attack was neither strong nor comprehensive.

        • Scalia

IYO. All this over one word? Do you have anything substantive to say?

          • mikegiles

Words are important. The manner in which something is presented affects the way it’s perceived. It probably hyperbole, but a “broadside” describes a ruthless, all guns blazing, all out attack. .

          • Scalia

Confirming what I wrote. You have nothing substantive to say.

          • mikegiles

As opposed to a cut and paste job of a dictionary definition? What are you contributing to the conversation?

          • Scalia

I initiated the thread, genius. The topic is actually about Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the indication that they recognize she’s not the shoo-in she once was. That runs right past you because you want to impose upon my post a definition of a word to contribute…..what? Nothing.

          • mikegiles

Interesting. I simply pointed out that Chelsea’s broadside was in no way a broadside, just a shot across Sanders bow, pointed out that words have meaning; and you seemed to become very belligerent. Why?

          • Scalia

Because “broadside” can be a strong attack. You disagree with that, so “strong” is a matter of opinion. To take the time to insist on a definition that is opinion-based is ridiculous. Instead, it would be more appropriate to comment on, you know, THE ACTUAL TOPIC OF THIS THREAD, and lead in with something like, “Although I disagree with the word broadside, I think it is curious that Chelsea is…”

Your only “contribution” amounts to nothing relevant to the topic. This is the fourth time I’ve observed that you’ve said nothing on topic. Care to try again?

    • Jwb10001

Idiotic attack, are there any democrat primary voters that don’t know Sanders wants to break health care to usher in single payer? This just gives him the ability to counter punch her with “she wants the status quo, broken Obamacare” If this demonstrates desperation, it also shows stupidity.

  • fustian24

    Isn’t that Webb Hubbell’s daughter?

  • Jwb10001

Why the long face Mrs. Ed

  • ZappaStache

Horrendous picture of chelsea clinton. some of her teenage pictures were truly heinous, and I thought she was actually somewhat cute in her thirties, but UGH. Arkansas Trailer Trash personified.
