Meryl Streep In Search Of Her Next Oscar?

No, she was just sending up Donald Trump at New York’s 2016 Public Theater Gala. Christine Baranski’s Hillary was abysmal by comparison.

Very funny piece on a very sad election. One of the saddest moments is when so many major Republican legislators condemned Trump as a racist this past week, but said they’re voting for him anyway. We’re talking about the presumptive nominee in the party of Abraham Lincoln, who was nearly a Biblical figure, combining all of the best traits of Moses and Job into just one honest and decent man….

      • Paul Hooson

Not everyone realizes that the Trump University case involves civil racketeering. That’s a very serious matter. A charge that plaintiffs were defrauded as a result of organized criminal activity is indeed a serious complaint against Trump’s failed university and his own character. The judge involved is competent to hear such a case involving such a serious filed complaint.

        • Hank_M

Is Trump U as bad as or worse than the Clinton U scandal?
I know, the media isn’t reporting on that.

As for Judge Curiel, that was quite the “mistake” accidentally releasing court records which provided the media with the names, locations, and contact information of the plaintiffs and witnesses in the case.

As for this being ” the first time in my lifetime that any major party figure is going into a general election with a racketeering lawsuit hanging over their character.” Right. Guess an FBI investigation is better.

          • Paul Hooson

I find both candidates unacceptable myself, so I’m not going to split hairs that one is less worse or less criminal than the other at this point in time. I’m deeply sad for our country that this is the choice of both parties.

      • Brucehenry

That’s the most condescending smartass “analysis” I’ve read in a long time. No, it’s not primatrily because of “confirmation bias” that people notice Trump says racist shit. It’s because he says racist shit.

        • Vagabond661

I remember when Trump said of Obama, “You know, a few years ago, he would be getting our drinks.”

          Or was that someone else…..hmmmm.

        • He says shit that’s defined as ‘racist’. Like saying we need to suspend Muslim immigration until we can vet them. Teh horror! How racist!

          • Hank_M

“The Racism card is being declined more often these days. It just doesn’t have the credibility it used to have.”

And yet the left and the MSM (BIRM) are using it more and more.
While the spineless GOPe goes along with it.

          • They’re afraid of the label being slapped on them, and in the political world it used to be the kiss of death.

Now, it’s got about all the sticking power of an overused PostIt note.

          • Brucehenry

I love it when “conservatives” claim that something that is clearly racist is actually not.

The Muslim ban thing is egregious on its own terms, but I was thinking more of the claim that this judge is suspect because he is “Mexican,” (He’s not, he’s a native-born American, but wink wink you know what Trump means.) Trump has said some shit that pisses a lot of women off, too. Would he demand a woman judge recuse herself if she was presiding over this case? I know a lot of black people who think Trump is a racist — are black judges disqualified from hearing a case involving Trump? Hell, he’s ALREADY said that a hypothetical Muslim judge would be suspect in his eyes.

If you don’t think, as Paul Ryan accurately said, that Trump’s remark wasn’t the textbook definition of a racist remark, I don’t know what to tell you.

This claim of PC martyrdom — that “the race card is being played” — doesn’t wash. And just because you’re tired of hearing about race doesn’t mean that the rest of us shouldn’t point it out when it rears its ugly head. You can claim it has “lost its credibility” all you want, and I agree that sometimes it is claimed where it doesn’t exist, but IN THIS CASE it is entirely justified.

          • Hank_M

Do me a favor and show me exactly what he said that was racist from his May 27th appearance.
No summary, no references to others….I’d like to see the exact quote from the transcript of his remarks.

          • Scalia

Perhaps this is what you’re looking for?

DONALD TRUMP: I have a judge who is a hater of Donald Trump. A hater. He’s a hater. His name is Gonzalo Curiel.

SHAPIRO: Trump went on to say that the judge, quote, “should be ashamed of himself.” And also said this.

TRUMP: The judge – who happens to be, we believe, Mexican, which is great. I think that’s fine. You know what? I think the Mexicans are going to end up loving Donald Trump when I give all these jobs. OK? I think they’re going to end up –

SHAPIRO: Judge Gonzalo Curiel is not from Mexico, as Trump said. He was actually born in Indiana. And today, we’re learning more about Trump University from some internal documents that Judge Curiel has unsealed. Washington Post political reporter Tom Hamburger took a pause from going through those documents to join us now. Welcome to the program.

I’ll see if I can find a more complete transcript.

EDIT: And HERE is apparently a transcript of his explanation for those remarks.

          • Hank_M

            Hi Scalia, Thanks.
That’s close. I actually found the transcript of his speech and I think it’s been distorted to level the racism accusation against him. He was giving another one of his rambling speeches . Sure he mentioned Curiel is mexican. In this day and age of identity politics, why is that out of bounds for republicans?

            The actual transcript is here:

          • Scalia

Thanks, Hank. I was looking far and wide for a complete transcript, but was unable to locate one. Curiel did himself no favor by releasing unredacted, previously-sealed documents relating to Trump. He said it was a mistake…yeah, sure.

          • Hank_M

Took me a while to find it myself. Instead we’ve all been fed edited versions of what he said including the one by NPR along with biased interpretations from the left who find racism everywhere on the right.
Hell, for the last 7 years, even disagreeing with Obama was supposedly due to racism.

What really gets me is the GOPe using this as their opportunity to derail the Donald.

Wouldn’t it be something to just once, see the Repubs stand behind and defend one of their own?

I know, Trump isn’t one of them. Which is why the party is doomed.
