Yesterday's item noting this seasons hot prom dress piqued readers interest. One Wizbang reader went the extra mile and checked out the manufacturer's prom dress line and found that the Post got the story backward - literally.
So was The New York Post trying to titillate readers? You be the judge:
Update: The Post responds. I've been contacted by the photo editors on the story who have assured me that the model was NOT wearing the dress backward. From the Impression Bridal's web site (dresses on page 7), this photo is closest to the Post version. The disappearance of the fabric on the Post model may just be because the model in the black dress is wearing a bigger size.
In the comment section Windstar says Katie Couric on Today interviewed the designer who said sales took off once a runway model wore the dress backward.
Much clearer now, isn't it?

Actually, if you look at both pictures, it is worn correctly. The Post picture is a little misleading in two ways.
1. Since the picture is taken from straight on, it hides the fact that the dress curves under the girl's arms.
2. The girl in the Post picture has adjusted her dress to show more cleavage. There is another picture on the vendor's website (the small picture with the two girls) that seems to show more cleavage as well. It is shot from the side, so the dress side is more apparent.

Incorrect! The red dress in on Backwards!
Turns out during a fashion show, it was worn incorrectly, but then sales shot thru the roof!
So, now the company is marketing it both ways.

M. Kyle,
I disagree with you. Once I heard that it might be a hoax, I looked at many pictures of it. The design is such that anyone putting it on backwards would know immediately.
Sorry, you are wrong unless you can provide substantiated evidence of what you claim.

People, it was the NEW YORK POST! Think about it... the photographer probably had the model put the dress on backwards ON PURPOSE. The Post is not above such things.
And yes, the red dress is on backwards... note how the spangles stop short of the bottom hem of the cups on the front of the dress, but go edge-to-edge on the back...

It looks like it was correct to me. If you look at the part right above the waist, where it crosses, you can see that in the back shot it doesn't cross at all until the very end. The two front shots are the same.

If any of you had watched Katie Couric on NBC this morning you would know that M.Kyle is exactly right. Katie interviewed the designer of the dress. He explicitly explained how a model at one of the fashion shows accidentally put the dress on backwards and wore it down the runway like that. Immediately afterwards, sales for the dress skyrocketed. It is now one of his top ten selling dresses. BTW, Katie was her usual annoying self and practically verbally attacked the guy for promoting and selling the dress even though it is so popular.

What if your daughter wanted to wear a dress like that? And this is coming from a 19 year old guy, not some mid-40's prude. And how about the scandalously short skirts cheerleaders wear? How dare those underage girls show their legs? Sometimes, you can even see their underpants. I mean, you can't even have sex with them! They should be covered head to toe in heavy cloth to stop boys and men from thinking about things that might be immoral or illegal.
In my day, cheerleader skirts went down to mid-calf, and that was still racy enough to cause all us boys to walk around with semi-chubbies all day.
Mmmmm. Here's to the gold old days, and the relief of rubbing one out in the bathroom after school.

I believe the red version to be backwards. Look at the front of the black dress. Turn it around and it has to look pretty weird with the cups hanging empty in the back. Probably why there is no "back view" offered in the Post's photo. Also demonstrates that they knew the red dress was backwards.

We don't have enough evidence to reach a conclusion.
Please contact the photoeditor at the Post and tell him we need something about 8 x 10 and about 300dpi.
Then when we blow it up to -er life sized, we can tell for sure.

Better still, Paul, an in-person viewing of the model in the red dress. A thorough examination of the evidence in person is the only way to resolve this.
It's just like the story of the designer who came up with a dress made out of wood. Someone who bought the dress called and complained because hers had a knothole.
"Well," said the designer, "I'll have to look into that."

Hi everyone, speaking as a person who actually wore the dress in the picture, it is worn the right way. If it was worn on backwards, then it would not fit right at all. The reason why the comparison to other pictures is different, because the company has different styles, plus it also depends what size the model is and her figure.
