It is not a mess. The #1 team will play for the National Championship in the Rose Bowl on January 1st. The #2 and #3 teams will play for the consolation prize.

Actually, #1 will play #4 in the Rose Bowl and #2 will play #3 in the Sugar Bowl. Doesn't it feel like there should be one more game to decide the champion?

Sadly, the Boi is seeing things through USC colored glasses... conference title or no, USC lost to CAL. UC Berkeley. The Golden Bears.
Honestly... conference champion or not, let's look at who lost to whom.
LSU: Florida; Tied for Eastern Division in the SEC.
OU: K-State, Big XII Champion
USC: Cal
Now, regardless of who actuall won whose conference, let's keep in mind one thing: OU, LSU, and USC have the same conference record, and if OU were not playing in a conference with a conference championship game, they'd have won theirs too. The Pac-10 is weak, and USC's schedule (and loss to a wretched team) has earned them a spot in the right bowl game.

Lest we forget that USC is the only team in Division I-A not to have lost a game during regulation.
Ten years ago, that would mean USC went undefeated.

Uh huh, and USC is the only team in the top 3 not to have a conference championship game. To be fair, if you exclude the conference championship games from the stats, OSU is 12-0 while LSU and USC are both 11-1. It's not OSU or LSU's fault that they play one game more than USC per year. Maybe they need to get rid of the NCAA regulation that conferences with less than 12 teams don't have championship games instead of revamping the BCS, because it seems to me the only thing the BCS is eliminating here is human error.

All I can say is LSU vs USC would probably have been a great one, but LSU gets my vote. D wins games and you can believe its harder to go 12-1 in the SEC than 11-1 in the PAC-10.
Those receivers for USC (or the QB) wouldn't look so impressive against a much superior LSU (vs. Michigan) defense.
And OU's defense is better than USCs so you tell me?
