Jason Mattera is my hero. Jason, president of a Roger Williams University students club has started a $250 scholarship for white students only. The move is an obvious parody of Affirmative Action and the countless scholarships that are only availible to members of various minority groups.
To qualify for the scholarship, a student has to write an essay on "why you are proud of your white heritage," and provide a photo to prove their racial background.
"We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn't really be an option," he said. "Many people think that coming from a white background you're automatically privileged, you're automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That's just not the case."
The part of this story that really solidifies the point Mr. Mattera was trying to make is that Mr. Mattera is of Puerto Rican descent, and got a $5,000 scholarship because of his color. Well, that and the disclaimer on the application:
"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants."

My only critique of this plan is the "whites only" nature. I think it should be opened a little wider to include whites or certain select minorities -- Jews and Asians, perhaps. Those two groups have suffered from their history of overachievement, and thus been historically excluded from "minority" benefits.

But if he did that, people wouldn't have as easily been able to label him "racist!" Perhaps separate scholarships for whites, Asians, and Jews should be made. Then he could be racist three separate times. :-)

Allan Bloom was right. 15 years after his book The closing of the American Mind we are there. Politics has become mud fighting. Pollitical correctness has become racism. Everything is politics right now. I came across the discussion of Mel Gibson's movie Passion of Christ. Some argue it's anti-semitic. Now John Kerry is Jewish. The movie is said to be very intense and anti- Semitic and set to be a huge box office success. I was wondering if Dean and Edwards see the movie as a deus ex machina, that's going to destroy the Kerry candidacy and that's what they were waiting for and not so much Kerry's intern problem.

I have to say that I agree with the scholarship and that I am thinking now of donating to it.
It never ceases to amaze me that most of the persons whining about it are non-caucasian,but yet it's so acceptable for them to have their own exclusive scholarships.
I'd like to see a reporter ask point blank the "multicultural union" members if they think the United Negro College Fund is discriminatory.

Our world is filled with polictal correctness propaganda. However, in this movement of trying to over correct every situation we've gone to far. Mainly, in example, Affirmative Action. At one time it served a purpose. However, Aff. Act. no longer serves a purpose within higher education due to reasoning, to much emphasis is put towards a person color, gender, ethnicity, etc. This scholarship is justly needed to show all non-causian individuals how discriminatory their race or ethnic based scholarships are. They do not promote the success of any individual but the success of an individual who fits their mold. In turn furthering the barriers of racism in America. I support the individuals responsible for this scholarship, which shows other ethnic groups how truly some of their scholarships truly are.
