Friendly fire

David Anderson is a loony leftist moonbat who, despite those obvious character flaws, is a decent, honest, likable, honorable guy. We’ve had several spirited discussions, and I’ve posted about my discussions with him before. I don’t think either of us have convinced each other of anything, but he’s certainly given me a lot to think about.

He’s been getting more and more fed up with the whole Kerry-Vietnam thing (like a lot of us have), and the other day he finally snapped. After the Boston Globe ran a story announcing that one of the Swift Boat Veterans For The Truth, Commander George Elliott, was retracting his accusations, David announced he had had enough and was boycotting the story.

The end of the story for David, however, was merely the beginning for the rest of the world. Absolutely no other media outlet had the story of Elliott’s retraction. Further, Elliott was out front declaring he had been misquoted. Finally, some people (Drudge included) noticed that the Globe reporter, Michael Kranish, was listed on Amazon.com as the author of an upcoming official, authorized “inside story” of the Kerry campaign.

Others have noted the incredible confusion concerning Kranish and books. Amazon and Barnes and Noble both listed him as contributing to the book (although Amazon has taken down the page). Most telling is that the Kranish book and the Kerry-authorized book share the same ISBN number.

Yesterday, the Glob went into full spin mode. They are standing by their story, saying they have a second affidavit from Elliott that contradicts the affidavit he gave the Swift Boat Veterans. They also say Amazon has admitted it was mistaken in it’s listings; it confused a canceled unauthorized project with Kranish’s contribution with the book it replaced, an authorized by the campaign book.

In response to the Glob, Captain Elliott has issued yet a third affidavit. In it he acknowledges that he made misstatements concerning minor points in his first statement, but restates the substance (and many of the details) behind it. He says the Glob completely distorted his correcting second statement – and the Glob has yet to release the full text of that statement.

Over on CNN, they are quoting another Swift Boat veteran who is with Kerry. He’s accusing the Bush Administration of being behind “these dirty tricks.” The Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth have no official ties to the Bush campaign, and in fact the Bush campaign is calling for an end from all ads from advocacy groups such as the Swift Boat Vets, MoveOn.org, the Media Fund, America Coming Together, and a host of others spawned by the McCain-Feingold Campaign Reform law. Apparently to people with the Kerry campaign, people with those organizations who support Bush are completely owned and operated by the Bush campaign, while those who back Kerry are “independent, patriotic, concerned Americans” who have so far outspent the other side by a good eight figures at last estimate.

Back to my original point, however. I feel bad for David. I’ve been burning out the whole Kerry – Vietnam mess, too. But it’s a shame that the straw that broke his camel’s back was such a flimsy reed.

J.

I wonder how much of the responsibility for this confusion doesn't lie with Capt. Elliot?

It's entirely possible both the SWIFT Boat Veterans *and* the Boston Globe are telling the truth. It seems to me the only person who stands to gain by this is Capt. Elliot who as far as I'm concerned is on minute sixteen of his alloted fifteen.

KJC:

Al,
My opinion is the exact opposite of yours. How on earth would Capt. Elliott stand to gain from being "accused" of a retraction he apparently never made, or being taken out of context?

The fact that you suggest allotted minutes of fame indicates to me that you see this as his motive. Am I wrong?

I read the affidavits myself at swiftvets.com and I see nothing wrong or contradictory about them. How did Kranish, the author of ofther Kerry books, manage to bungle it?

The attention has now been diverted to questioning Capt. Elliott's alleged retraction, away from the statements themselves made by the Swift Vets.

Who stands to gain there?

I think the most telling/damning part of what Jay wrote was this:

He says the Glob completely distorted his correcting second statement – and the Glob has yet to release the full text of that statement.

The Globe can put this to bed with one HTLM page. Just release the transcript. Anything short of that I don't believe.

I'm NOT tired of this story... (Below threshold)
-S-:

I'm NOT tired of this story, the Swiftees, but, rather, just getting warmed up about it.

That letter from the DNC attorney's, applying pressure without saying as much but while saying as much, to station managers nationwide -- and so quickly, mind you -- makes me nearly fearful to now turn on any station EXCEPT FOX News, for fear of reprimand from the Looney Leftwing Media and Kerry's fist through my front door.

Really, no exaggeration. I wrote a smarmy, sarcastic piece last Friday, in which I shared that the first thing that came to my mind when I heard/read Kerry saying that (if in Bush's shoes upon hearing of the events of 09/11), he would have "attended to it," my first thoughts were that Kerry would have stood up, yelled to the children present that he was going to burn down their village with a Zippo lighter, shoot all their animals and shoot in the back any fleeing teenager wearing a loincloth...

And, although I realize that that imagery is extreme, I really and truly now perceive John Kerry as someone that nutty, as someone that extremely affected and crazed. To Kerry and the DNC, and it seems to most Liberals, "attend(ing) to" as a means to a solution is to hack off, burn down, yell out and otherwise shoot in the back anyone raising a voice or concern.

I BET that the Swiftees have a credible story and that they should be heard. Asked about why they've only now surfaced with their story, well, Kerry's "only now" running for the Presidency, so there's THAT. For starters.

Money can and does buy a lot of service and access. I think that Kerry's someone who's accustomed to buying silence from whoever he can intimidate, or get the attorneys to intimidate, and same goes for THK (thus her ongoing looney comments that nit pick and malign anyone who "gets in (her) way!" [my paraphrasement]).

The Left can't reconcile their need to win with a Kerry character realization such as is bestowed on the world by the Swiftees. So, either the Swiftees have to be silenced or they have to be otherwise rendered moot, as in, rendered ineffective in message. All that, just so the Dems can "take the White House" -- it DOES read more and more to me as an average Jane Citizen as a coup. A coup. Really, a coup by Democrats now become so far Left as to have left the United States behind.

It's not "their" country to "take back" and the very insistence is increasingly bothering me from Dems whenever I hear/read it. I say, in conclusion here, ask THK to explain what "hell" is to her and then let her explain why she's so familiar with what that is.

More of that? NO, thanks, Teresa, you and John can keep all that hell to yourselves. Let the Swiftees sell their book, let people read their site and stories, and let them speak. Then ask John Kerry about his apparent lies. If not lies, let him offer proof to the contrary. If he can't, and the guys' stories still hold up, then, well, that's America and Kerry's a lying boob. With a Zippo lighter at the ready that is now giving me nightmares.

Man, I missed my weekend reading. Thats what I get for taking a day off and being a dad! :-)
Let me just say this. Since my Bro's JT, Tom at Mud and Phud and a couple others want me to stay part of this debate, I WILL, whenever there is some proof one way or the other. For the moment, it is just accussations flying back and forth, with Elliot in the middle of all of it. I have nothing to comment on... What should I say. Elliot says Kerry did not deserve his Silver Star... Wait, Elliot changed his mind. There was shooting that night, that is why the Swift Boat Dickhead got his medal (Sorry cant remember his name), wait! There was no shooting!
I'm confussed, I give up. It must be a loony Moonbat thing. :-)
