Having Fun at the Times' Expense

The New York Times finally breaks it silence on the Swiftboat Veterans... In the most predictable of fashions. So if they won't take their jobs seriously, why should I?

Friendly Fire: The Birth of an Anti-Kerry Ad
Liberal Fire: Birth of an Anti-Veteran Hatchet Job

After weeks of taking fire over veterans' accusations that he had lied about his Vietnam service record to win medals and build a political career, After weeks of taking fire for ignoring the story that a potential President of the United States has been caught lying about the centerpiece of his campaign, Senator John Kerry shot back yesterday, The New York Times shot back today, calling those statements categorically false with a one sided attack piece on Kerry's accusers and branding the people behind them tools of the Bush campaign. and branded them tools of the Bush campaign.

His decision to take on the group directly The Times' decision to take on the group directly was a measure of how the group that calls itself Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has catapulted itself to the forefront of the presidential campaign. was a measure how much the New York Times really has become the mouthpiece of the Democratic National Committee. It has advanced its cause in a book, in a television advertisement and on cable news and talk radio shows, It had advanced its cause by ignoring a book, television advertisements and stories on cable news, blogs and news radio. all in an attempt to discredit Mr. Kerry's war record, a pillar of his campaign. all in an attempt to make the story go away so John Kerry could be elected.

How the group came into existence How the paper came to lose all credibility and turn into a house organ for the DNC is a story of how veterans with longstanding anger about Mr. Kerry's antiwar statements in the early 1970's is a story of how a liberal paper with long standing animosity for conservatives allied themselves with Texas Republicans. allied themselves with Washington Democrats.

And so it goes. Not a word on the fact that several accusations have checked out. Only a hatchet job on the vets. The Times piece has more than a few factual inaccuracies, but then why should that matter, it's not like it is a news story.

You almost have to chuckle. Anyone can write a book about George Bush accusing him of anything and 60 Minutes will give them plenty of air time and the New York Times will run 2 weeks of front page news stories about the accusations. No questions will be asked about the veracity of the accuser or the strength of the accusations. When the accuser and the accusations are discredited, the Times will never say a word.

But should (God forbid) anyone write a book that portrays a liberal in a negative light and the media will attack with full force.

You know, I really could accept this behavior from the Village Voice or some admittedly liberal rag. But having the mainstream media do this crap then whine about how biased FOXNews is, really just strains credulity.

What this story really says is that despite their claims, Democrats have polling numbers that show these ads are killing them.

If the ads were not effective, the Dems and the media would not be on the attack. As I said yesterday, the fact the Swifties' raised 400,000 with this ad has them scared to death.

UPDATE: McGehee rocks (as usual) with a link to poll numbers on this ad....

A survey of Kerry-leaning independent voters suggests that new anti-Kerry ad by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (search) may be working. Before viewing the ad, 42 percent of respondents said they were, "definitely" voting for John Kerry, and none said they were "not sure" how to categorize their intentions.

But after viewing the ad, only 29 percent said they were "definitely" voting for Kerry, and nearly just as many said they were "not sure."

From 42% "definitely" to 29% "definitely" is devastating.

Told Ya!

Dave:

Democrats are not scared they are just mad that the Republicans will do anything in a desparate attempt to hold onto power.

They are just making sure that the "Right Wing Echo Chamber" does not work this time.

I got news for ya Dave- No matter what your political stripe.

If you think the media is attacking with full force, John Kerry himself is attacking and surrogate groups are saying "Today's the start of the mother of all backlashes" does NOT mean they are scared to death then you sir are either a hopeless optimist or lying.

The candidate NEVER EVER EVER addresses issues like this until it hurts.

Forget partisanship- anyone who knows anything about campaigning can tell you Kerry is scared of this.

Your denying it here won't make Kerry look better, it will only make you look out of touch with reality.

Sorry dude.

What this story really says is that despite their claims, Democrats have polling numbers that show these ads are killing them.

Actually, the numbers are right out in public (second to last item).

Excerpt:

Bob:

It gets even better. Incredibly, an editorial in today's Washington Times chides the WaPo for finally entering the debate and then advises them to look at all the facts.

"We are pleased that The Post has finally joined the debate swirling around Mr. Kerry's Vietnam experience. The Post and other "major" news organizations would be more helpful to their readers, and to the debate, however, if they join the investigation and address the entire story — and not simply one part of it which they wish to debunk."

This is getting better by the hour.

I don't believe that for a second. Don't get me wrong, this story should kill Kerry, but it won't. This will never affect more than a tiny handful of voters.

To all of you who are "drinking the coolade" on this, I love it!! Keep it up to continue the view of the electorate on GW Bush's empty deliveries and promises.

Democrats in the past have waited until these smears became spun into truths, but we are not going to take it anymore.

While you are all sitting around laughing and reading the same posts from your friends we are organizing and GOTV to win.

Spoons - a tiny handful is all it takes to swing results, as well we know.

But heck, he's in danger of losing his ABB base, too, but not on these charges (though maybe he's acting this way in response to the charges) -- he's been saying more and more "let's make the military =bigger=!"... which is not exactly what the antiwar people were clamoring for. There are plenty who think that he's just snowing the electorate and winking, but for Kerry to survive to a second term, should he get elected this time, he's going to have to look tough militarily. And the antiwar crowd are starting to notice that. I know some people who are not voting for anybody this election. Votes might not be swinging over to Bush, but Kerry can definitely lose votes, which makes just as much of a difference.

Dave, when the protesters start running amok in NYC at the convention, the repeat Chicago '68 scenario that seems the ultimate goal of all these ABB zanies will be complete, with miles of video showing crazed moonbats battling cops and bringing the city that is Target One for every terrorist group on the planet to a standstill.

Remember who won in '68?

TC-Leather Penguin (nice name),

I am glad that the RWSM (Right-Wing Spin Machine) is already touting how bad the protesters will be. My prediction is that they will be peaceful and effective at getting their message out.

But thanks for setting the low expectations of the protesters. So if just a couple dozen get arrested it will be a win for the Democrats.

Hey, I'm not touting anybody's spin. I've seen the websites offering protesters tactics to use that will cause all sorts of problems for the police, things like dusting gunpowder around subways to freak out the sniffer dogs and tie up the trains. I live here, friend. I got East Village/Alphabet City folks I know who are talking about going to war with the cops come convention time. I know these guys and gals pretty well, and I know they mean it. There will be a major battle in either Tompkins Square or Washington Square park. Bet on it.

I must assume that Dave and others, who do not consider the exposed and documented lies by their candidate a serious issue, are blinded by hate of the current administration (or, more likely, conservatives in general). The same "hate" they claim motivates the VRWC.

Dave, et al, please address the facts of the argument. If you cannot support your views, then do not bother to comment. The only spin machine with serious financial backing currently involved in the swift boat vets vs. Kerry issue is the massed horde of moonbat (er, democratic) 527 orgs!!!

Dave: I think that assuming that people are "sitting around laughing" at Kerry's demise, or indication of demise, is more or less a Liberal projecting their own perspective.

Most conservatives don't find demise worthy of the time or energy such that we "(sit) around laughing..."

It's, actually, sad to see someone of his self-written history being exposed for who and what he is. God knows we can't rely on the "mainstream media" to do that. Bravo, Swiftvets.
