Bob Dole's getting feisty:

Dole defends attack on Kerry's military record as 'political hardball'

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Bob Dole, a prominent Republican and former presidential candidate, defended his criticism of White House hopeful John Kerry 's war record as "political hardball," saying he had merely "tweaked" the Democratic candidate.

"This is presidential race. We're 70 some days away. It's political hardball, and certainly Senator Kerry understands that," Dole told CNN.

Dole said Kerry called him to express "disappointment" over his comments Sunday that the Massachusetts senator had won "three Purple Hearts and never bled that I know of. I mean, they're all superficial wounds."

Dole's suggestion that Kerry "never bled" runs counter to US Navy records showing that Kerry, who also won a Bronze Star and a Silver Star for bravery, still carries shrapnel in his left thigh from a February 1969 firefight.

"There's respect there," Dole said Monady. "We were in the Senate together. But we're talking about the presidential race, and I tweaked him a little on the Purple Hearts."

"I just wanted him to get off Bush's back and have his people get off Bush's back," Dole said.

heh- Had Dole shown this much spunk 8 years ago he might have beaten Bill Clinton.

Frankly, the "woe is me" line from the Democrats after they've spent 3 years calling Bush everything from a traitor to a liar to AWOl really wears a little thin.

I'm glad some Republican is willing to "tweak" Kerry over it.

And from the newsmax story Kev blogged below:

"Everybody likes quiet heroes," Dole added, saying he told Kerry, "John, everybody knows you were in Vietnam and the less you say about it, the better."

Gotta be the Viagra.

Well, you know what they say about, especially, men who brag about how great they are...(your imagination should run wild here).

At least, it's the going assumption by everyone else who hears them.

I agree, you have to give Dole a lot of credit for this. It is a very short list of people who could make that crack and remain politically viable.

For Kerry to continue this charade of an argument about medals with someone who is obviously crippled from fighting in war, is so laughable its ludicrus.

Kerry should end the petty bickering; release the records.

I agree, he should do a lot more but I give a lot of credit to Bob Dole who is actually trying to get a message across to Kerry to keep it low. Dole is a nice guy and he can see that Kerry is headed for the toilet, so he's trying to let Kerry know that he's not doing the right thing for his platform for Presidency and that he's become an embarassment to the other Democrats. Kudos to Bob Dole.

I have to agree. For several days, Bob Dole has been sending a message to Kerry to tone down for he is becoming an embarassment to the party and not at all being Presidential. Kudo's to Bob Dole who has enough guts to tell Kerry like it is.

What Bob Dole did is somewhat of a rarity in politics today- he played the role of elder statesman. That was nice to see.

Bob Dole suggested that one or more of John Kerry's Purple Hearts may have been fraudulent in some way because they were for "superficial wounds."

Dole knows better.

In a 1988 campaign-trail autobiography, here's how Dole described the incident that earned him his first Purple Heart: "As we approached the enemy, there was a brief exchange of gunfire. I took a grenade in hand, pulled the pin, and tossed it in the direction of the farmhouse. It wasn't a very good pitch (remember, I was used to catching passes, not throwing them). In the darkness, the grenade must have struck a tree and bounced off. It exploded nearby, sending a sliver of metal into my leg--the sort of injury the Army patched up with Mercurochrome and a Purple Heart."

Nitro I have some really really bad news for you.

Bob Dole ain't in the race. Neither are the Swift boat vets.

But keep taking time to smear people who ain't on the ballot. That is a good and productive use of a liberals time.

Wow, what an incredibly aggrandizing set of claims by Dole! What a braggart! Why, it's clear he feels he richly deserved the PH he got that day!

-sarcasm off-

nitro, Dole received 2 Purple Hearts. The injuries which plague him to this day, and for which I think he's more or less exclusively remembered, were quite grave. You're not trying to suggest the incident you mentioned is the self-proclaimed high point of Dole's military resume, are you? He seems appropriately modest about it, in contrast to Sen. Liveshot (and his home movies).

It's a shame that Kerry can't see the friendship behind Dole's wise advice: shut up about it, enough already, stop digging the hole you're in.

I found Dole's comments wise to the point of efficiency -- smart, well intentioned, to the point, and exactly the point. Kerry should have had the sense to take Dole's smart advice and to just, well, moveon.

I notice today that, instead, the Demos now attempt to smear Dole, smear everyone and anyone, except moveon and various attacks upon President Bush's military service. Um, someone explain to Kerry what the word, "attack" means because he's obviously missed that part of second grade.
