I watched the speech standing next to CNN's Suzanne Malveaux. In case you don't recognize the name, maybe the face will be familiar.

She had her arms crossed for the entire speech. Never smiled, never clapped, showed no visible emotions. She did strain to look at one of the 4 individual protesters (at different times and spots) who were quickly removed.

Despite what many right-wingers believe, a majority of journalists actually work hard to maintain their objectivity while covering stories.
It's unbelievable that you are surprised she wasn't applauding or reacting to the speech. That's not her job. She's not a convention delegate. She's a reporter. It's her job to observe and accurately report what's going on.
I would expect nothing more and am happy to hear that Malveaux flexed her journalistic integrity.

So you would believe that she simply didn't react to the speech because she's a left-leaning reporter?
Is it your contention that, in covering the DNC she applauded and cheered with enthusiasm?

I will help clarify. If Kevin had gotten credentials to the DNC, and he was standing next to her there, odds are she would have been whistling, screaming, and applauding during any speech that was given.
I don't presume to speak for Nahanni, but considering Suzanne Malveaux works for CNN, and taking into account the general political leanings of that organization, I'm guessing my assumptions have at least a 95% chance of being accurate.

Thank you Addison for helping provide context for this thread.
However, I'm sick and tired of hearing criticism of CNN, MSNBC being left-leaning as much as FOX is accused of being more right-leaning. In the end, it's all about perception by the viewer and comes down to tone and semantics.
I personally have attended past conventions of both parties while working in TV news and stood without emotion or pause to observe and do my job.
I also know many reporters who do a very good job of working to keep their objectivity in tact.
We can all agree then that there is no true objectivity in journalism, but don't generalize like evilwhiteguy.
Thank you

Hey, I gave a five percent chance that she wasn't left-leaning. The mainstream media (including CNN) are nearly blatenly left-leaning. The New York times even admitted their leftist leanings not that long ago (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/25/weekinreview/25bott.html?pagewanted=all&ex=1248494400&en=dca31de48d445865&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland). And there have been numerous surveys that have shown that a huge majority of journalists are liberal. I wasn't generalizing, I was basing my opinion on facts.

I work in TV news. I'm a tv cameraman. I think there is a leftward bias in the media.
However, I have to provide an example of professional restraint when I personally wanted to applaud.
I was at President Bush's visit to MacDill AFB in Tampa(home of Central Command) 3 weeks after the start of the war in Iraq. I was on the risers with the rest of the cameramen. I believe in the President and believe in what he is doing. However, I didn't clap for his speech. Man I would have loved to clap with the several thousand cheering military men and women. I see it as my job to be objective while covering a story.
I don't know anything about Kevin's encounter with Ms Malveaux. I just think we need to be careful when we look for examples of bias. This may not have been the best one. If she had rolled her eyes or made snide comments...well that would have been a good example.

And senior Kerry advisor James Rubin is married to CNN's Christianne Amanpour. Tit. Tat.
But you've got to be kididng when you imply that CNN doesn't have anyone who challenges the President. Did you watch any of Fox's convention coverage? Every night, when it got turned over to Greta van Susteren, she'd interview 3 or 4 Bush supporters and argue with them. Orin Hatch, Stephen Baldwin, Don King, Lynn Swann -- she beat up every one of them arguing with whatever reason they gave for supporting Bush (she was particularly galled that any black guys would support the President).
You've obviously got your talking points down, Jim, but they don't bear any resemblance to reality.

What annoys me about her (and lots of other MSM reporters and correspondents) is that she breaks journalism 101 rules. For example, she says things like "They believe..." when she can't know what people actually believe, only what they say they believe. She should say "My sources say they believe ...". Also, she uses direct instead of indirect speech when she's reporting what people say, i.e., she speaks in the first person singular or plural FOR them. In other words, instead of saying things like "they believe, 'we are better than the Democrats because,'" she should say, "they say they believe that they are better than the Democrats because." Am I the only person out there who worries about these gaffes?

Do yourselves a favor; read a newspaper every now and then. I live in NYC, watched the towers go down 10 blocks away, and had friends that died. Don't disservice the event or their memory by acting ignorant and buying into the b.s. spin of Cheney, Rove & company.
