Kerry May Have Gotten Forged Memos

As RatherBiased notes, The Washington Post (and ABC) continue to own the Rathergate story in the main stream press. The New York Times, Fox, and NBC are noticeably unspectacular in their probing. In a story to be published in the Saturday edition of The Washington Post Michael Dobbs and research assistant Alice Crites slogged through a Yahoo! Group where Bill Burkett regularly posted. They found similarities between wording in his posts and the forged memos. They also found this:

In an Aug. 21 posting, Burkett referred to a conversation with former senator Max Cleland (D-Ga.) about the need to counteract Republican tactics: "I asked if they wanted to counterattack or ride this to ground and outlast it, not spending any money. He said counterattack. So I gave them the information to do it with. But none of them have called me back."

Cleland confirmed that he had a two- or three-minute conversation by cell phone with a Texan named Burkett in mid-August while he was on a car ride. He remembers Burkett saying that he had "valuable" information about Bush, and asking what he should with it. "I told him to contact the [Kerry] campaign," Cleland said. "You get this information tens of times a day, and you don't know if it is legit or not."

From an earlier Wizbang post I noted that CBS would have gotten it's copies of the forged memos the last week of July. It is possible that Burkett was tipped off to the evidence by 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes and was attempting to pass that information to the Kerry campaign, but it's also possible that he was part of the document forging operation (either alone or in conjunction with others) and made the DNC and Kerry campaign his second and third recipients of the forged documents.

This may be the opening salvo in the story of links between the memos and the Kerry campaign and the DNC. That opens a whole new front in the investigation, namely whether Operation Fortunate Son was based on the same documents as the 60 Minutes II story.

- The easiest senario to believe is that Rove and company assayed the docs... vetted the info contained in them....determined they were retypes and the info was bogus. Chortled and handed them back to CBS. Rove had one thing going for him that Mapes lacked. Verifiability.

Bush himself may not be personally aware of the details of any inside manipulations for his service in the TANG. But Daddy would be and would have the guard contacts to make sure.

Moreover Blair is a small town. Everyone would know of Burketts issues and politics. The posts he put up denying any personal knowledge would fit CYA for what he was about to do. A few sympethic tips to the WH about the fax traffic back and forth between Him and the Dems/CBS from a sympethetic Kinko's worker and Rove would be tracing the whole magilla.

The timing seems to be right that CBS realized it had been snookered by day two when McAuliffe popped off about Rove being behind it. I can just imagine the phone calls from Mapes to Terry.

- This fits the whole punch and pivot strategy the Bush camp has employed in this campaign. Tie the dynamite to the railroad tracks and then stand back and let the DNC deal with the train wreck...

- The more believable senario is that Rove had inside feedback even as the plot unrolled, tracking every move of the entire magilla. The early silence from the WH must have had McAuliffe vibrating like a lazyboy recliner. I can just imagine the melting phone lines between Mapes and Terry after his outburst. As too Kerry's camp and the DNC's awareness in all of this, the best chance we have of knowing the truth is when the GOP camp starts tying Kerry to it in ernest. He has no choice but to deny, deny, deny. If Mapes feels she's being thrown to the dogs she may roll over...It will be interesting to watch for the next week or two.....

Might not be pertinent but let's remember Cleland and Rassman were IN Tx delivering a letter to Bush's ranch on Aug. 25. Is it possible CBS got them at the last minute which led to poor authentication and they were in fact faxed from Tex to CBS by someone traveling with Cleland?

COMPARING THE DOTS... (Below threshold)
BR:

COMPARING THE DOTS

1. Comparison of the forged docs at CBS, FOX & USA Today:

(The dots and markings can be seen either on screen at their sites and also visible if you print it out.)

They all have those strange almost custom-made to-look-old dots. But they all seem to match in pattern formation. They do not all show the same number of dots, but the markings that DO appear, are common to all 3 sets. Please look and see if you agree. Let me know if you need links to all 3 sets. (USA Today's has 6 pages in the set, which includes the CBS 4.)

If so, then this would mean that all 3 media groups got them from the same source. I believe USA Today has claimed they got theirs from a separate source than CBS. (?) I don't know what FOX is saying. It would help if they announced when and from whom. (Their pdf creation date shows scanned in on FEBRUARY 6, 04 8:24:48 AM and it's unclear why. Fax marking dated 9/10/04 at 3:08 PM. FOX's copy of the 01 Aug 72 forged doc is missing paragraph 4, possibly a scanning or copying mishap.) CBS pdf creation date 9/8/04 (4 separate pdfs, all around 6:07 to 6:08 PM). USA Today's pdf creation date 9/9/04 at 9:57 AM, modified 9/11.

2. Further comparison: USA TODAY and GLCQ.COM:

Although USA Today's small black dots look similar to the other sets, they have an added characteristic of additional larger, lighter grey squarish shadows all over the pages. This is visible on screen as well as when one prints them.

Compare that to a doc allegedly from Bush to Col. Jerry Killian in Lukasiak's site: glcq.com (The AWOL Project). I've only just opened his site, but the very first doc I looked at is dated Sept. 5, 1972 and IT ALSO HAS THOSE LIGHT GREY SQUARISH SHADOWS. I've copied a screen photo of it to my desktop in case it suddenly disappears from http://www.glcq.com/docs/eqt_request.jpg.

I'm not saying this 9/5/04 letter to Colonel Killian is a forged doc (although there's that P.O. Box 34567 again, which wasn't assigned to anyone at that time, and one of the four known CBS forged docs dated shortly thereafter, 01 Aug 72, has Lt. Colonel - different rank just 6 days earlier.) All I'm looking at right now, are the grey shadows.

I don't know if there's already been a discussion here of Paul Lukasiak, anti-Bush "AWOL" attacker. Tell me if I'm repeating old news. (Fresh Air at Ace of Spades HQ on 9/14 found out that although he claims to be in Philadelphia, his ISP is in Massachusetts.) Lukasiak, Martin Heldt and 2 Boston Globe reporters (Latour & Walter Robinson) are all listed as sources by Col. Gerald Lechliter in his 36-page study where he tries to prove Bush's "AWOL" status at http://www.glechliter.glcq.com/critical_analysis.htm.

Martin (Marty) Heldt is the "Iowa Farmer" who got all those Bush TANG FOI docs and allegedly sold them to Dem. consultant "Brooks Gregory" aka "Freedom Fighter" in late 1999. Burkett has connections to the Boston Globe reporters. (FOXNews interview of Lezendes 9/16, one of 5 authors including Robinson, of Globe 9/8/04 slam article on Bush which is analyzed at http://www.redstate.org/story/2004/9/10/135321/013). Burkett and Heldt are connected, in that Mapes interviewed both of them (they probably have further connection to each other like being posters on the same anti-Bush sites, just haven't looked for it yet.)

Mark:

According the the NYTimes this morning, Burkett worked his way to the top of the Kerry campaign through Cleland. He was offering "information" to attack Bush with. This happened in mid-August. The LATimes says that Mapes picked up the scent of this big story in mid-August.

One has to wonder if the Kerry campaign was suggesting various media outlets contact Burkett. My guess is that all the big media were offered the same package. This would explain how USAToday came up with the same docs.

We're one disgruntled CBS employee away from complete melt-down.

Hi Mark - just when I was g... (Below threshold)
BR:

Hi Mark - just when I was going to bed, just had to peek back here. From what I've been reading here and elsewhere, Burkett has been around for a very long time, doing campaign work with David van Os (his current lawyer/handler/muzzler) and probably Robin Rather too. (The Freepers now have a Flow Chart showing the Texas part of the cabal.) Also see at ace.mu.nu, the thread called "Shadowy Links": "Apparently the noted former-Bush-supporter Burkett served as head of the Steering Committee for David Van Os campaign for Texas Party Chair." There's a whole lot more about Burkett at ace.mu.nu. starting with the Sept 12th am threads.

So he's not just someone who suddenly contacted Cleland. He's been disgruntled and attacking since about 1998. He's connected to both the Texas people as well as the Massachusetts ones which I put in my embarrassingly long item above "Comparing the Dots".

There's an interesting article on Talon.Com about CBS News producer Mary Mapes. They even interviewed her father who says he's very disappointed in her. According to Papa Mapes, Mary is a radical who got into journalism to further her agenda. Also, he claims Mapes made it her mission to get George Bush (I'm paraphrasing but that's the gist of the Talon article). You can find the story in today's World Net Daily -- www.worldnetdaily.com. Also, there's an article in NewsMax about the media suppressing coverage of the major police unions endorsing Bush. Yours truly was interviewed in that article.

BR:

Burkett was also interviewed by Rezendes (Boston Globe reporter) early in 2004. That reporter said last night on I think it was Scarborough's MSNBC show that he couldn't corroborate Burkett's stories (Mr. George Conn, Burkett's "witness" to alleged doc tampering in 1997 at the TANG on Bush's behalf, said he knew nothing of Burkett's allegations), so the Boston Globe didn't run with it then. We don't have proof that the forged docs were shown to or given to the Boston Globe then, but they were working hand-in-glove with Lechliter as Lechliter himself admits in his 36-pager.

Do they have them now, I wonder? Where is the DNC's headquarters and where is the Kerry campaign's? Are they in DC or Boston? I wonder if there's a camera at their doors, taking pictures like at Kinko's? Hee hee.

At the level of forged docs research/"typing" I see these people: Burkett, Heldt, Lukasiak, Col. Lechliter.

I'm really excited to stay here and see what more comes up regarding the link to the DNC/Kerry's campaign, but I HAVE to go to sleep. No,no, not yet - remember this early gem? From the American Spectator, Friday, 09-10, and was by-lined "The Prowler" at spectator.org. (I haven't checked there in days, don't know if they've come up with more now.) Spectator's source said THE DOCS WENT DNC, then TO KERRY CAMPAIGN, then CBS and the rest got them (or already had them since Feb), and CBS was the only one to activate/publish them on 9/8/04.

Excerpt here:
"More than six weeks ago, an opposition research staffer for the Democratic National Committee received documents purportedly written by President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian.

"The oppo researcher claimed the source was "a retired military officer." According to a DNC staffer, the documents were seen by both senior staff members at the DNC, as well as the Kerry campaign.

" 'More than a couple people heard about the papers,' says the DNC staffer. 'I've heard that they ended up with the Kerry campaign, for them to decide to how to proceed, and presumably they were handed over to 60 Minutes, which used them the other night. But I know this much. When there was discussion here, there were doubts raised about their authenticity.'"

BR:

It's also possible CBS had the docs in their files or someone's locked drawer since February, but that they didn't create the actual pdf on the computer data base until minutes before the show. What time does that 60 Minutes show start anyway? (I never watched it before.) Their 4 pdf files were created at 6:07 to 6:08 PM EST.

Re Burkett - he was alleged... (Below threshold)
BR:

Re Burkett - he was allegedly ARMY Natl Guard and Killian/Bush were AIR Natl Guard. (I say "allegedly" because I beginning not to believe ANYTHING Burkett has posted). I've been asking this question for days now, but nobody familiar with the TANG has seen my query yet: Surely the Army and Navy Natl Guard don't share the same offices or bases? Surely there's a big sign outside that says "Texas Air National Guard." ?? Not Air & Army on the same base? The one would need planes, hangars, runways. The other would need drilling fields, etc. (I'm just a gal, but isn't that so?)

So how on earth could Burkett in 1997 even BE IN THE SAME BUILDING if he's Army Natl Guard. He might have concocted the entire detailed story of him overhearing the phone conversation, the hall conversation and the alleged files in the trash can. And on top of that, the TANG didn't even keep files there after Bush completed his service. The files would have been sent to Natl HQ. (See "No Records for Former Officers Are Kept At Local Bases They all go to a centralized records depot." at ace.mu.nu.)

And he's been potentially concocting this for ages, as if to lay a trail in his miles-long internet history, so that he would be a believable source for the forged docs. And he wasn't alone in this.

Dear Kevin,

Forgive me if this is already known. Because I'm not familiar with lefty sites, I don't know if this is a new site or not: www.awolbush.com. It looks like they're trying to counter what we are doing.

The hilarious thing is that they are putting forth Lukasiak and Lechliter as reliable sources:

"...the critical work of Lukasiak and/or Lechliter. Thanks in great part to them, the case against GWB stands even in the absence of the Killian memos."

----- and yet, I think there may be a (hitherto unknown) forged doc sitting right on Lukasiak's very own site. See my reference to it in "Comparing the Dots". And that was just the first one I looked at. I made a snapshot of it to my desktop, but I'm not up on graphics and such. Things keep happening so fast, and I still haven't gone to bed - since Wed. Can you help please? It's at http://www.glcq.com/docs/eqt_request.jpg.
