It's exactly the kind of Washington politics "mavericks" abhor, and yet Palin not only participated fully, she lied about her reasons for doing so.

Poor Dan. He's really getting the cactus enema. He needs to retire to a condo in Ft Lauderdale, sit around having whiskey sours with Pete Rose & Martha Stuart, & wonder where it all went wrong.

*ahem* He's a sleaze; everybody knows it; but he won't admit it. He, Heyward and CBS are going to hunker and pull themselves into a tight little Clinton-dillo ball until all the haters and ugly people get tired, and they can get back to the important business of trying to destroy Bush and save America from itself.
There are no heads on the wall until Rather, Heyward and Mapes are unemployed. Nothing else is acceptable. And that takes television consumers telling the local affiliates they're outraged at having liars and con men run CBS News, and they will not be watching CBS until they clean house.

Where's that leftist "Hunter" from Daily Kos that posted the trash on the thread a few back ["Kerry May Have Gotten Forged Memos"] when we truly need him? [If I am wrong about the identity of this guy, I'll still stand by my depiction of him as a leftist.]
I'm sure the proud Hunter would love to stuff and preserve his ideological hero for presentation in his den.
This whole Dan Rather meltdown also reminds me of a wonderful Nietzsche aphorism:
Opinions and fish: Possessing opinions is like possessing fish, assuming one has a fish pond. one has to go fishing and needs some luck--then one has one's own fish, one's own opinions. I am speaking of live opinions, of live fish. Others are satisfied if they own a cabinet full of fossils--and in their heads, 'convictions.'"

I'm the one who made this "trophy wall" graphic. Gunga Dan is not yet in the unemployment line, but his days are numbered. If the MSM hadn't taken this story and run with it, I'd assume he'd slither out of it somehow, but Dan is a laughingstock to the conservatives, an embarrassment to the liberals, and a walking indictment of any media who don't trash him. Seriously, anyone who sticks their neck out for him at this point is asking to get it sliced off, and the MSM realize this. Even the LA Slimes, while spinning the story as best they can, won't touch Dan with a ten-foot pole.
It's unclear to me whether his two accomplices' heads will be joining Dan's on the wall of shame, given that Mapes has kept out of the spotlight and Heywards is a typically slippery suit, but I'd dearly love to be a fly on the wall in the CBS boardroom right now . . .
P.S. This graphic was inspired by by a line in Jim Geraghty's NRO piece titled "The blogs can beat him":
"...and we can end the year with the head of Dan Rather metaphorically stuffed and mounted on our collective walls."

Bill, I consider Danny Boy a foregone conclusion. "Dead man walking", as has been opined elsewhere. He simply can't be perceived as a "journalist" any more (if he ever was). The real question is how many other heads will roll.
