The Republican negotiators didn't want to take a chance on Kerry asking Bush a direct question so when they negotiated the rules, they put in one that said the candidates can't directly address one another.

well, the new people in Kerry's campaign, especially the one that's just to "discipline" him, will make him look Presidential, just like they have been since they came on board since the guy was really messing up. So it doesn't come down to looks. It comes down to "record." And Bush has the "record" whether we agree with his going to war or not - and mind you, Congress had to approve that - a president can only do what Congress will let him do. He'll win because he's the right guy for the job, not Kerry. Even the soldiers in Iraq do not want Kerry in office - read the milblogs to see that what I'm saying is true.

They cannot speak to one another and as much as I hate Kerry and his monotone voice with the I, I, I, I, but no how, why, when, where or what.. I guess I'll have to watch it. YUCK

As horrible of a speaker as Bush is, Kerry won't stand a chance. And, quite frankly, it sucks. Bush has done absolutely NOTHING to help this country during his 4 years in office. We are fighting a war that can not be won. We are spending BILLIONS of dollars to rebuild a worthless piece of shit country. We have lost the respect of almost every other country in the world because of him. He has neglected every American citizen in this country. Bottom line....he's a complete tool. The thing that really sucks for us Dems is that Kerry probably isn't the greatest choice either. But we will have to just take our chances. Hopefully Kerry will win because of some freakish "do-over" like Bush did in 2000.

Let Jay do the debate tonight - like the conventions, he puts a funny front on everything.

Wow, Roger. Way to parrot the DNC talking points. I realize you blame Bush for "losing" jobs on his watch. The fact is the internet bubble burst and 9/11 happened. Despite all that he was able to prevent a major recession by spurring the economy on with tax cuts.

He is successfully prosecuting the war in Iraq, Afghanistan is heading for elections with 10 million registered voters - 1/3 of which are women. Pretty good for a country where women once couldn't leave home without a male escort.

As for the "rest of the world" - scew 'em. Our true allies have stood by us in this most dangerous of times. Let the countries that are ruled by pettiness and jealousy fend for themselves. They all are glad to take hand-outs and live under the blanket of freedom provided by the U.S.A., but when it comes time to help us with our own security needs they all decide they're uncomfortable with a U.S. show of force. Tough turds. We're here to stay. That's something that the terrorists are learning all to well lately.

I can't bring myself to watch the debate tonight. It's difficult to watch the talking heads pontificate on how well Kerry did and how they were disappointed in Bush. Besides, Kerry voice -- like a prophet calling out to the ignorant masses -- grates on me. If the guy ever got into the White House, I'd have to stop watching the news as I don't have to hear his voice. It's like chalk on a blackboard. I hope Paul is right, though. I hope Bush does well.

They say that on some major foreign policy positions, as many as 84% of Bush supporters believe he (Bush) supports positions that he actually opposes.

Talk about informed electorate. Then again, they may not care as long as they think he can keep Osama from flying a plane into their houses.

Well, I don't know, floyd, but I looked over the "results" at that link...an Advisor from Brookings, included (something I take pause about, just saying)...and, from my own experience, no one questioned me, a Bush supporter who does not misunderstand Bush's positions on those issues that are cited as being most majorially misunderstood by Bush supporters about Bush's position on those issues (point is, I don't and I'm among Bush supporters, and that no one questioned ME).

I always wonder who are the individuals questioned in these studies, and HOW they were questioned. You can pose questions in such a fashion as to establish an opinion that is desirable to your desired outcome (nothing new there) and, I mention that here only because those numbers are very, very high -- much higher than a normal variance of populations -- and I'd be willing to bet that there was a lot of discomfort, to one degree or another, among those questioned.

Or at least, that those questioned have distinguishing characteristics that separate them from some standard of "average Republican voter". Just because the stats are so high, which indicates some problem with the method of polling itself.
