Anchors Away

Former 60 Minutes producer Don Hewitt, on Dan Rather's Bush obsession...

HEWITT: I would have told Rather what John McCain told John Kerry. Vietnam is a loser. Don't go near it.

O'REILLY: Don't even do is piece.

HEWITT: It's years ago. There is nobody in America who doesn't believe that George Bush's father got him out of going there. You know how many American fathers got their kids out of going out of there?

O'REILLY: Sure.

HEWITT: It was no crime.

O'REILLY: Right.

HEWITT: Bill Clinton went to Oxford to get out of going to Vietnam. I don't know what the big deal is.

Jim:

I missed that interview. Actually, I've purposely missed O'Reilly ever since he's been on this Liberal kick and started bashing conservatives. On 60 Minutes he said he might vote for Kerry and called him a patriot. He also mentioned his positions on many issues. I don't mind the guy being a Lib. I do mind the fact that he used conservative viewers to build his reputation and then turned around and started criticizing them. I know O'Reilly personally and he's always be good to me and very pleasant towards my wife. But I've just lost interest in his show.

Thank you for confirming what we already suspected, people who don't automatically believe the negative about G.W. Bush put out by the overwhelmingly liberal media are "nobody."

Notice how he also masterfully redirects the train of thought to Bill Clinton, first by saying *not* going to vietnam by influential means is not a crime and then immediately points out Bill Clinton *left the country* to go to college to get out of serving.

Except that Bush was serving, just in a different branch, as a fighter pilot. Not only was Bush really good at it and his training lasted years and the unit he joined has *just* been deployed, but Bush was not eligible to go to vietnam due to his training

And then Bush left the service "early" to go politicking, the same as Kerry (who served far less time in a uniformed service than Bush).

But I am a nobody and thus my opinion doesn't exist (along with 50% of the rest of the country, according to the CBS guy.

Except that Bush did not leave the service early. He reduced his hours the last two years, but still completed the minimum. The question should be, did kerry do his weekends and two weeks of summer training that were required in 71-72 when he was in the standby reserves? If he did, he should have been honorably discharged in 78. However he did not recieve his honorable discharge until 2001. This leads me to believe there are questions with his service, I think this is why they are trying to discredit Bush. Kerry needs to be forced to release his 180 form. President Bush should offer kerry as an option to clear up all questions of their records, that he would give an execitve order that both of their military records be promptly released. If Bush did this during the debates it would be a slam dunk. kerry would crap his pants.

I saw the interview. Between what he directly said and the facial expressions Hewitt completly trashed Rather.

Neither Hewitt nor O'Reilly used the explosive (sic) language popular with the committed on left or right. This refrain made the indictment much more effective where it counts: with those few on the margin still watching CBS Evening News.

I didn't see the interview. Here is what irks me. GW Bush had a draft number of 327. He would not have been called up for duty. All 5 1/2 years of his service was duty to his country and had nothing to do with getting out of going to Vietnam. Geez. Why didn't Mr. Rather know that?
The main assumption is that he would have been forced to go to Vietnam if Daddy didn't interfer but wait, no he would not have been called because of his high number for the draft and the year of his eligibility. Kerry graduated 2 years before George and in a different situation.

Chris W.:

Hewitt was very matter-of-fact about the Rather issue. He called it a non-story (said Vietnam is a losing prospect altogether) and said Rather (or anyone else) doesn't belong in the "big" chair if they don't check their own facts.

Dan Rather, CBS News Anchor:
1) given documents he thought were true
2) failed to thoroughly investigate the facts
3) reported documents to the American people as true to make his case
4) when challenged, launched an investigation, quickly.....apologized
5) substance of the bogus documents appears to have been true...anyway
6) cost to the world in lives and money: zero
7) Bush camp conclusion: should be fired as CBS News Anchor

George W. Bush, President of the United States:
1) given documents he thought were true
2) failed to thoroughly investigate the facts
3) reported documents to the American people as true to make his case
4) when challenged, stonewalled an investigation,.....never apologized
5) substance of the bogus documents appears to have been...bogus
6) cost to the world in lives and money: incalculable
7) Bush camp conclusion: four more years!

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting sick of O'Reilly's efforts to walk the middle ground.
