It's nice to know that we here in the United States hold a monopoly on liberal apologist idiots with suicidal tendencies. The Boston Globe found a kindred spirit today, in the form of Uri Avnery, a former member of Israel's Knesset and founder of a "peace bloc." Mr. Avnery looks back on the life and times of Yassir Arafat, the man who gave us the Munich Olympics massacre, the invention of the suicide bomber, and the man responsible for the deaths of thousands of Israelis, Palestinians, Americans, Lebanese and others, the man who reshaped the Palestinians people into a death-worshiping, Jew-hating, festering sore on humanity before clutching the Nobel Peace Prize in what must have been the bloodiest hands to ever befoul the name of that award. And now that he draws nearer to his long-overdue demise, Mr. Avnery is predicting that Israel will regret his passing.
I remember once reading that all Jewish holidays could be boiled down into nine simple words: "They tried to kill us. They failed. Let's eat." When Arafat finally stops polluting the air and begins polluting the soil of wherever he gets planted (please, God, not in Jerusalem, unless he's cremated and his ashes are flushed down some toilet), it will indeed be a day for much feasting -- even for those of us who aren't Jewish.
Mr. Avnery, I expect, will be in deep mourning, and I suspect will engage in the Jewish tradition of fasting when that day comes. And I hope he continues his fast until Arafat returns.

Jay Tea, wait until the Dems nominate Hillary Rotten Clinton for president in 2008 and the blogoshere -- which will be even more powerful by then -- and talk radio tell the American people how Hillary supported the PLO in her counterculture, radical, blame America and the Jews days. The fact that the Boston Globe would publish such an article speaks volumes about the anti-semitism that exists on the Left today. Not only here, but in their kindred spirits in Europe.

"They tried to kill us. They failed. Let's eat."
I think that quote originated from Meryl Yourish, at yourish.com.

e m: You're probably right. How about "the modern suicide bomber," which uses nails and screws for shrapnel and rat poison as an anticoagulant, to increase the carnage and death toll?
NF, you might be right. Sounds like something Meryl would say, and hers was the first blog I discovered. But the original I saw was "They tried to kill us. We won. Let's eat." After telling it to my Jewish now-ex-girlfriend, though, we reworked it to be a bit more historically accurate.

Fabulous post J.
There is no doubt that Arafat was a terrorist at one stage of his life and enriched himself at the expense of his people. However he is a moderate compared to other Palestinean groups. His demise will not help the peace process and may in fact make the matter worse.
However I am sick and tired of reading this kind of ill informed bilge. Supporting the Palestineans is not tantamount to supporting terrorism. Moreover criticising Israel does not make one anti semetic. Get off your self righteous high horse before you fall off.
You bandy the term "liberal" about as though it is the new catchword on the street. It would appear that anyone who is not pro-war is a liberal. What a simplistic view you have.
I can understand people's anger after 9/11. But bombing mountains in Afghanistan and deposing Saddam Hussein has not made the world a safer place and done nothing to alleviate the pain and loss of the friends and relatives of the victims of 9/11. If anything it has probably only made it more dangerous. The American people have been duped into a war, which they can not win. Their allies have been bribed and it will only be a matter of time before the coalition disbands as the real motives for the war become apparent.
By all means, will on the demise of Arafat if you must. He was a man looking for a homeland for his people. His methods in the beginning might have been crude, but show me any conflict in any part of the world where both sides have not stooped to the lowest level of humanity, America included.

Yeah, that characterization of Jewish holidays is about right.
But let me take it a step further.
Reform Jews: They tried to kill us. They failed. Let's eat.
Conservative Jews: They tried to kill us. They failed. Let's go to temple for a couple of hours, sneak out early, and eat.
Traditionalist Jews: They tried to kill us. They failed. But you have to remember the social issues of the time, the parables that are in the Torah and Haftarah, and so on. And you have to spend all day at temple, and not sneak out early; you also have to go the night before. You can't turn on the lights or cook all day because it's a holiday, and just like on the Sabbath, you can't do anything that involves creation -- no writing, no cooking, no nothing. Believe me, your grandchildren are going to get RESTLESS.
Orthodox Jews: They tried to kill us. They failed. Let's be separate from the women for all that stuff the Traditional Jews do, except for the whole "eating" part.
Laconic Jews, like myself: What historical context? I'm hungry. Let's eat.
