Drudge as usual
HBO MOVIE SHOWS RADIO 'AIR AMERICA' CHAOS**Exclusive**
HBO is set to air a behind the scenes look at the launching of liberal radio network AIR AMERICA.
The DRUDGE REPORT has obtained a director's cut of LEFT OF THE DIAL, a grossly entertaining docu-drama of life on the other side of the AIR AMERICA microphone.
The doubts. The lies. The bounced checks. The heartbreak.
The viewer is taken upclose to witness the ugly business of media ambition.
The main character, Evan Cohen, founding chairman and main investor, is depicted as a complete fraud.
The documentary shows Cohen arriving in the middle of night at AIR AMERICA offices to sign over the company and disappear again, but not before lying about how many ads have been sold and how much money is the bank [zero].
Dead Air.
It shows how AIR AMERICA executives lied and lied again about not bouncing checks to their Chicago and Los Angeles affiliate owners. [The network was quickly thrown off the stations.]
The film captures AIR AMERICA staff first learning about the Chicago and LA nightmare by reading a DRUDGE REPORT exclusive on their computers.
It shows midday host Al Franken at a staff meeting being told there is no money left, hilariously, just moments after ranting about George Bush's ethics.
The HBO crew is told to shut down their cameras -- but they don't -- and the 'We're Broke!' meeting is filmed raw.
LEFT OF THE DIAL shows an angry meeting of the writing staff being told how money was deducted from their checks to pay for health care -- but the money was never paid to the HMO and they were never covered!
Host Janeane Garofalo looks suicidal in nearly ever scene which she appears.
"What am I going to do, just ramble on and on," panics stand-up-comic-morning-drive-host Marc Maron, as he deals with the reality of becoming a talkshow host.
Note to self, some time before now and March 31 when it airs, call Direct TV and order HBO, you don't want to miss this one.

In their defense (and this is hard for me) comedians or not, they have a right to say their piece, right or wrong. If I have this correct, it's the executives who are guilty of something or everything and should be held accountable. It's only "irony" that Al and Janeane harrangue the other side of the aisle of the complicity of republicans and big business in taking advantage of "the little guy". They've hurt themselves and their cause but don't appear to have broken any laws.

The only "news" in this Drudge "exclusive" is that someone slipped him the tape. HBO is promoting the show on their site. Stories mentioning it have been bubbling around for weeks.
That said, it's hilarious that Air Idiot is drawing less listeners in NYC than the station broadcasting their lineup drew when it was a niche channel featuring Caribbean music and cricket scores, and they are now wholly beholden to Clear Channel to keep their programming on the air.

So where is Err America getting money from? Is Sugar Daddy Soros just pumping in millions to run it at a loss? I mean, you have to pay those shrieking moonbats Franken, Rhodes and Garafolo, etc, plus all that kool-aid probably costs a lot, too.

Prove it, pal. I follow talk radio pretty closely, reading the trade magazines and the radio message boards, and your claim is the first I ever heard of such a thing. In NYC, after Air Idiot hit the airwaves and the Presidential campaign kicked into high gear, the lead right wing talk station, WABC, had their highest numbers in something like a decade, and became the highest ranked AM station in the city.
So, where'd you get that little factoid, Franken? His absolute cluelessness about radio ratings was displayed early in Air Idiot's infancy when he went on the air bragging his Arbitron ratings in the 25-54 demographic were beating Limbaugh's. Problem was, those were only trend numbers based on the initial month they were on the air, with all the accompanying media hoopla that preceded their debut. A couple months later, when the real numbers were released, Rush had smacked Franken like a red-headed stepchild. By the end of 2004, Limbaugh's number in that demo were climbing while Franken's were sliding down.

Distortions and lies from Matt Drudge? Coincidence? No, the bitch just ain't right...
Frank C. got it right! And, being from Chicago and familiar with the episode here, it was a matter of the radio station's previous owner trying to extort more money out of AA. It was settled in court and in AA's favor, although we still have no station here. More to do with a competitive market and not an appropriate wattage station available.
Reading TC's ongoing obsession with AA, is like reading Republicans picking out the one helpful piece of data in a current Bush approval poll.
Air America was only on for 2 1/2 months in Chicago, but the first Arbitron book gave them a 3.3 share. TC leaves out the fact that AA is beating Rush in many markets, and the only reason the Conservative Clear Channel pick them up, should be obvious.
It's O'Reilly paying affiliates to keep his radio show on, and Hannity dissing the Freeper Brd just to scare up some more listeners.

HBO to Air Docu on Air America: "Left of the Dial"
March 23, 2005
By Tony Sanders
Air America gets a one-year birthday present from HBO on March 31 when the cable network airs the documentary “Left of the Dial” by director Patrick Farrelly and producer Kate O'Callaghan. The film tracks most of the past year’s travails as the liberal network started, faltered and was yanked off the air in some major markets. A Drudge Report review of the documentary played up “The doubts. The lies. The bounced checks. The heartbreak.”
Air America Radio president Jon Sinton told Billboard Radio Monitor “This documentary is a sanctioned event. Matt Drudge, notwithstanding, we’ve signed off on it. The filmmakers had access to us and it truly is a story of birth, death and resurrection. It’s a very redemptive story. We’re not displeased with it at all.”
An HBO release says the documentary “reveals the nervous expectations of investors who staked their careers on the network,” including Evan Cohen, Air America’s former chairman, David Goodfriend, who becomes the network’s general counsel, and investor Doug Kreeger. Along with profiles of many of the networks personalities, descriptions of nervous debuts, shouting matches and other frenzied activity, HBO says the documentary closes late in 2004 when, “in December 2004, a new round of investors brings Air America a measure of financial stability.” HBO pegs the affiliate roster at 40 by year’s end.
As of March 23, Air America has added another 11 stations and now boasts 51 affiliates.
The film will debut on Thursday, March 31 at 8pm (ET), with other playdates on April 5, 11 and 14.

Clive,
As I asked "billy" earlier, back up your claims about ratings with facts. You tell me the edition of Arbitron's book where the numbers your citing exist; don't be another FrankenFan who cherry-picks attenuated demo numbers to show a success. And show me which markets AI is beating Limbaugh.
If you actually read the Air Idiot posts I've put up on my site, my argument with them was never about the politics, it was about the business. They went into radio thinking you could just throw money around and succeeed. Even now, with huge amounts of investor capital having been churned through their operation, and a level of free publicity delivered by all manner of fawning print and televised coverage, they are operating in the red, and a good percentage of their on-air adverts are PSAs that bring in no revenue.
They are, and unless they start shedding the losers that litter their lineup and replace them with radio pros, nothing more than a niche broadcaster. Ed Shultz, all by himself, is heard on 20 more stations than Air Idiot. As a counterweight to Limbaugh, Hannity et al, they aren't even in the arena, nevermind playing the same game.
