That's my father-in-law Jim with our youngest (and his youngest grandchild) just a few weeks ago, Easter Sunday. This evening he's hours from death in Delaware hospital. My wife is there with her mom and sisters and brother waiting for the end to come. I'm 3 hours away in Virginia with his last 3 grandchildren; thankful to God that they were given some time to spend with their Grandfather before he left this earth.
Update: Jim passed away several hours after this was posted.
PS - Just a quick note of thanks to those who've left kind thoughts and prayers; it's sincerely appreciated. -K

I don't often pray. And when I do, I often pray for very bad things to happen to very bad people.
Tonight, I pray your grandfather peace.

When I die, give what is left of me to children. If you need to cry, cry for your brothers walking beside you. Put your arms around anyone and give them what you need to give to me. I want to leave you with something, something better than words or sounds. Look for me in the people I have known and loved. And if you cannot live without me, then let me live on in your eyes, your mind and your acts of kindness. Love does not die, people do. So when all that is left of me is love ... give me away.

I just lifted my grandfather’s casket into the ground this morning. And I did the same for my other grandfather just 28 days ago. So this is fresh in my mind. They both had a major impact on my life.
It looks like I won’t be able to participate directly in the circle, as you describe it. It would take some external intervention to help my wife and I reproduce, and she’s completely against that. So my contribution will be made through my influence on my nieces and nephews.
You have my condolences, and my congratulations.

Sorry to hear that. It is never an easy thing to go through. My parents are just now reaching that age where the thought of them having an illness or worse is more prevalent in my mind.
That is why the three WunderKids spend so much time with them and why I gave up a good career and moved back to my hometown. I wanted my kids to know my family and my wife’s family.
Again, sorry and you have my condolences.

Life is quite frail and Memories fade, but Love endures.
I lost all four of my grandparents and one uncle in a 13 month span when I was 6-7 years old. Youngsters have, I think, a better understanding of what death means than many adults, and I'm very thankful that the grandchildren in your family got that time to spend with him. My heart goes out to you and your family, Kevin, and I will fervently pray for peace and comfort for all of you.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there
I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle Autumn rain
When you waken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there
I did not die
