What, hypocrisy from Ted Kennedy? I'm shocked, shocked!

Washington, D.C., has some of the highest taxes in the nation. As a sop to its beleaguered residents, though, it has a special tax break for some of its residents. It allows them a "homestead" deduction on their homes if they're their primary residence -- a loophole that 22 U.S. senators jumped through, including Ted Kennedy.

The only catch is that it requires that the homeowner declare that home to be their primary legal residence -- which would immediately disqualify them from their Senate seat, as they would no longer be residents of the state they represent.

Unfortunately, Ted never filed the paperwork, so instead of finding himself out of the Senate, he just has to pay back the taxes (about $7,700). There's no word if there will be a penalty involved, but I doubt it -- after all, he's TEDDY KENNEDY, for heaven's sake. We can't hold him to the same standard as you or I.

Teddy, of course, is blaming his bookkeepers for the "error." I can believe it -- I can't see him wanting to be bothered with such trivial details such as the little people have to be. But it is just so damned typical of Teddy and his ilk.

Odds are Ted really doesn't do his taxes, he's got plenty of people doing things like that so he can concentrate on his scotch. So he's probably not really responsible for the "error".

That said, as a senior congressman, he should have made very very clear instructions to his staff to be 100% legal, even if it ended up with him paying more taxes than necessary, just to avoid the appearance of impropriety. I mean, really, $7,700 is nothing to the Kennedy fortune. Why risk a scandal over what is most likely nothing more than the monthly alcohol bill?

Still, it indicative of a trend in that he'll also pretend to be royalty, above all the petty concerns. But I really don't picture him sitting down at the dining room table with paystubs to do his taxes. Just don't see it.

Steve L.:

This is the same loophole that Tom Daschle used, but he is smarter than Teddy. Daschle put his DC home in his wife's name so that he could keep his "official" residence in SD, but still get the tax break.

Chad:

The best part about "Tom" was the film where they had him claiming to be a D.C. resident. I got endless enjoyment watching that ad, and hearing the nails going into his political coffin. Don't get me wrong, he did some good things for S.D., but over time, he distanced himself from the people of S.D., and followed the "party line" rather than the wishes of the majority of his constituency. As far as I know, he's only been back to S.D. once since he lost. That was a month or a little better ago.

I've long been of the opinion that we should pass a constitutional amendment requiring all people in high-ranking federal positions (basically House, Senate, President, VP) to prepare their own income taxes themselves.

I guarantee you we'd get our tax code straightened out.

Old Coot, I am shocked, disgusted, and appalled that you would say such a thing.

It was an OLDSMOBILE, not a Buick, that Teddy used to put the blonde in the pond.

I can't believe you made such a disgusting, libelous, careless error. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Taxes for thee, but not for me ...

What everyone is missing is that Teddy's probably been doing this for YEARS (he just got caught THIS year). He probably owes six figures in back taxes, not just the $7700.

Is anyone checking?

I, for one, simply will never tire of any article, or comment, that makes fun of Senator Hiccup. For him to stand in front of the American public and have the unmitigated gall to speak about values is nothing short of amazing. Clearly, he does not have time to do his own taxes, that would certainly cut into his time of drinking until his liver is the size of Texas.

I just suppose that it was Kennedy and 21 other Democrats. I'm all for accountability, but you could at least razz the other Senators, too. I'm pretty sure Rick Santorum is one of the others.

Well pussboy, reading the article, only Teddy got mentioned by name. I'm pretty sure you could look up the names of the other 21, but I am not sure how Jay (who's blogging isn't at all New England centric, no) is obligated to do so.

Oh, and Santorum lists his residence as Penn Hills, PA. Democracy for Pittsburgh, an offshoot of Democrat Howard Dean's presidential campaign, is the group calling for Santorum to not recieve PA's homestead rebate. They claim that since he spends more time in DC than in PA, he can no longer claim a home in PA as his primary residence. Which if found to be the case, would also make him (and most senators) unable to run for election in the future.
