What's could be worse than a finding out a sex offender is living in your neighborhood? How about finding out he's getting a government funded prescription for Viagra?
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Scores of convicted rapists and other high-risk sex offenders in New York have been getting Viagra paid by Medicaid for the last five years, the state's comptroller said Sunday.Kudos the New York state comptroller Alan Hevesi for bringing this situation to light.Audits by Comptroller Alan Hevesi's office showed that between January 2000 and March 2005, 198 sex offenders in New York received Medicaid-reimbursed Viagra after their convictions. Those included crimes against children as young as 2 years old, he said.
According to Hevesi, the problem is an unintended consequence of a 1998 directive from federal officials telling states that Medicaid prescription programs must include Viagra. His office discovered that the state was helping sex offenders pay for Viagra by checking Medicaid pharmacy expenditures against the state's sex offender registry.

Well, you certainly filed this correctly under "Speech-challenged Picines" (Dumb Basses).

Curmudgeonly rant: ON
If Medicaid provided any medical aid or procedure whatsoever to sex offenders (that is, rapists, etc.), it ought to be in the form of radical orchiectomies, or just outright mutilation, followed by ramming a sharp stake up their rectum til it popped out the top of their skulls.
(You may notice I'm a wee tad on the intolerant side of this issue. Mark it down to being a human being instead of a savage, sub-human so-called liberal.)
Rant: OFF
As to current practices: any Medicaid personnel who provided Viagra to sex offenders ought to be REQUIRED to personally provide sexual servicing along with it. 24/7/365.

What sort of doctor prescribes Viagra for a sex offender? More than one place to spread the blame for idiocy here . . .

You know I read the headline and thought basically that it was outrageous and probably the doing of liberals, but then after a moment of thought I decided to withhold judgment. Does Viagra, et al, make sex offenders MORE likely or LESS likely to molest children? I am politically conservative, and naturally would be VERY suspicious about this, would tend to assume the worst, etc. But I don't know. Does it make them MORE likely or LESS likely to have sex with children? Maybe they want the Viagra for their non-feloneous sex with other adults.
A better question is "why is the government buying Viagra for anyone?", but I'll put that aside for now. So, I don't know if this is good or bad. Color me highly sceptical, but I'll withhold judgment until I have more information.

Couple thoughts on this.
First, unless the rapist mentions to the doctor that he is a perv the doctor isn't going to know.
Second, while yes this story is bad, we are missing the actual outrage. Medicaid shouldn't be paying for this bs for anyone. It is like elective surgery, if you can afford it then buy it with your own dime not mine.

Weeeellllllllll, let's see.....according to Wikipedia, it was patented in 1996 and approved by the FDA on 03/27/98 and available for sale in the US the same year.
Managed Care Magazine, July 1998:
"State Medicaid programs are weighing their options now that the Clinton administration has said they must cover medically approved uses of Viagra, Pfizer's anti-impotence medication."

Wow. Bill Clinton. Now there's a surprise.
