Sticker Extortion

In order for the enviro-wackos to stop vandalizing my car I have to buy a sticker from them? How, exactly, is this different from protection money paid to the mafia?

Its not so much that I'm against this idea per se, I just don't like the implication that people are going to be influenced into buying these stickers by the idea that the presence of one on their windshield will protect their car from rampaging hippies.

Maybe these people should stay away from my vehicle not because I contributed to their pet cause but for the same reason I don't go around peeing on Hondas and slashing the tires of VW vans: Because its illegal.

When a leftist's car is vandalized, it's oppression and probably a hate crime.

When a conservative's car is vandalized, it's self-expression and the guy deserved it anyway for having the hegemonic American flag sticker and/or NRA sticker.

At least that's what I was told in reeducation camp.

You've completely misunderstood what the stickers are for. Sure, you can pout them on your car, but that's not the point.

The Wharton Grad students aren't the ones trashing SUVs. Or maybe you think there's some grand conspiracy between the nut at Caltech, E.L.F., and Wharton?

It's just a way for those with SUVs who are also green to offset the pollution they create through free-market trade of pollution credits, thereby investing in the environment. What's more American than that?

Mars, why do hippie stoners driving a dayglow VW bus putting out more smoke than a coal-fired power plant get a pass, but SUVs are assumed to "pollute more"? More compared to what?

Thank you for your rational and well thought out response that, above all, doesn't resort to sterotyping at all.

Most of those hippie-mobiles are about dead anyway. However, thousands upon thousands of SUVs that are being produced and bought today.

What's more important is that nobody is forcing anybody to buy the stickers. It's simply a option for those who drive ANY car and are evnironmentally conscious, even hippies.

I'd report them to the police for arrest and trial. That's the clear cut definition of a "Protection Racket", and it's extremely illegal. Especially since it involves an illegal act as a consequence of not paying up.

We own two "hippie-mobiles"... (Below threshold)

We own two "hippie-mobiles" (well, kinda. One is from 1963, and the other is a Eurovan from 1985 or so)... and yeah, most hippies wouldn't be able to maintain these vehicles. You have to be able to put an axle back on the vehicle by yourself, etc.

And they've got the gas mileage of most SUVs. Of course, the older the vehicle, the worse the gas mileage generally -- you've got to stay on top of it to keep it tuned up. But we regularly drive the 1985 van. It runs pretty well, and we're giving it its first engine change soon.

Yeah, those Wharton Business School students are tough. Someone get RICO in here! Who, ed, would you put on trial? What illegal act is the consequence the students will inflict? Is it hard to type with a straightjacket on?

"Yeah, those Wharton Business School students are tough. Someone get RICO in here! Who, ed, would you put on trial? What illegal act is the consequence the students will inflict? Is it hard to type with a straightjacket on?"

Because smartass a reasonable prosecutor could show the existence of a conspiracy. That would send both the eco-vandals and the students to prison. All it would take would be for one student and one eco-vandal to know each other to link the two together into a conspiracy. Even if there isn't even one in either group that knows each other, but there are other individuals that are known to both, then that could be enough to tie them together.

RICO is a bastard, nobody wants to be on the receiving end of it. And toss in extortion, conspiracy, criminal enterprise, vandalism and a host of other charges.

Frankly these Wharton students are idiots.
