An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Since Jay and I have been here, we've both had our share of inane commenters. Jay has banned quite a few of them but I do things different. If a commenter is being an idiot, I delete that post(s) and let them come back when they cool off. In this odd place called the blogosphere I get beat on for deleting a post but banning someone forever never draws any ire... Go figure.

But we were both wrong. Cathy figured it out.

Speaking of money, anonymous commenter Soupy's constant crowing about his probably non-existent Pulitzer is begining to get on my nerves. (I did like someone's response a while ago, though: "There's a Pulitzer Prize for stalking?") ...

Now as regular readers are aware, I almost never ban obnoxious commenters. But why not, at least occasionally, make them pay for it? Or, even better, see what they're worth?

So here's a little experiment/pledge break: I'm banning Soupy... but only until he, or someone on his behalf, pays a $50 fine through that PayPal button on the right for his preening idiocy. Then he can come back. The money doesn't have to come in all at once; you can contribute as little as a dollar at a time to the Soupy Fund Drive. Just put something like "Soupy" or "Cathy's Clown" in the PayPal subject line, so I'll know what it's for and can keep track.

Now THAT is a good idea.

Or perhaps, the more we pay, the larger our font-size, or special luxurious typefaces, or special emoticons available only to those with the jack to appreciate the best. ;-)

Seriously we are dealing with two different problems. The guy Jay banned was potentially breaking copyright law, Cathy's troll was being annoyingly stupud, thoughtless, and nasty (though she thinks he is sane). I find her solution rather amusing, but sadly in your case banishment is the right way to deal with ,ummmm, plagiarism.

2) fatman, JmaR and Dan were posting from the exact same two IPs (one, presumably, work and the other home), usually in "cycles" -- a batch of JmaRs, then a batch of Dans. And there were no other names attached to those IPs. Conclusive enough for me.

3) I love the idea of fines, but this ain't my blog. If Kevin wants to try it out, great for him. I just live in fear of the day he starts charging ME for access.

One last point: at my last count, my postings have generated over 14,000 comments (excluding spams, contests, and my own comments -- I toss those in a folder marked "Narcissus." It's a little truth in labeling.) I don't have a count on the number of individual commenters, but to the best of my recollection only four have risen to the point of my feeling I had to ban them.

I just feel the need to keep things as "transparent" as feasible and say what I did and why. I've tried to cultivate a reputation for honesty, and I view such openness as a key element of that.

In their eyes, I'm just a walking mass of selfishness and apathy towards others. I admit that they have part of the story right, but who can live without caring for themselves? I keep getting the urge to just hand my mom or dad a nice sharp knife so they can stab me to their heart's delight. I guess it would be appropriate to be killed by the one who hates me the most."

Dude, I have too many IPv4 addresses for you to ban them all, and I can get more pretty easily.

You can't really ban me from commenting here with the technology available to you unless you want to ban a pretty large collection of otherwise innocent people. That's why I told you it would be easier and simpler for you to just make a declaration that negative criticism of the editorial content at Wizbang! is unwelcome and posting it in the comments will get you banned. My entire purpose for posting in the comments here was to prove the point that your public declarations about not policing the comments forum by censoring dissenters is nothing more than a fetid load of dingo's kidneys.

I think I've proven that point now. You should just stand up and admit that you don't have the stones to carry negative criticism in your comments forum. Fawning sycophants who lovingly praise your every word are welcome and encouraged to post, but dissent will not be tolerated.

It won't cost you a dime (even paid to yourself) to get me to leave the comments at Whifflebang! and never post here again. All you have to do is denounce your policy of tolerating dissent.

I'll even make it easier for you. Just say you banned me for being an annoyance. That will do.

He in his "I'm so much smarter than you" way set up the rules of the contest. I find it hysterical that he got hoisted on his own petard.

Truth is I was not gunning for him, he volunteered. Frankly he's not even as annoying as some of the other moonbats that hang out here. But heck, he made the rules, I just took advantage of them.

Kevin and I have spoken about registration systems... So far we have not had the need. While I might think s9 is the biggest horse's ass since.... umm this is hard... the biggest horse's ass since Ted Kennedy, I don't expect he'll go nuts and spam the board like we had one guy do.

I could even be convinced to lift the "ban" if he made a donation to a charity or something. dunno- I'm taking offers. ;-)

Oh that is such bullshit. I said I would leave if you raised more than $500.00 in an auction. In what alternate universe do you live in where the laws of capital operate such that you can simultaneously make and accept a bid in an auction, pay yourself the money, and call that money a receipt of capital?

If you had paid the money into a Whifflebang! corporate account, and Kevin's accountants weren't utterly corrupt (not a safe assumption— he is aligned with the party of Enron), then you might be able to claim that Whifflebang! had raised the money.

But you didn't pay the money into such an account. You said, "OK I bid 500 dollars... which I will pay to myself." And now you have the stupidity to claim that you made $500 appear out of thin air? You think these are the rules I made for you?

Dude, you really need to stop licking the toad. How high are you? Not even Leon Fscking Trotsky would seriously try to pull bullshit like this.

OK s9 You are right... I only made the bid and accepted it... I had not PAID myself.

So today I went to the ATM and I got out 500 bucks. I took a penny out the ashtray and put it in my pocket.
