Comfort For The Enemy

An unbelievable revelation from an interview between MSNBC's Nora O'Donnell and former CIA analyst and bin Ladin expert Michael Scheuer:

O'DONNELL: Let me ask you what you know about what we've read recently about a secret military operation known as Able Danger. There are people involved in that that say that the United States knew about Mohammed Atta a year before the 9/11 attacks. Is that true? And was there a massive failure by our government?

SCHEUER: I don't know firsthand information about Able Danger, ma'am, but from what I've read in the media, that the lawyers prevented them from passing the information to the FBI, that certainly rings true. The U.S. intelligence community is palsied by lawyers.

When we were going to capture Osama bin Laden, for example, the lawyers were more concerned with bin Laden's safety and his comfort than they were with the officers charged with capturing him. We had to build an ergonomically designed chair to put him in, special comfort in terms of how he was shackled into the chair. They even worried about what kind of tape to gag him with so it wouldn't irritate his beard. The lawyers are the bane of the intelligence community.

I wonder if it ever occurred to these idiots that we should actually catch bin Laden before we start worrying about how comfortable he would be in captivity.

Honestly, I'm wondering why we'd be all that worried about his comfort at all...

Why after 9/11 haven't we caught Bin Laden?

Why after 9/11 did G.W. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove and team put us into a diversionary war with a country that had absolutley nothing to do with 9/11? Can someone say PNAC?

What ever happened to the gutless wonders tough talking chickenhawk words of "Bin Laden Dead or Alive"? What ever happened to the gutless wonders tough talking chickenhawk words of "Bring It On"?

Why are there so many tough talking republicans between the ages of 18 and 40 safely state-side while all of our armed forces are under quota for enlistment? Can someone say "false patriots and cowards?

Maybe because he has state sponsored protection in places that we can't violate international law to go. Borders are borders with restrictions, brainless wonder. Maybe it's pretty damn hard for Americans with a big language barrier and limited local help to access tribal regions in the middle of nowhere.

If you don't like the answers you are getting, you might as well give it up. Those questions were asked and answered and President Bush was reelected.

Democrats would do better if they quit bashing President Bush and focused on figuring out what their own message is. President Bush isn't running for reelection and he doesn't pay any attention to liberals who personally attack him. But democrats will be in an election in just over a year, and "bashing Bush" isn't going to go over any better than "anyone but Bush."

Contary to right-wing talking points there is NO "librul" media. What exists is a corporate pr machine for this president. It's the way of fascists, grease someone's hand so in turn your hand will eventually be greased. ( no one buys the "librul" media talking point anymore, find something new).

Hey penny, just imagine how much faster under your timetable things would play out if every fellow republican you know between the ages of 18 and 40 were to enlist today. Then again we both know that isn't going to happen, don't we?

Oh, please. Give it up.

For starters, Republicans most likely far outnumber Democrats serving in the military now. So what's your point?

That you wouldn't be fit for service is a given and a blessing. Far easier to be a gutless blow-hard wonder playing verbal warrior badly at a keyboard with most likely pizza boxes littering the floor of your bedroom. Or maybe you live exclusively on canned goods?

I know you would like to think most of the millitary is registered republican ( and that may or may not be the case) but understand political affiliation should have NOTHING to do with serving our country. It's an issue because draft dodging cowards like G W Bush and Rove have made it a "wedge" issue.

The fall out of how the general public has been treated by this administration and modern republican party wont be forgotten any time soon.

Putting one neighbor against another, putting one christian against another, putting one family against another for the sake of political gain will reap it's repercussions.

I'm all for the humane treatment of detainees. What I mean by that, is that I'm against the inhumane treatment of individuals, UBL included [should we ever capture him]. That doesn't mean I'm with Dick Durban on the issue of Gitmo; uncomfortable interrogations are necessary. I am strongly opposed to any type of torture [in the true sense of the word].

There should be a clear line, in regards to treatment of detained terrorists, that should not be crossed. There's always the hypothetical ticking bomb scenario, but it's hypothetical. You'd have to a) know for fact there was a bomb [or an impending attack], and b) know for fact the individual could provide actionable information which could stop the attack, if only he/she were "persuaded" enough. If the individual "might" know something, which "might" help thwart an attack that "might" happen, then why engage in torture [again, in the true sense of the term]?

If UBL is ever captured [and elects not to, or is prevented from "martyring" himself] I hope he is treated fairly, and humanely. Right up until the point his Islamist ass sails through the trap door on the gallows.

People of the left and right-- when presented with an opportunity to join together and attack the real enemy, take it!!! Do not look gift horse in the mouth!!

Before I read the comments, I was simply going to ask: Was Sheuer really serious?!? Were his comments not hyperbole?!? Did DoD lawyers REALLY impel officers to design an ergonomically correct chair?!?

I find the factual assertion really quite ridiculous and utterly worthy of evenhanded disbelief -- and yet the post devolved almost immediately when JDC (as clueless a moonbat as I've ever witnessed here or elsewhere) suggested that General Franks actually (apparently willingly) allowed bin Laden to escape Tora Bora -- a suggestion perhaps even MORE absurd than the lawyers insisting on ergonomically correct capture techniques for a mass murderer.

I feel as though I am reading a Kafka story!

SCHEUER: No, ma‘am. The war in Iraq has broken the back of our counterterrorism effort. I‘m not an expert on the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, but the invasion of Iraq has made sure this war will last decades ahead and it has transferred bin Laden and al Qaeda from being man and an organization into being a philosophy and a movement. We‘ve really made sure that the war against us is going to be a long and very bloody one. Iraq was an absolutely disastrous decision.

"What exists is a corporate pr machine for this president."

Err, yes, and the media is run by the Jooos. One has to wonder why then, they do an incredibly poor PR Job since all we hear about is how bad Bush is and how evil the Jews are to Palestinians.

"no one buys the "librul" media talking point anymore"

Nobody needs to buy the point when it is so blatant on a daily basis. Has the Air America scandal hit the news yet?

You know it's weird, the right think the media is liberal because they don't show the good economics figures out recently, the good works going on in Iraq, they like to spin any story to be anti-Bush (i.e. the iPod article not containing 'Fortunate Son').

The left think the media is right wing because they don't reveal the truth behind Bush's plans to take over the world with the aid of Joooos and kill every one who ever had, or thought about having an abortion.

As for Bin Laden, bet you he's dead. The guy had serious kidney (or was it liver) problems before all this started. He needs dialysis frequently, not hard to get when you're on the run in the middle of the mountains. No doubt the left will still want to see a corpse even if it does mean digging up hundreds of square miles of desert.

Of course, what about all those Serbian War Criminals that the lefties charged around the world to stop? I guess they are all still on the run?

As per the chickenhawk bit, I'll join up when you either join the police and fire services or stop expecting them to come save you. Perhaps you can shut up about health policy unless you are in the healthcare business, and please, your thoughts economic are worthless without a degree in financial management.

"Why after 9/11 did G.W. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove and team put us into a diversionary war with a country that had absolutley nothing to do with 9/11? "

Just like Afghanistan had nothing to do with the USS Cole bombing. Thought you guys were supposed to see the 'bigger picture'? Wasn't 9/11 because of US troops in Saudi Arabia? Why were they there? Because of the threat to Saddam? Please, the arguments for the Iraq war have been made many times. You either have missed them, disagree with them (which is fine), or just blatantly disregard them.

The Death of Common Sense, indeed. Law tempered with a little wisdom and common sense would help the country (and not least the profession). But it is a profession of splitting hairs, and the closer you get to the hairs, the farther you get from the big picture.
