End of the line for Dr. Feelgood

Everyone's heard of oxycontin, the potent painkiller that is the new "hot" drug for abuse that has become known as "hillbilly heroin." While it is seriously abused, it remains a godsend and a lifesaver to a lot of people undergoing cancer treatment and other severely painful conditions. When prescribed by a conscientious doctor, the drug is often considered a godsend.

That wasn't apparently the case with Dr. Michael R. Brown of Sandwich, MA. Dr. Brown -- recently arrested for buying back painkillers he had prescribed for a patient. Police say Brown would prescribe the drugs to his patients, have them obtain them, and then purchase them from them.

Dr. Brown came to authorities' attention when it turned out that he might be overprescribing oxycontin. They thought it odd that a single doctor had written the prescriptions for almost a full third of all oxycontin sold legally in Massachusetts.

When he was arrested, Dr. Brown had over $60,000 in cash in his car, along with numerous drugs, prescription pads, and empty liquor containers. Dr. Brown is currently facing 13 counts of possession with intent to distribute, and has had his license to practice medicine revoked.

I suspect that Dr. Brown will be resuming his practice, on a very limited and closely monitored basis, on behalf of the Massachusetts State Penal System.

That sounds about right. I'd give him 5 years there, and maybe he can work as a nursing assistant after he gets out of jail.

Dr. Brown was my Doctor for almost 20 years, and began treating me after my 2nd back surgery in 1986. He didn't start treating me for chronic pain until after my third back operation in 1996,which left me with severe chronic pain which I have had to live with for almost 10 years now. When I moved to Virginia 4 years ago it took until 3 months ago to find a Doctor who was as compassionate as Dr. Brown was in treating my pain. I'm not so sure about these charges, but the so called Video Evidence doesn't look good for him. But as far as writing all those rx's One pain sufferer will always refer another to a good pain doctor...I personally referred at least 2-3 dozen people to this doctor because he understood pain and what it can do to a person and he wouldn't let a person suffer as long as they didn't abuse the meds. My journey started in 1994 with Tylonol#3 and progressed over time during the next 10 years(and 3 more back surgeries) to where I now require 80mg oxycontin just to keep me from being in agony. Oxycontin truly is a Godsend to those who really need it I only Hope Dr. BrownCan Sraighten out his life and one day get his license to practice back, for he really is a doctor who cars about people in pain.

Does it matter?:

I was also a patient of Dr. browns and I truly found him to be professional and very compassionate to my condition. He did not prescribe to me oxycontin. However, I was prescribed a narcotic. What angers me with this whole Dr. Brown case is the fact the DEA felt the need to investigate me. Why? Because I was seeing Dr. Brown while living in Rutland Ma. Gee, didn't know that was such a crime. I tried explaining how the entire workers compensation system worked in which if one has never been through that horrible situation, then one will never know. Being a workers compensation victim, one can not just change a doctor without a valid reason. Dr. Brown was my treating physician from the time of my injury as I happened to live about six miles away from his office. Over time, I had relocated a few times. I was in the care of a neurosurgeon that Dr. brown had referred me to, then after all my surgeries, I was referred back to Dr. Brown. Dr. Brown took me way off of the pain medication I was originally taking by my neurosurgeon. Now that Dr. Brown is no longer treating patients, I called the board of medicine to see what my options were seeing as how dr. Browns license was pulled. Again, people are so clueless to the workers compensation system because the investigator from the board of medicine suggested I contact my workers compensation insurance company to see if they could find me a doctor. Yeah, lets just call the people I sued for over 100,000.00 to find me a good doctor I thought. This investigator from the board of Medicine took down my name. Shorly after, I have the DEA at my door questioning me about Dr. Brown. Before I get into all that questioning, my new physician I got immediatly after dr. Browns license was pulled told me that the medication dr. brown was prescribing to me, was too little from all I did suffer with. Get this, my new doctor wanted to prescibe oxycontin. So... Does that mean that my doctor prior to dr. brown and my doctor after dr. brown are all wrong in prescribing pain medication to me??? when the DEA came to my house, I was not home the first friday they showed up. Ironically, I was at my doctors that day. then next friday they showed up, I happened to have been in the shower to where they told my husband they would wait until I was done. I wrapped my hair in a towel and went outside to see what they wanted. They first started out with saying "we are the DEA and you are not in any trouble, we are questioning you because you are a patient of Dr. Browns. Not knowing weather or not to talk to these people, I figured I best let them in so they don't waste my time appearing in some kind of court situation. As the questions continued, I was getting rather angered with questions such as "has doctor brown contacted you? have you contacted him? Is doctor brown responsible for your addiction? They even had the nerve to ask as to why a license plate was missing from a vehicle in our driveway. Like that is any of thier business and what does that have to do with Dr. Brown?? I told them it was my son's car and he was transferring plates because he bought a new car. Hope that satisfied them. They were harping on the fact that I lived 200 miles round trip from dr. browns to my residence. They weren't happy enough with the fact I have a work comp claim so my husband mentioned I had family on the cape, in which I do but rarely ever visit them. As soon as they heard I had family on the cape, one of the investigators says "oh, that explains it". hell, if it made him happy to hear that, then so be it because it was not the reason I was seeing Dr. Brown. They were not happy with the real reason so the hell with them. I not only had three back surgeries, I have titanium "rods and screws" as well in my lower back. I also have a paralyzed left foot because the work comp adjustor from hell would not approve my surgery until they were made to do so by a judge that was quite irate to have seen my condition. After my last surgery, I was placed in a hospital bed in my home and had to lay flat on my back for an entire three- four months with only getting up to shower or use the toilet that was next to my bed. Being in bed that long, I developed atrophy. Never in my life have i been through something so horrible and the only way to sum up all I had been through, was to think as to how lucky I feel to be alive. A bone graph and fusion was included in that surgery. Bone graph- is when a surgeon cuts off part of your hip to grind down the bone and mix with putty to put in your back. NOW.....for all I had been through with the f&%^"n workers compensation system I now have to be questioned as to the kind of pain medication I am receiving???? I'm sorry but before an investigation is going to be done, one would think they would have better reason to question a patient other then the distance a person is traveling to see their doctor. It is not a crime to pick a doctor you feel comfortable with. Which reminds me. When telling the DEA that I felt comfortable with Dr. Brown, their response was "Is it because he prescribed you pain medication"? At that point I wished I could have punched the guy right in the head. Dr. Brown knew my entire medical history. He referred me to an excellent neurosurgeon and lets just say that most doctors including radiology that have seen xrays of my spine, don't even know what is in my back. You should see some of the reports that can't even come up with titanium when naming the apparatus images on an xray. After trying to recover from my first surgery, I was attending therapy when a therapist pushed three times on my lower back and re-ruptured the disc. Again, a professional I was seeing and one would think someone like that would know what they are doing re-ruptures the same disc a month post-op and this is why I became untrusting to specific doctors and why I was not too keen on changing my course of treatment OR DOCTOR!! Spaulding rehab were not so bright as well with all they were doing to my condition. I go to rehab and this woman that is in charge of my care starts having me twist and bend in possitions I have never been doing before I was ever injured. I finally asked her if she knew what titanium was. her response "no". My visits at spaulding re-hab ended immediately. When an individual questions a person about pain medication and why it is I was seeing a doctor so far away with the history and problems I have been through since the day I got hurt at Bickfords in falmouth (which is now closed due to my settlement), Now maybe people can understand how irate I am about the entire Michael Brown situation. Because Michael Brown lost his license, I am no longer getting reimbursed from the insurance company from hell even though they settled with liability and WHY? Oh I am sure they are banking on the fact that Dr. Brown should have never been prescribing to begin with. I have fought this insurance company once before with the last incident resulting in them paying me over 2,000 for not complying with a court order. One last warning for them before I call my Attorney to sue them for the third time. I do not know Dr. Brown on a personal level nor do I care to but one thing I can say about the news media including the board of medicine that comes directly from thier own site is the fact that there is no way that Dr. Brown was prescribing to "kids" and if in fact he was, then I would have to say that there have to be pharmacies that should be in trouble as well for filling such a prescription. Anyone under the age of 18 can not fill a narcotic medication without a parent signing for such prescriptions. So what is the board of medicine and the news media really trying to say? that dr. brown prescribed to drug dealers who then gave to our children? yeah, thats right... I forgot that doctors come right out and ask if a person is a drug dealer when they decide to treat with pain medication. And don't forget, if a person is asked by a doctor if they are a drug dealer that the drug dealer is going to come right out and say "you caught me, I'm a drug dealer" get real people!! If doctor brown was a shady character, I just dont' feel that the patients of doctor browns that had real injuries and illness's such as my own, should have been left out in the cold with no warning at all. Being I have been on pain medication for a very long time, If i were to all of a sudden stop my medication, of course I would become extremely ill. That does not make me a druggy. That makes my body dependant on medication which is two totally different issues. It is something that people against pain medication have absolutely no clue unless they had a dibilitating injury. There are other medications that could make a person deathly sick if a person all of a sudden stopped it but its not considered a "taboo" if its something other then a "narcotic". Did the board of medicine take people like me into account when taking Dr. browns license away? hell no!! Well in my opinion they should have. A doctor has a responsibility to a patient when they retire and have a huge set of laws to go by before they can retire so why is it any different if the board of medicine all of a sudden stops a doctor from practicing??? I think there should have been a temporary replacement doctor at the time of Dr. browns sudden departure. It's so funny when doctors have you sign an agreement when it comes to pain medication but the patient has no rights at all. Most doctors do have you sign, I happened to have had one in my medical file to where dr. brown did have every document, every piece of information that was part of my medical history. If a doctor is going to long term prescribe to a patient a narcotic medication, then they too should have to sign an agreement that states "if for any reason i feel you no longer need this medication, then I will properly wean you down". I also feel that if for any reason the board of medication suddenly takes a doctors license to practice, then they too should consider what a patient is going to go through without the medication that WAS prescribed and make sure that patient is properly treated. Instead, they tell you to go to your local hospital if you need assistance. Gee, how good does it make a person look to walk into your local hospital and say "I was a patient of a doctor that was over prescribing, can I have my narcotic medication for my injuries?" I feel sorry for those that were left in that position. the only worry I had at the time was getting to see a doctor in time before my meds did run out just for the reason that I would have become deathly sick if I didn't find one in time. I was far from worried I would find a doctor but the biggest problem I did have was finding out that doctors in my area were not accepting new patients. I now see a doctor that is forty minutes away. So, before people start judgeing dr. brown, as the saying goes "innocent until proven guilty" should not have gone out the window and referred to as "guilty until proven innocent" Technically I could give a damn but the way my luck has been since the day I was injured, the entire Michael brown incident was just another added headache to my entire history!! I left my name out of this forum for very good reasons and if you can't understand that for all I have said, lack of common sence is what puts our country in trouble.

IN FOLLOWING THE MICHAEL BR... (Below threshold)
Does it matter?:

IN FOLLOWING THE MICHAEL BROWN CASE, MICHAEL BROWNS CHARGES FROM THE SANDWICH POLICE DEPARTMENT THE DAY MICHAEL BROWN WAS ARRESTED FOR ASSULT, THAT CHANGED TO ATTEMPTED ASSULT WERE DROPPED. DOES THAT SURPRISE ANYONE? IT DOESN'T SURPRISE ME. IN WATCHING THE TAPE THAT WAS AIRED ON FOX 25 NEWS WAS JUST MORE THEN RIDICULOUS. MICHAEL BROWN NEVER TOUCHED THE INVESTIGATOR. MICHAEL BROWN FULLY COOPERATED IN ALL THE QUESTIONING FROM FOX 25 NEWS AND IN MY OPIONION, IT WAS SO VERY OBVIOUS THAT FOX UNDERCOVER JUST COULDN'T COME UP WITH DIFFERENT QUESTIONING. MICHAEL BROWN MADE HIS FIRST MISTAKE BY COOPERATING AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS AS NOTHING GOOD EVER COMES OUT BY BEING QUESTIONED BY THE NEWS MEDIA. EVER SINCE THE BROWN CASE WAS AIRED, MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE REFUSING TO SPEAK TO THE MEDIA BECAUSE THE MEDIA IS JUST INTERESTED IN MAKING A PERSON LOOK BAD. THE DAY MICHAEL BROWN WAS ARRESTED, IT WAS A DAY TO WHERE HE WAS TRYING TO DO HIS JOB AS A DOCTOR, WHILE THERE WAS PICKETING GOING ON FROM THE "LEARN TO COPE" GROUP. MIKE BEAUDET'S QUESTIONING WAS NOT ANY DIFFERENT FROM THE PREVIOUS QUESTIONING. AFTER AWHILE IT TENDS TO ANGER A PERSON TO WHERE ONE CAN ONLY TAKE SO MUCH. THE SANDWICH POLICE DEPARTMENT COULD HAVE BROUGHT MICHAEL BROWN TO THE SIDE. INSTEAD, MICHAEL BROWN WAS IMMEDIATELY HAND CUFFED. THE IDIOT COP SAT ON TOP OF MICHAEL BROWN IN A VERY ROUGH AND INAPPROPRIATE MANOR THAT WAS SO UNCALLED FOR. MICHAEL BROWN WAS NOT RESISTING BEING ARRESTED BUT BEING THIS WAS AIRED, THE SANDWICH POLICE DEPARTMENT IN MY OPINION WAS MORE OR LESS SHOWING OFF BECAUSE THEY WERE "COPS". I HOPE MICHAEL BROWNS ATTORNEY SUES THE SANDWICH POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR WHAT I SEE TO BE DISCRIMINATION, HARRASSMENT AND INAPPROPREIATE BEHAVIOR FROM THE SANDWICH POLICE DEPARTMENT. ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN COULD SEE THE ARREST WAS NOT CALLED FOR. THE "LEARN TO COPE" GROUP WAS CHEERING WHEN MICHAEL BROWN WAS ARRESTED. AS I STATED IN MY FORUM ABOVE, WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY? I WOULD BET THAT IF THE "LEARN TO COPE" GROUP WERE NOT PICKETING THAT DAY, THE NEWS MEDIA WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN DOWN AT THE PLACE OF BUSINESS THAT MICHAEL BROWN PRACTICES AT. IT WAS NOTHING MORE THEN A CIRCUS DOWN THERE AND THAT IS WHAT BRINGS THE NEWS CREW TO A PLACE THAT HAS "ACTION" TAKING PLACE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE "LEARN TO COPE" GROUP IS ABOUT PARENTS THAT HAVE LOST THEIR CHILDREN TO DRUGS AND I DO FEEL SORRY AND VERY BAD FOR THEIR LOSSES. HOWEVER, UNTIL MICHAEL BROWN IS PROVEN "GUILTY" TO THE CHARGES BROUGHT AGAINST HIM, WHO ARE THEY TO JUDGE A MAN UNTIL OUR PEERS IN THE COURT SYSTEM HAVE PROVEN HIM GUILTY? IF MICHAEL BROWN IS PROVEN INNOCENT ON ALL CHARGES, ANYONE FROM THE "LEARN TO COPE" GROUP IS STILL GOING TO BE UPSET. THEY WANT A CONVICTION BECAUSE MICHAEL BROWN PRESCRIBES THE SAME NARCOTIC THAT HAS TAKEN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN. IF MICHAEL BROWN IS PROVEN GUILTY FOR PRESCRIBING A NARCOTIC TO A PATIENT THAT WAS NOT IN NEED OF THAT TYPE OF DRUG BY OUR PEERS OF THE LEGAL SYSTEM, THEN I MYSELF WILL BE THE FIRST PERSON TO KNOW HE WAS "WRONG" AND SHOULD BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW. I JUST CAN'T JUDGE A PERSON UNTIL THAT PERSON HAS GONE THROUGH THE LEGAL SYSTEM. EVERY PERSON IS ENTITLED TO A FAIR TRIAL TO WHERE I DO BELIEVE OUR LEGAL SYSTEM IS ONE THAT IS ACCURATE AND FAIR. IF MICHAEL BROWN IS PROVEN INNOCENT, IT WILL BE BLAMED ON "MONEY" AND THAT MICHAEL BROWN BOUGHT HIS WAY OUT OF BEING CONVICTED AND WHY? BECAUSE MICHAEL BROWN HAS ALREADY BEEN LABLED AND JUDGED AS THE BAD GUY. OR SHOULD I SAY "DR. FEEL GOOD" AS THAT IS WHAT THE NEWS MEDIA AND OUR SOCIETY HAS LABLED HIM AS BEFORE A FAIR TRIAL. I MYSELF DO KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO LOSE A LOVED ONE TO SOMEONE ELSES NEGLIGENCE BUT BLAMING HER DEATH ON OTHER PEOPLE IS NOT GOING TO BRING HER BACK OR STOP IT FROM HAPPENING TO OTHERS. HER DEATH IS HAPPENING TO MANY OTHERS AND I CAN ONLY HOPE IT GETS RESOLVED WITH TIME. I'M NOT A PERSON THAT HASN'T BEEN DOWN THE ROAD OF LOSING SOMEONE EXTREMELY CLOSE TO ME. I DO UNDERSTAND THE PAIN AND FUSTRATION BUT IF FOR ANY REASON I BLAMED THE WRONG PEOPLE FOR TAKING HER LIFE, HOW BAD WOULD THAT MAKE ME FEEL? PRETTY BAD. SO ON THAT NOTE, PEOPLE NEED TO SIT BACK AND LET THE LEGAL SYSTEM THAT WAS CREATED TO GIVE PEOPLE A FAIR TRIAL, SHOULD LET THE LEGAL SYSTEM DO THEIR JOB BEFORE WE JUDGE A PERSON BASED ON NEWS MEDIA COVERAGE AND A POLICE DEPARTMENT THAT HAVE BEEN DOING AN INVESTIGATION FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. DR. MICHAEL BROWN DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY HIS WAY OUT OF BEING CONVICTED AS HE IS NOT A WELL KNOWN CELEBRITY WITH MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS OF DOLLARS. IF HE IS PROVEN TO BE GUILTY, IT WILL BE BECAUSE HE WAS GUILTY. IF HE IS PROVEN INNOCENT, ITS BECAUSE HE WAS INNOCENT AND UNTIL THE LEGAL SYSTEM PASSES DOWN ANY SENTENCING, THE REST OF US NEED TO MOVE ON AS IT IS NOW IN THE HANDS OF THE PEOPLE. IF DOCTOR MICHAEL BROWN WAS NEVER MY DOCTOR, A MAN THAT HAD TREATED ME AND MY CONDITION EXTREMELY PROFESSIONALY, I WOULDN'T FIND THE NEED TO FOLLOW THIS CASE AS CLOSE AS I HAVE. IF HE IS GUILTY, I WILL NOT DOUBT OUR LEGAL SYSTEM AND FEEL HE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED LIKE ANYONE ELSE THAT COMMITS A CRIME.

The beginning of this forum... (Below threshold)
Does it matter:

The beginning of this forum states "End of the line for Dr. Feel good" NEWS FLASH!! Its starting to look like the accusations against Dr. Brown are diminishing and diminishing quite fast. In an updated news article, it states that Dr.Brown was one of the top 10 prescribers of the drug oxycontin and he had over 3-5,000.00 patients and yet 8 of them so far have turned out to be drug addicts. So that means that the rest of the innocent patients have to suffer and why? because it seems to me that "people" just don't like this man. A woman from Learn2Cope did not want to reveal her last name to protect her son that was the age of 23 in the recent post on Dr. Brown but that didn't seem to matter so much when she was picketing down on Dr. Browns place of practice to where she was the leader of this group and her entire name was printed at the bottom of my television screen. This post (news article) stated that there were rumors going on at the time of the picketing from the learn2cope group. Why is it now stated to be "rumors"? Because no one is coming up with anything worth talking about anymore? Dr. Browns attorney pointed out as to why if in fact Dr. Brown has been investigated for so long (10-20years) as to why there is not much evidence and for that reason, the charges should not even need addressing. Oh wait, don't forget how the news media hyped this doctor up by stating he was prescribing to children and how an arrest by the sandwich police was dropped for what they called in the beginning as "assult" to later "attempted assault". Dr. Brown still claims his innocents on all charges. Time will tell as I am following this story quite closely!! It is not a Dr.'s job to weed out the fakers, it is the patients responsibility to tell the truth.
