Quote of the Day - New Orleans Politics Edition

"If Sen. Mary Landrieu were as good at busing black people to safety as she was at busing them to the polls to vote, none of them would have died."
Those of you who follow Louisiana politics know that no truer words have ever been spoken.

Too many of her core constituency down in NOLA have scattered to the four winds. A good chunk of those folks will never return.

I'd be curious to know how many of the poor who did not/could not evacuate actually owned their homes or were renters. This is relevant because if they owned, they'll get assistance to rebuild. If the rented, their landlords will get the assistance and they (the poor folks) likely will not be able to afford the rent in the spiffy new digs.

MrSpkr, they may be scattered right now but there's no reason to think they won't gravitate back to NO or at least in the area. Especially if it's the new and improved version. Even if only 75% of them return that'll probably be enough to put her back in office.

MrSpkr raises an interesting issue.

For those N.O. residents relocated out of state, will they still be allowed (out of sympathy) to vote in LA if they intend to return? Will they be able to vote in the state where they are relocated if they are there long enough to establish residency? I can see the DNC rubbing it's dirty little "re-districting" hands over this one.

I don't see why they wouldn't be able to vote where they're relocated, unless they're still living in the Astrodome during election time, and thus not "technically" at an established residence. I moved out of state last August and voted in all local and national races two and a half months later.

I heard an evacuee say something close to this when I was down at the Astrodome a couple days ago.

She said "They care about us enough to make sure we have a ride to go vote for them but not enough to make sure we have a ride out of town when a Hurricane is coming."

I saw another woman with a sign that said "You owe us and explanation, Nagin!"

Before TCF posted a reply to such an ignorant, petty statement you'll probably live to regret Paul, I thought I'd check out the rest of Wizbang's coverage of Katrina.

No surprise, I found it equally dispassionate, willfully ignorant, and full on damage control!

While the administration pleads their ineffectual response had nothing to do with race, your quote found a better use for it.

Hey, thatcoloredfella, what have YOU done to prevent the need for "damage control?"

Just curious.

On the other hand, attempting to associate "damage control" and Wizbang in the same context seems like so much more of that muckity muck brown water that's currently affecting (and has affected) New Orleans. It must be a tough thing to read non indulgent liberal crud -- somewhat overwhelming, in fact, such that people here (most of us) will give you time enough to get your bearings. But only time enough, then you're on your own.

Either you haven't really "checked out" Wizbang's coverage of Katrina all that well or you have a serious reading comprehension problem.

Paul had barely hooked up his computer after HE evacuated from New Orleans (actually Metarie[sp?]) before he began calling for "Brownie's" head on a silver platter. And I've seen very few comments disagreeing with that. At least one of them made by me, suggesting we should find out what happened before starting the (metaphorical) executions.

Dispassionate? Really? Or just dispassionate in that some views do not concur with yours? Willfully ignorant? In what regard? I see a pretty wide array of opinions with all sorts of insight. Damage control? And full on at that? So your analyses are the "truth" and questioning or challenging your perceptions is to defend the indefensible?

While the administration pleads their ineffectual response had nothing to do with race, your quote found a better use for it.

If you read racism into the administration's response, then it is your own projection coming to fore. Tired, overplayed, reflexive, race-baiting at its worst. Yawn. There is no, to use your quote, "elephant in the room". There may be a donkey in our midst, however.

To... whoever: Schilling for George Dubya and the GOP must be such sweet sorrow. 1) if you think that the result of this fiasco will be a massive defection of Louisiana Blacks to the GOP, you must be high on crack cocaine (or whatever Rush is jonesing for this week... 2) yes, we're angry, folks, and if you're not, please ask for some freaking humanity for Christmas this year, and 3) How is our quite well documented case for George W. Bush as about the biggest abject failure ever to occupy the White House, not to mention his critical failures in THIS case, any more a case of jumping the gun than your crucifixion of Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin (not to mention the Senator, who I take it was the real culprit who should have bussed those people out...) because they're Democrats??? (for every action there's an equal and opposite Freeper campaign to impeach the nearest Democrat...) I suppose Haley Barbour, with 213 dead in his state (and personal accounts I've been taking for days about the unspoken devastation in Mississippi, papered over by Haley's happy-talk) was a standout? Give me a break!

I normally look to Wizbang for mostly intelligent commentary from the right (with a few instances of Limbaugh-like loonacy, just so it doesn't get ... like lil' ole me... boring...) But get a timeline, would you? Once Blanco wrote to the president requesting a federal emergency declaration on August 26th, and the Dauphin had his people write back promising to get right on top of the situation and put the full effort of the federal government at the ready, the feds had a duty to respond. The city's buses were beached by the flooding. The state was clearly overwhelmed. I have never once argued that Blanco is a hero here, but your inability to ever, not freaking EVER... find fault with George Bush is almost cult-like. This idiot could slap your mother and you'd blame it on her!!! What does he have to do to lose your respect??? For the love of God, stop kissing the president's ass and look at what the hell is going on!

whoever here. In view of your response, I don't believe that you are looking very closely during your normal visits. I, one of those "neo-con", McChimpy Bu$hitleriburton sycophants have excoriated this President on several issues. Others have too, regularly. I don't excoriate him on the Left wing hatefest that is "Bush is a stunningly brilliant, incompetant mastermind turnip who hates Blacks and embellishes the Gulf Coast region with gobs of tax dollars to show how much he dislikes the poor while rigging elections and stealing oil". But that's just me. Your assertion, however, is a fallacious, intentionally or unintenionally misinformed, and invalid charge.

He spent his administration displaying his naked buttocks to totalitarians of every stripe. Soviets, Mullahs, Sandinistas, there wasn't a West-hating butcher that Jimmeh didn't bend over for. And oh, did they take the offer...

BTW, there may be 213 dead in MS, but there hasn't been any looting, lawlessness, or people hunched in a stadium for days without food, water or a place to defecate. Now why would this be?
