Baby boom

A while ago, after the Beslan school massacre, I did some thinking and tried to predict what the next terrorist atrocity would be. I came up with hospitals. Then, after the Israelis foiled a plot to blow up a hospital (by a disfigured woman who was being offered free medical treatment at that hospital), I said "no more." I wasn't going to try to figure out their next atrocity -- I couldn't bring myself to plumb the depths of depravity and inhumanity a second time.

Had I, though, I might have looked at the Palestinians' recent attempts to use teenagers as suicide bombers, and their appalling tendency to dress babies up as tiny little suicide bombers, with (hopefully) fake bomb belts and everything, and come up with this possibility.

Golda Meir said back in 1969 that "(p)eace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us." 36 years later, we see that we're even further from that mark than we were then.

Hmm I think the next step is using unicef boxes laced with antrax, or peace doves filled with exploding viles of acid that also makes you get anthrax.

Indy Voter:

I'm not sure this breaks any new ground in the annals of terrorism. Hiding contraband under the baby is a really old trick, and since there's no indication that the woman tried to pull the pin off the grenade it doesn't appear she was trying to use the baby as a part of an IED or that she was willing to blow herself (and her baby) up just to kill a few soldiers.

That she might have pulled the pin and tossed it after the soldiers as they left is certainly plausible, but, given the amount of other explosives in the building, that doesn't appear to be a definitive conclusion. If the soldiers had failed to find the 10 kg of explosives which had been hidden there why would she jeopardize that by throwing a grenade after the retreating soldiers? That would be foolish from a tactical sense.

I suspect that she was holding the grenade for potential use in case she was going to be arrested (whether this was due to orders or her own initiative I have no idea) but chose not to use it when the soldiers became suspicious. I'm guessing that for this woman the love of her child outweighed her hatred of Israel.
